Yes: a Turbopack filesystem cache can speed up later work only if the next CI run restores the cache before building and saves it afterward. A fresh worker with no restored cache starts cold. In Next.js, the documented paths differ by context: Turbopack’s filesystem-cache configuration describes data in .next, while the CI guide tells teams to persist .next/cache. Check the paths used by your installed Next.js version and confirm your workflow actually restores and saves them.

What persistent caching does—and what it does not

A persistent cache lets a later build reuse eligible work from an earlier run. It is not enough for Turbopack to support filesystem caching: the cache must survive the CI worker, be restored before the next build, and be saved after the current build. If your CI job runs on a new ephemeral worker without restoring prior cache data, that run has no warm cache to reuse.

Next.js documentation says that, when enabled, Turbopack saves and restores data to the .next folder between builds. The separate CI build-caching guide recommends retaining .next/cache between builds. Those descriptions refer to different scopes; do not assume a rule for .next/cache necessarily captures every Turbopack cache location in every Next.js version. Inspect the paths created by your installed version and the paths your CI provider restores and saves.

Check your Next.js version and cache setting

In Next.js 16, Turbopack is the default bundler for both next dev and next build. Use --webpack to opt out. Bundler choice and filesystem-cache behavior are separate considerations: using Turbopack does not by itself guarantee that your production build has filesystem caching enabled.

The current filesystem-cache documentation says development caching is stable and production-build caching is experimental. Its version history says development filesystem caching is enabled by default from Next.js 16.1.0, while build caching remains opt-in through experimental.turbopackFileSystemCacheForBuild. Confirm the precise behavior and support for your installed version before changing a production workflow.

The documented configuration flags are:

import type { NextConfig } from 'next'

const nextConfig: NextConfig = {
  experimental: {
    turbopackFileSystemCacheForDev: true,
    turbopackFileSystemCacheForBuild: true,
  },
}

export default nextConfig

For current v16 documentation, the development flag is on by default; the build flag is an explicit opt-in for an experimental production-build feature. Do not enable it in production without weighing that status and verifying compatibility with your version.

Make sure CI restores and saves the right directory

Use your CI provider’s current cache restore and save syntax. Include the relevant cache directory in both operations, and arrange for restoration before the build starts and saving after it finishes. Provider behavior—including key matching, retention, and sharing across branches—varies, so follow that provider’s documentation rather than assuming a universal policy.

  1. Identify the cache path. Check the documentation for your Next.js version and inspect the output produced by a build. Resolve whether your workflow needs .next, .next/cache, or another version-specific path.
  2. Restore before building. Ensure the workflow fetches the prior cache onto the worker before running next build. A restore that happens afterward cannot help that build.
  3. Save after building. Confirm the workflow saves the relevant directory after the build has populated or updated it. A restore without a corresponding save does not preserve new cache data for a later run.
  4. Verify the result. Check CI logs or provider diagnostics to confirm a cache hit and that the expected paths were included. A workflow can be configured to cache a directory that Turbopack does not use for the installed version.

The Next.js CI guide says Vercel caching is automatic. That is specific to the Vercel context described by the guide; other CI providers require their own appropriate restore/save configuration.

Measure cold and warm builds fairly

There is no universal CI speedup figure established for Turbopack’s persistent cache. The result depends on your project and workflow, and cache restore and save time count toward the total CI duration. The Next.js engineering article also warns that incremental caching adds CPU and memory overhead and can make performance worse when applied poorly.

  1. Run a cold baseline. Use the same commit, dependency state, runner class, and build command as the warm test, but remove .next before building. The Turbopack API reference recommends deleting .next for a fair cold-build comparison.
  2. Run a warm comparison. With filesystem caching enabled and the CI restore/save steps in place, repeat the build under the same conditions so it can reuse the prior cache.
  3. Compare end-to-end CI time. Include cache restoration, the build, and cache saving—not just the time reported by the build command. Keep the cache only if the overall workflow benefits for your workload.

When to consider a different caching approach

A local CI cache is not automatically better or worse than hosted or remote build caching. Compare approaches against your setup using these practical questions:

  • Does cache state persist across the workers that run your builds?
  • Which directories and build inputs does the cache include?
  • Do restore and save costs outweigh the work avoided?
  • How large is the cache, how long is it retained, and what sharing rules apply?
  • Does your CI or hosting setup support the approach you plan to use?

The Next.js CI guide describes automatic caching for Vercel and points readers to Turborepo in that context, but the cited sources do not establish a universal winner or comparable provider benchmarks.
