Neither tubeless nor tubed tires are best for every mountain biker. Tubeless is a strong option for rough trails and riders who want to run lower pressure without tube pinch flats, but it depends on compatible components and regular sealant checks. Tubes offer a simpler system for riders who prefer to avoid sealant and tubeless setup. Choose only after confirming your tire and rim are compatible and checking their pressure limits.
How tubeless and tubed MTB tires differ
A tubed tire holds air in an inner tube inside the tire. A tubeless setup forms an airtight seal between a compatible tire and rim instead, using an airtight rim bed (often made with suitable rim tape) and a valve that seals against the rim. Many tubeless-ready systems also need liquid sealant to seal small leaks and punctures. Park Tool explains the system’s components and compatibility considerations in its tubeless compatibility guide.
“Tubeless-ready” does not mean “install without sealant.” Continental says its tubeless-ready tires can be used with a tube or run tubeless with sealant; Schwalbe likewise says a tubeless-ready tire needs sealing liquid to function tubeless. Check the instructions for your particular tire and sealant before installation: Continental’s Tubeless Ready guidance and Schwalbe’s tire-type definitions.

Pros and tradeoffs of tubeless
Why riders choose it
- Lower-pressure potential: Continental identifies lower pressure and a smoother MTB ride as advantages of tubeless-ready setups. Schwalbe states, “Tubeless tires can be used with a lower inflation pressure without compromising performance.” That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee for every tire, rim, rider, or trail.
- No tube pinch flats: With no inner tube to pinch against the rim, that specific type of tube flat is eliminated. This can matter on rough trails where riders want to use lower pressure.
- Some small punctures may seal: Sealant can close certain minor punctures, potentially letting a rider continue without stopping for a tube change. It will not reliably close every puncture.
These advantages do not establish that tubeless is universally faster, lighter, or less prone to flats. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide an independent head-to-head MTB comparison or a population-level flat-reduction figure.

What tubeless asks of you
- You need compatible tires, rims, rim tape, and valves, plus a careful bead-seating and inflation process.
- Pressure and sealant condition need attention. Continental warns that tubeless systems may lose air faster than systems with an inner tube, and recommends checking pressure before every ride.
- Sealant can dry out, with how quickly it does so depending on conditions. Continental’s MTB guidance suggests replenishment every few weeks to months depending on riding behavior; its broader guidance says to follow the sealant package’s interval. Use the instructions for your specific sealant rather than treating that broad range as a universal schedule.
Riders who value simpler routine maintenance, or already have a suitable tube setup, may reasonably prefer tubes. That is a matter of fit and preference, not a measured universal advantage.
Check compatibility before choosing or converting
Do not assume that a tubeless-ready tire will work on any rim. Verify compatibility for the specific tire and rim, along with approved tire width and pressure limits. Continental advises following the lower limit when tire and rim instructions differ; use the most restrictive applicable instruction. Park Tool cautions that attempting to make incompatible parts work is not considered safe or reliable. See Continental’s compatibility and pressure guidance and Park Tool’s compatibility guidance.

- Inspect tire, rim, valve, and rim tape for damage before installation.
- Do not convert a combination that the manufacturers do not identify as compatible.
How to set up a tubeless system
The exact installation steps depend on the wheel and product. Follow the tire, rim, and sealant makers’ instructions; do not treat one wheel-specific guide as universal. Park Tool’s detailed conversion example is for fat bikes, so use it for general principles and tool ideas rather than assuming every MTB wheel follows the same procedure: Park Tool’s fat-bike tubeless installation guide.
- Confirm compatibility and limits. Check approved tire and rim combinations, tire width, and pressure range before removing a tube or buying conversion parts.
- Inspect the wheel and tire. Look for damage to the tire, rim, valve, and tape. Replace damaged parts rather than relying on sealant to compensate.
- Prepare the rim. Fit suitable airtight rim tape and a compatible tubeless valve as directed by the component makers.
- Mount and inflate the tire. Seat the bead according to the tire and rim instructions. Suitable inflation equipment may be needed; verify that the bead is evenly seated before riding.
- Add and distribute sealant. Use the sealant maker’s dosage and handling instructions. Continental lists 70 ml for an initial MTB sealant mounting in its current Tubeless Ready guidance, but that is not a universal dosage; the product instructions take precedence.
- Check pressure and leaks. Confirm the tire holds air and that the bead remains correctly seated before the first ride.
Tools and supplies may include tubeless valves, rim tape, sealant, tire levers, and suitable inflation equipment. A valve-core remover and sealant syringe can be useful, but they are optional and should be used only as appropriate for the valve and product.

Maintenance for tubeless and tubed tires
Tubeless routine
- Check pressure before every ride, as Continental recommends for tubeless systems, and stay within the tire and rim limits.
- Check sealant according to its maker’s instructions and replenish it when required. Drying depends on the product and conditions.
- Inspect the tire and wheel for damage, and watch for recurring air loss or a bead that is not properly seated.
For MTB sealant care, see Continental’s MTB tire guidance and the Tubeless Ready instructions.
Tube routine
Tubes still need pressure checks and tire inspections. Schwalbe’s general fitting guidance recommends checking tire pressure at least monthly with a gauge; use the range specified for your tire and adjust checks to your riding needs. See Schwalbe’s fitting guidance.

What to do when a tubeless tire punctures
Sealant may close a minor puncture, but it is not a dependable fix for larger cuts or all damage. Schwalbe says larger damage such as cuts or snakebites cannot be repaired with latex solution. Continental recommends replacing the tire if sealant does not reliably close the damage and does not recommend user repairs in its guidance. Follow your tire maker’s repair instructions rather than assuming one trail-side method works for every tire.

Which system should you choose?
Continental recommends considering riding discipline, bike type, dimensions, and personal preference. Apply those factors alongside compatibility, puncture expectations, and how much maintenance you are willing to do:
- Start with compatibility: If your tire and rim are not confirmed compatible for tubeless use, do not convert.
- Consider the trail: Rough terrain may make the lower-pressure potential and reduced risk of tube pinch flats more valuable.
- Consider likely damage: Sealant may handle some small punctures, but riders still need a plan for cuts and other failures.
- Be honest about upkeep: Choose tubeless if you are willing to check pressure and maintain sealant; a tube setup may suit you better if you prefer not to manage sealant.
- Plan for repairs: Consider what spares you can carry and whether you can handle a tire problem away from home.
There is no source-backed universal winner: the better choice is the compatible system whose benefits and maintenance demands fit your bike and riding.
