Latex, ammonia-free, and fiber-based are not three mutually exclusive types of tubeless tire sealant. Latex describes a sealing ingredient, ammonia-free describes what a formula omits, and fiber-based describes a material that can help plug a puncture. Products can combine these attributes, so compare the exact formula, intended tire use, and compatibility instructions rather than choosing by label alone.

What the labels mean

Label or attribute What it tells you What it does not tell you
Latex-based Latex can coagulate at a puncture and form a durable repair. Schwalbe describes this as a sealing mechanism. It does not tell you whether the formula contains ammonia, or how long it will remain usable in your tire. Schwalbe notes that latex fluids dry over time. Schwalbe’s tubeless FAQ discusses the mechanism and drying limitation.
Ammonia-free The formula is described as omitting ammonia. It does not mean latex-free or identify the complete sealing mechanism. WTB, for example, describes its sealant as ammonia-free synthetic latex. WTB’s TCS 2.0 page covers compatibility and system details.
Fiber- or particle-based Fibers or particles can mechanically plug an opening. Schwalbe describes this as distinct from latex coagulation. It does not identify every other ingredient or prove that different fiber formulas perform alike. Schwalbe’s FAQ explains the distinction.
Combined formula A product may include more than one of these attributes. The three labels are not exclusive categories. Pirelli describes P ZERO Sealant as a road product containing ammonia, latex, and micro-sealing particles. Pirelli’s product page identifies its ingredients and intended use.

How the sealing mechanisms differ

Latex coagulation

In a latex formula, latex can coagulate where air and sealant escape through a puncture, forming a repair. Schwalbe characterizes this repair as durable, while noting that latex liquids dry over time. That trade-off makes the specific maker’s top-up, inspection, and cleanup guidance important; the evidence does not establish one lifespan for all latex sealants.

Mechanical plugging with fibers or particles

Fibers or particles can lodge in an opening and help block it mechanically. Product descriptions show why “fiber-based” is not a full ingredient list: Finish Line describes a latex-free fiber formula, while Tyre Yogurt describes a latex- and ammonia-free formula using fibers and fillers. Those are different manufacturer descriptions, not proof that every product in this category shares the same chemistry or sealing performance. See Finish Line’s technical information and Tyre Yogurt’s product information.

More than one mechanism or ingredient

A formula can combine ingredients associated with different labels. Pirelli’s P ZERO Sealant, for example, is described as containing ammonia, latex, and micro-sealing particles for road tubeless/TLR use. Read the product’s own ingredient and intended-use information rather than inferring its formula from a single label.

Examples show why labels are not rankings

Product example What its maker describes How to use the example
WTB TCS Tubeless Tire Sealant WTB describes an ammonia-free synthetic-latex formula. Its October 15, 2021 release claims sealing punctures up to 1/4 inch (6 mm); that is a WTB manufacturer claim, not a standardized comparative test result. WTB’s release. Illustrates that ammonia-free can still be latex-based. Check WTB’s current directions and compatibility for your setup.
Finish Line Tubeless Tire Sealant Finish Line’s technical PDF describes a latex-free fiber formula. The document is older, so it should not be treated as a complete statement of current product specifications. Illustrates a manufacturer-described fiber formula; verify current product documentation before relying on specifications.
Tyre Yogurt The maker describes a latex- and ammonia-free formula using fibers and fillers. Illustrates that a fiber product may omit both latex and ammonia; this does not establish performance against other formulas.
Pirelli P ZERO Sealant Pirelli describes a road-focused formula containing ammonia, latex, and micro-sealing particles. Illustrates overlapping attributes and a stated road tubeless/TLR use case.
Schwalbe Doc Blue Professional Schwalbe’s technology guidance specifies Doc Blue for installation in certain Pro One tire models. Follow the directions for the exact tire model, rather than generalizing them to all tires.
Vittoria Universal Tubeless Sealant Vittoria provides a product sheet with manufacturer formula claims. Consult the product sheet and current instructions for the exact formula and use details; do not infer them from the word “Universal.”

Check compatibility before adding sealant

Compatibility is specific to the tire, rim or wheel, valve, insert, and sealant. A product that works with one tubeless setup is not automatically suitable for another. WTB says its sealant is for tubeless-ready tires, rims, and valves. Schwalbe advises using wheels approved by their manufacturer for tubeless operation. Start with the manuals for the exact components and sealant.

  • Confirm the tire and rim or wheel are intended for tubeless use.
  • Check the sealant maker’s compatibility and installation directions for your tire, valve, and any insert.
  • Check whether the valve core is removable if your chosen installation method requires adding sealant through the valve. WTB describes a removable-core valve as enabling top-up in its TCS system; this is not a universal requirement for every product.
  • Follow product-specific maintenance, replenishment, cleanup, and temperature instructions. Do not transfer a duration or temperature range from one formula to another.

For troubleshooting an inflation problem, Schwalbe has a specific FAQ section titled “What helps if the tire cannot be inflated?” at its tubeless FAQ. Its advice is manufacturer guidance, and the applicable steps depend on the setup.

Installation instructions can be model-specific

Schwalbe’s technology guidance for specified Pro One tires calls for Doc Blue and riding after installation so the sealant distributes inside the tire. This is guidance for those models, not a universal requirement for every tire or sealant. Check the tire manufacturer’s directions and the chosen sealant’s instructions together; if they differ, confirm which products are approved for that setup before installing.

WTB’s TCS system documentation also explains the removable valve core’s role in topping up sealant. Whether that method applies depends on the valve and product instructions. Consult WTB’s TCS 2.0 guidance and Schwalbe’s tubeless technology information for their respective systems and tire guidance.

How to compare sealants for your setup

  1. Start with your reason for choosing a formula. If you want to avoid ammonia, verify that exact product’s label and current maker documentation; do not assume it is latex-free. If avoiding latex is the priority, check for an explicit latex-free statement rather than relying on “fiber-based.”
  2. Match the intended use. Check whether the maker names your tire type and use case, such as road tubeless/TLR, and whether the product is suitable for the pressure and setup you run.
  3. Verify every component. Check the tire, rim or wheel, valve, and insert documentation alongside the sealant directions.
  4. Understand the stated mechanism and ingredients. Look for natural or synthetic latex, ammonia, fibers, particles, or other listed materials. A label may describe only one aspect of the formula.
  5. Compare maintenance directions. Use the product’s own instructions for top-ups, cleanup, temperature, and inspection; do not assume all formulas need the same care.
  6. Put puncture claims in context. Separate a manufacturer’s advertised maximum puncture size from results in a described independent test. Neither alone creates a universal ranking across formula types.

What performance evidence can—and cannot—show

There is no standardized, controlled comparison in the cited product information that ranks latex, ammonia-free, and fiber-based formulas as whole categories. The Cycling Weekly comparison published April 7, 2026 is an example of an independent test, but its findings apply to its own products and setup, not every sealant in a category. It also illustrates that test outcomes can differ from maker claims. See Cycling Weekly’s comparison for its test context.

WTB’s up-to-1/4-inch (6 mm) figure is specifically its October 15, 2021 manufacturer claim for TCS sealant. It is not an independently established limit for ammonia-free sealants, synthetic latex, or sealants generally. No shared test basis in these sources supports a cross-category winner, universal puncture success rate, or common service interval.
