Choose X if you need the broadest reach, fastest cross-network discovery and the largest mix of journalists, officials, organizations and eyewitnesses. Choose Truth Social if your priority is reaching a Trump-centered, conservative audience and participating in that community’s focused political conversation. For factual reliability, neither platform is an authority: verify consequential claims with the original document, a trusted news organization or an official government source.
Truth Social vs. X at a glance
The practical difference is scale and concentration. Pew Research Center’s 2025 surveys found that 21% of U.S. adults had used X, compared with 3% who had used Truth Social. Twelve percent regularly got news on X, while 2% regularly got news on Truth Social. Among people who used each service, however, news use was similarly common: 57% of X users and 55% of Truth Social users said they regularly got news there.

The percentages measure self-reported use in U.S. surveys, not a real-time count of accounts or active users. Truth Social’s parent company does not disclose user numbers, so precise active-user claims should be treated cautiously.

X has the larger addressable audience
For a writer, newsroom, researcher or public official trying to reach as many people as possible in the United States, X is the practical default. In Pew’s 2025 Social Media Fact Sheet survey, 21% of U.S. adults said they used X. The comparable figure for Truth Social was 3%. Pew’s Social Media and News Fact Sheet found that 12% of adults regularly got news on X, versus 2% on Truth Social.

That gap affects more than the number of followers displayed on a profile. A larger network gives a post more chances to be seen by secondary audiences: journalists who quote it, officials who respond, specialists who add context and eyewitnesses who contribute local information. It also makes it easier for a reader to move from one account or topic to an unrelated event without leaving the service.
Truth Social offers a smaller but more concentrated network
Truth Social’s lower overall adoption does not mean its users ignore news. Pew found that 55% of Truth Social users regularly get news there, only two percentage points below the 57% share among X users. The difference is how many people those percentages represent and which communities are connected to them.
Associated Press background reporting describes Truth Social’s content and audience as overwhelmingly conservative and closely tied to Donald Trump’s political ecosystem. That concentration can be an advantage when a post is specifically intended for Trump supporters or conservative activists: the relevant audience is more likely to be present and receptive. It is a limitation when the goal is to reach people outside that political network or to expose a claim to competing viewpoints.
Because TMTG does not publish a complete user count, do not treat unsupported figures for Truth Social’s active users as established facts. The survey percentages are the more defensible comparison.
Is Truth Social better than X for following news?
Use X for breadth and fast cross-network discovery
X connects a wider range of news sources in one place: reporters, local witnesses, government agencies, companies, campaign organizations, analysts and commentators. Reuters Institute’s 2025 Digital News Report says X news use was stable or increasing in many markets, with particularly large increases in the United States, Australia and Poland. The report also notes that more right-leaning people, notably young men, moved to X after Elon Musk’s 2022 takeover.
This breadth is useful during a developing story. A local account may post a photograph, an agency may publish a statement, a reporter may identify what is confirmed and a specialist may explain the technical detail. X’s larger network increases the chance that these pieces appear in the same conversation, although it does not guarantee that the first item you see is accurate.

Use Truth Social for a focused view of Trump-aligned politics
Truth Social is more useful when the story itself concerns Trump, the MAGA movement or conservative political organizations that are active on the service. Its concentrated community can make it easier to follow a particular political ecosystem without sorting through as many unrelated topics.
The trade-off is narrower source diversity. A feed dominated by aligned voices may reveal what a political group is saying and how supporters are reacting, but it can omit dissenting evidence, local reporting or institutional sources that are not part of that network. Treat it as a view into a community, not a complete account of the news.
What the percentages do—and do not—mean
The 57% and 55% figures describe the share of existing users who regularly get news on their respective platform. They do not show that Truth Social delivers as much total news as X. Combining those rates with the 21% versus 3% adoption figures explains why X remains the larger news destination overall while both services are heavily news-oriented for their own users.
How each platform decides what you see
X recommendations
X says its recommendation system combines the interests selected during onboarding; accounts and Topics you follow; likes, reposts and replies; media you watch; and what is popular in your network. The company says these signals operate across more than 500 million daily posts. In practice, a post can reach people who do not follow its author when engagement and network signals indicate that it may interest them.
X also states that not every permitted post is eligible for maximum distribution. Its recommendation policy says, “freedom of speech is a fundamental human right — but freedom to have that speech amplified by >x< is not.” Harmful or offensive material may remain available while being excluded from Home recommendations, top replies, For You recommendations or push notifications.

Truth Social discovery features
Trump Media & Technology Group’s quarterly filing for the period ended March 31, 2026, lists a For You feed, a Discover tab and carousel recommendations for other accounts. The filing also identifies direct messaging, Groups and international availability introduced in June 2023. Direct messaging was introduced in 2022, and Groups were introduced in May 2023.

These tools support a more community-oriented experience: a user can follow recommended accounts, browse a discovery area, participate in a Group or contact another account directly. The filing does not establish that Truth Social’s recommendation system scans a network as large as X’s or delivers comparable cross-topic reach, so do not assume that similar feature names imply similar distribution.
Why a recommendation is not confirmation
Both systems optimize for relevance, engagement or community connection rather than truth. A post that is emotional, novel or highly interactive may be recommended because people respond to it, not because it has been independently verified. The first item in either feed is a lead for investigation, not a final answer.
Posting news: which platform should you choose?
Choose X when distribution is the main objective
- You need to reach audiences beyond one political movement.
- Your subject involves fast-moving events, local reporting or specialist communities.
- You want journalists, officials and organizations to discover and respond to the post.
- You expect readers to share the item across a broad, international conversation.
On X, make the source and status of a claim visible in the post itself. Identify whether you are reporting an observation, quoting a statement or linking to a document. In a developing story, label what is confirmed, what is alleged and what remains unknown. This helps a post travel without losing its meaning when it is reposted outside the original thread.

- Your intended readers are strongly aligned with Trump or MAGA politics.
- You are participating in a conservative political community rather than seeking a general audience.
- Your post benefits from discussion inside a focused network of aligned accounts.
- You want to use Groups or direct messages to maintain a narrower community conversation.
A concentrated audience can improve relevance, but it can also make agreement look like confirmation. Include the original source and note significant counterevidence even when your followers are likely to share your interpretation.
Use both only when the extra work has a purpose
Cross-posting is sensible when the same verified update matters to both audiences. Adapt the wording to the platform instead of copying a context-free sentence. Preserve the original link or document, date the information and disclose any material change between versions. Posting on both services does not turn an unverified claim into a verified one.

Which platform is less censored?
Moderation policy and visibility are different questions
Neither platform’s public description proves that it is inherently more accurate or universally less censored. A service can leave a post online but limit its recommendation, replies or notifications. Conversely, removing illegal or restricted material is a moderation decision, not evidence that every remaining post is trustworthy.

X says harmful or offensive content may stay on the service but be made ineligible for Home recommendations, top replies, For You recommendations and push notifications. It also says it can add context through Moments and prebunks during civic processes and crises. These controls affect visibility and framing; they do not certify the factual content of a post.
What Truth Social says it does
TMTG’s 2026 filing says Truth Social prohibits illegal and other restricted content and uses human review together with third-party technology to support moderation while preserving open expression. The company’s stated approach is not the same as an absence of moderation. It also does not establish that content is more reliable or that every viewpoint receives equal distribution.
How to interpret the difference
If “less censored” means fewer removals, public policy statements alone do not provide a complete, independently comparable measurement. If it means a post is more likely to reach followers, recommendation eligibility, account settings, engagement and the subject matter all matter. Judge the specific visibility outcome rather than assigning a blanket label to an entire platform.

Trust the verification process, not the platform name. Reuters Institute’s 2025 report says trusted news brands and official government sources remain the places people most often name when checking whether online information is true or false. A post on either service can point you toward evidence, but the feed itself is not a verification authority.
A practical verification workflow
- Open the original source. Follow the link to the court filing, agency release, company statement, transcript, dataset or full video. If no source is provided, treat the post as an unverified assertion.
- Check who is speaking. Confirm the account’s identity, role and whether it has direct knowledge. A repost is not independent confirmation.
- Check the date and location. Old photographs and videos are frequently recirculated as if they describe a current event. Confirm the time, place and relevant edition or jurisdiction.
- Separate fact from interpretation. Mark what the document establishes, what the poster infers and what remains disputed.
- Compare independent reporting. Look for confirmation from a trusted news organization or an official source that did not simply repeat the same social post.
- Delay high-impact sharing. Do not repost an unconfirmed claim about public safety, elections, health, financial markets or an individual’s alleged conduct merely because it is trending.
Signals that require extra caution
- A screenshot without a link to the underlying post or document.
- Language claiming that every other outlet is hiding the “real” story.
- Anonymous sourcing with no description of how the information was obtained.
- A dramatic video whose date, place or editing cannot be established.
- Posts that turn a preliminary allegation into a definitive conclusion.
- Large engagement presented as proof of accuracy.

Political concentration and the risk of a narrow feed
Truth Social’s conservative and Trump-centered concentration is useful for understanding that movement’s messages, priorities and reactions. It can also reduce incidental exposure to opposing evidence. A feed that repeatedly confirms one interpretation may feel coherent while omitting facts that would change the conclusion.
X is politically mixed, but a mixed network does not automatically create balance. Its recommendation system learns from your follows, likes, replies, watched media and network activity. Repeatedly engaging with one type of post can produce a similarly narrow experience at larger scale. Following a range of credible sources and occasionally checking direct account pages is more reliable than assuming the default feed is neutral.
Associated Press quoted Cornell doctoral student Roxana Muenster describing “a lot of hate speech and extremism on the platform due to their lax approach to content moderation.” That observation is a warning about the environment some users may encounter, not a factual verdict on every post or every user. Apply the same source-checking standard to claims about the platform itself.

A safer way to use either platform for news
Build a source list before an event breaks
Follow the relevant government agencies, emergency services, courts, companies, local reporters and subject specialists directly. Add sources from outside your usual political community. A prepared list reduces dependence on whichever account the recommendation system happens to surface first.
Use platform posts as pointers
When a post makes a consequential claim, move outward to the source document and independent coverage. Save the document’s publication date and exact wording. If the post links only to a commentary article, keep looking for the primary record.
Make corrections visible
If you publish an error, update or follow up with the correction clearly rather than silently deleting context that others may already have copied. State what changed and why. This practice matters more on X, where a post can spread far beyond its original audience, but it is useful on Truth Social as well.
Protect your attention
Mute topics, accounts or conversations that add heat without evidence. Do not confuse constant notifications with better awareness. A smaller, deliberately chosen source list is often more informative than an unrestricted stream of viral posts.

Bottom line for posters and news followers
X is the better general-purpose platform for posting and following news because its U.S. reach is substantially larger and its network supports faster discovery across journalists, officials, organizations and eyewitnesses. Truth Social is the better fit for a reader or publisher whose primary goal is a Trump-centered, conservative audience and a focused political community. Neither platform settles whether a claim is true. Use the platform for discovery and conversation, then verify the claim through the original record, a trusted news organization or an official government source.
