For a quick connection on one or a few devices, use your phone’s hotspot—if your mobile plan permits tethering. Choose a travel router when you want several devices on one shared Wi-Fi network, plan to reuse hotel Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or want to manage routing and VPN settings in one place. A travel router is not itself an internet service: it needs an upstream connection, and it adds gear to carry and power.
Travel router vs. phone hotspot: what is the difference?
A phone hotspot shares the phone’s cellular connection with nearby devices over Wi-Fi. A travel router creates a separate local Wi-Fi network, but it must get internet from somewhere else—such as hotel Wi-Fi, Ethernet, a USB modem, or a tethered phone. The available connection methods depend on the router model; GL.iNet lists these options for its Opal GL-SFT1200.
That distinction matters: the hotspot is both an internet connection and a way to share it, while the router is primarily a way to share or manage an existing connection. Some travel routers can also use cellular modems, but that is a separate upstream source, not an automatic feature of every router.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich should you choose?
| Travel situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need internet briefly on one or a few devices and have a suitable mobile plan. | Phone hotspot | It avoids carrying and configuring another device. |
| You want several devices to join one network. | Travel router | It can share an upstream connection through its own Wi-Fi network. |
| You expect to use hotel Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet. | Travel router | Compatible models can connect to venue Wi-Fi in repeater mode or use Ethernet, then share the connection. |
| You want to tether your phone by USB and share that connection through a router. | Travel router, if compatible | Some models support phone tethering; the setup and required cable depend on the phone and router. |
| You want the fewest devices and simplest setup. | Phone hotspot | The phone is already with you, though tethering availability and plan terms still matter. |
These are practical trade-offs, not results of a controlled speed or battery comparison. There is no universal winner on speed or battery life: actual results depend on the phone, router, network, usage, and carrier.

When a phone hotspot is the better choice
Use the hotspot when convenience matters more than having a separate shared network. Turn on Personal Hotspot or the equivalent setting on your phone, then join it from the other device. Your phone’s cellular coverage and plan determine whether this works and what it costs.
- Check that your carrier and plan allow tethering, including while roaming.
- Confirm the plan’s tethering allowance and any roaming charges before relying on it.
- Expect the phone to supply the cellular connection and power the hotspot. The battery and data impact varies; there is no single reliable figure for every phone and trip.
- Consider coverage at your destination: a hotspot cannot provide cellular service where your phone has no usable connection.
When a travel router earns its place
A travel router is useful when you repeatedly need to connect several devices, share a venue connection, or keep your own local Wi-Fi network while changing upstream sources. It can also centralize network configuration, including VPN features on models that support them. Verify the features and supported connection modes for the specific model rather than assuming every travel router offers the same options.

For example, GL.iNet describes its Opal GL-SFT1200 as supporting repeater, phone tethering, USB modem, and cable connections. The manufacturer lists dimensions of 118 × 85 × 30 mm, weight of 145 g, and USB-C power input of 5V/3A. These are product specifications, not independent performance results. Its advertised Wi-Fi rates are not a promise of equivalent internet speed while traveling.

Before buying, check the current model specifications, included power accessories, firmware, and intended upstream connection. A router also needs a way to receive internet; it does not replace mobile data, hotel access, or an Ethernet connection.

Using a travel router with hotel Wi-Fi
Many hotels use a captive portal: a web page where guests must interact or sign in before internet access is granted. A compatible travel router can join hotel Wi-Fi in repeater mode and broadcast a separate network for your devices. GL.iNet documents this setup and notes that portal behavior varies; authentication, device limits, MAC registration, or venue policy may require extra steps or help from hotel staff. It is not a guaranteed way around a login or access restriction. See the GL.iNet captive-portal guide.
If a portal does not load, the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance includes temporarily disabling VPN or DNS features in some cases. Do this only if appropriate for your setup: while those protections or routing features are disabled, the hotspot provider may be able to observe connection metadata during login. Follow the venue’s rules and ask staff for help if the network requires router registration.

Can you use a phone as a travel router’s internet source?
Some compatible routers accept phone tethering over USB. This lets the phone provide the upstream connection while the router shares it over Wi-Fi. Instructions differ by device; GL.iNet’s tethering instructions provide one model-specific example.
iPhone and GL.iNet router example
- Connect the iPhone to the router’s USB port with a cable that supports data.
- Accept the iPhone’s trust prompt if it appears.
- On the iPhone, open Personal Hotspot settings and enable “Allow Others to Join.”
- In the router’s administration page, select the phone’s tethered connection.
Android and GL.iNet router example
- Connect the Android phone to the router’s USB port using a data-capable cable.
- If prompted, choose USB Tethering or File Transfer as appropriate for the phone.
- Enable Personal Hotspot or USB Tethering in the phone’s settings; menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Select the tethered connection in the router’s administration page.
If the connection does not appear, check that the router has adequate power and that the cable supports data rather than charging only. Phone, router, operating-system, and firmware compatibility can affect the steps and result.
