To copy individual files from a Samsung Galaxy to a Mac, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, unlock it, approve the connection, and choose Transferring files or MTP in the phone’s USB notification. Samsung documents copying files through Finder, but if your Mac does not show the phone there, use a compatible Mac app that supports Android MTP. For a full device backup rather than selected files, use Samsung Smart Switch.
Choose the transfer method that fits the job

Copy selected files over USB
- Connect the Galaxy. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer and has connectors compatible with your phone and Mac. Some cables only charge.
- Unlock and authorize the phone. Approve any access prompt that appears. In the Galaxy’s USB notification or connection settings, select Transferring files or MTP.
- Open the phone on the Mac. Samsung’s documented procedure is to open Finder, select the Galaxy under Devices, and drag the files you want to a folder on the Mac. Finder visibility is not guaranteed across every Mac and Android configuration.
- Verify the copy. For a large or important transfer, copy a small sample first and confirm it opens from the Mac before moving the rest.
- Eject the phone. Eject it from the Mac before disconnecting when it is shown there.
Samsung’s Galaxy backup and restore guide describes the Finder workflow. Google’s Android file-transfer instructions explain file-transfer mode but document desktop workflows for Windows and Chromebook rather than a native Mac Finder process. If Finder does not expose the phone’s storage, a Mac application with Android MTP support, such as OpenMTP, is an alternative. Check the app’s current compatibility and download source before installing it.
Use Smart Switch for a device backup
Choose Smart Switch when you want a computer backup or plan to restore content to another Galaxy device. Samsung describes Smart Switch as a way to transfer content to Galaxy phones and tablets; it does not transfer content to an iOS device. What can be transferred depends on the connected devices, so do not assume every app or protected item will be included. Samsung specifically cautions that secure or encrypted content, such as WhatsApp chats, may not transfer.

Smart Switch is not the practical choice for browsing arbitrary phone files on a Mac. For its Mac backup and restore app, Samsung’s Indonesia compatibility page lists Mac OS X 10.13 or later; requirements can vary by region and may change, so check the current support information for your location before installing. Move files through external storage
An external drive can serve as an intermediary if your Galaxy and Mac support the drive’s connector and storage format. Samsung documents copying files to compatible external storage, including a USB OTG flash drive or supported SD card.
- Connect compatible storage to the Galaxy.
- In the phone’s My Files app, select the files and copy or move them to the external storage.
- Safely unmount the storage from the phone.
- Connect it to the Mac and copy the files to the desired folder.
Connector fit, phone support, and storage format all matter. Samsung’s backup and restore guide describes the external-storage option.

Check compatibility before trying Quick Share and AirDrop
Google announced Quick Share interoperability with AirDrop on supported Android phones, beginning with Pixel devices and with expansion to partners including Samsung planned during 2026. That announcement does not establish that every Galaxy model can currently send files to every Mac. Before relying on wireless sharing, check support for your exact Galaxy model, software version, region, and Quick Share settings in Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement.
Why a Mac may not recognize a Samsung Galaxy
The cable charges but does not transfer data
Some USB cables are charging-only. Try a known data-capable cable with connectors that fit both devices. Samsung calls out cable capability in its backup and restore guidance.

The phone is locked or set to charging mode
Unlock the Galaxy, approve the connection prompt, and select Transferring files or MTP from its USB notification. The available wording can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung covers USB connection modes in its connection options guide.
The phone connects, but Finder does not show its files
Samsung documents selecting the Galaxy under Finder’s Devices, but Finder may not expose Android storage in every setup. Try a current Mac utility that supports Android MTP, such as OpenMTP, and verify that it is compatible with your macOS version.

The connection still fails
- Disconnect the phone and reconnect it with the phone unlocked.
- Confirm that file transfer/MTP is selected and any access prompt is allowed.
- Restart the phone and try the connection again.
- If Smart Switch is the software that fails to recognize the phone, follow Samsung’s current connection troubleshooting, which includes reinstalling its device driver where applicable.
