You can tag the website link in a Google Business Profile with UTM parameters, and GA4 will report the visits that arrive through that link under the campaign values you set, in the Traffic acquisition report. UTM tags only measure website visits. They do not count Profile interactions such as calls, directions or menu clicks. Those arrive through a separate Business Profile-to-GA4 link, and the two measurements are related but not interchangeable.

Three measurements that are easy to confuse

Most confusion about Profile tracking comes from treating three different numbers as one. Each is collected differently and answers a different question.

Measurement Where it appears What it counts How it gets there
UTM-tagged website traffic GA4 Traffic acquisition report Visits to your website whose landing URL carried the UTM parameters Parameters added to the website address saved in the Profile
Profile website clicks Profile performance data shared with the linked GA4 property Clicks on the website button or link inside the Profile The Business Profile-to-GA4 link
GA4 sessions and users Standard GA4 reports Sessions and users recorded by the GA4 tag on your site, from any source The GA4 tag installed on the destination site

A Profile click does not always become a GA4 session, because the page may fail to load, the visitor may close it before the tag fires, or an ad blocker may stop the tag. A GA4 session from Google may also have no Profile click behind it. Use UTM data to see which website visits came from the tagged link, and use the Profile link to see how the listing itself is performing.

Step 1: Build the tagged destination URL

Start with the canonical page you want visitors to reach from the Profile, then append three campaign parameters. Google’s campaign-tagging guidance recommends using utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign together. Google defines source as the referrer, medium as the marketing channel, and campaign as a product, slogan or promotion identifier.

Example:

https://www.example.com/&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp_listing

This is a practical convention for this use case, not a template Google prescribes for Business Profiles. It works because each value answers a clear reporting question.

Naming rules that keep reports clean

  • Use lowercase for every value. UTM values are case-sensitive, so GBP_Listing and gbp_listing create two separate rows.
  • Use underscores instead of spaces, and avoid near-duplicate spellings such as gbp, gmb and google_business for the same thing.
  • Write the scheme down once and apply it to every listing, page and team member who edits the Profile.

Multi-location organizations

If each location needs its own row in reports, give each listing a stable campaign value, such as gbp_location_123, and keep the other two parameters unchanged. Decide the location identifier before launch and do not rename it later, because changing a value starts a new reporting series. If you also want location-level reporting on a shared landing page, confirm that the GA4 reports will show the values you need before you roll the scheme out.

Step 2: Add the tagged URL to the Profile

  1. Sign in to the Google account that manages the Business Profile and open the listing in Google Business Profile Manager.
  2. Find the website field and replace the existing address with the tagged URL from Step 1.
  3. Save the change, then reopen the listing to confirm the saved address includes every parameter.

Do not assume the saved address is the address visitors reach. Profiles often hold a short or legacy URL, and the page you intend may redirect elsewhere. Check the live listing directly.

Step 3: Confirm the parameters survive redirects

Google’s guidance on missing traffic information notes that redirects can remove UTM parameters, including changes between secure and non-secure URLs. URL shorteners can also remove referral details. Check the full path from the Profile to the final page:

  • Open the tagged URL in a private browser window and watch the address bar. The parameters should still be present on the final page.
  • If the address changes to a clean URL, find the redirect rule that removes the query string and configure it to preserve parameters, or point the Profile straight at the final page.
  • Do not wrap the tagged URL in a shortener, because the shortener can drop the campaign data before the visit reaches your site.
  • Confirm the destination page loads normally and that the GA4 tag is present on it.

Step 4: Link the Profile to the GA4 property

The Profile link is a separate connection from UTM tagging. It shares Profile performance data, including website clicks, calls, directions, messages, bookings and menu clicks, with the GA4 property. Setting it up requires the right roles on both sides: the person in GA4 needs Administrator or Editor access, and the person in the Profile needs Owner or Manager access. One GA4 property can be linked to more than one Profile.

  1. In GA4, select Admin.
  2. In the Property column, select Product links, then select Google Business Profile links.
  3. Choose the Profile you want to link, then confirm data sharing.

Interface labels change over time, so match these names to what your property shows.

Step 5: Find the tagged visits in GA4

Google Analytics Help describes the mechanism this way: “When a user clicks a referral link, the URL parameters are sent to Analytics, and the parameter values are visible in the Traffic acquisition report.” To check your Profile traffic:

  1. In GA4, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  2. Use the dimension selector to show Session source / medium and Session campaign.
  3. Filter or search for gbp_listing in the campaign column, or the location value you chose. Rows that show google / organic with your campaign value are visits from the tagged link.

Expect a delay before new tagged visits appear. Google’s campaign-parameter documentation does not give a fixed processing window, so check the report after a period of normal traffic rather than immediately after publishing the change.

Test the path before you trust the numbers

  • Open the tagged URL yourself and confirm the page loads, stays on the intended landing page and keeps the parameters.
  • Use GA4’s real-time view to see whether your test visit registers with the campaign values. Treat it as a technical check only, and do not count it as business performance.
  • Once real visits arrive, compare the campaign rows against a period before the change. A change in the numbers reflects a change in tagging only if the scheme stayed the same during that period.

Why Profile traffic shows as direct / (none)

Traffic that reaches your site without campaign information is grouped as direct / (none). When Profile visits land there, check these causes in order:

  • The website address in the Profile was saved without the UTM parameters, or the parameters were mistyped.
  • A redirect, shortener or secure/non-secure change removed the query string before the page loaded.
  • The destination page does not load the GA4 tag correctly, so the visit is not recorded with its campaign context.
  • A visitor’s browser or an ad blocker interferes with the tracking cookies that GA4 uses. Google’s guidance on direct/(none) identifies this as a possible cause.
  • The visitor used a different Profile action. Calls, directions and messages do not carry your UTM parameters, so they will not appear as tagged website traffic.

Reading the results honestly

  • A tagged visit is a website session that carried your campaign values. It is not a Profile impression, and it is not a count of every person who saw the listing.
  • UTM tagging does not guarantee that every click is measured. Blocked scripts, closed tabs and browser privacy settings all reduce what GA4 can record.
  • Profile performance data and GA4 traffic data come from different systems. When the two disagree, trust each within its own scope rather than forcing them to match.

The setup is straightforward once the naming scheme is settled. The more useful work is keeping that scheme stable and confirming each step of the path, so the numbers you read in GA4 reflect real visits from the listing.
