SnapperGPS tracks sea turtles by recording brief snapshots of satellite signals when a turtle surfaces, then estimating locations later in the cloud. It is a non-real-time research system, not a live tracker. A 2021 deployment on loggerhead turtles in Cape Verde showed that the method could produce tracks when tags captured surface data—but only three successful tracks came from 20 deployed tags, so it did not establish reliable performance across turtle populations or field conditions.

How does SnapperGPS track sea turtles?

SnapperGPS is an open-source wildlife location-tracking system built around snapshot GNSS. Its official project description calls it “a small, low-cost, and low-power GNSS receiver for non-real-time wildlife tracking.” Unlike a conventional GPS receiver, it does not fully decode satellite navigation data on the tag. Instead, it captures a very short, low-resolution sample of satellite signals; probabilistic algorithms then process those samples in the cloud to estimate a position. The SnapperGPS project describes the system and its workflow.

That approach is relevant to turtles because GNSS signals do not travel through water. A turtle must surface for a tag to collect satellite signals. The 2022 symposium abstract says traditional GNSS can require at least 30 consecutive seconds at the surface, and assisted GNSS still several seconds, whereas snapshot GNSS can use a few milliseconds. A short surfacing makes a brief capture possible, but it does not guarantee a position: the receiver still needs adequate signal capture and working surfacing detection.

The published design comprises three open-source components: receiver hardware, a web application for USB configuration, and cloud processing. In the intended workflow, the receiver stores snapshots during deployment; researchers recover it, upload the data and download a processed track. This means SnapperGPS is not a way to watch a turtle move live.

What did the first loggerhead deployment show?

The first reported deployment took place in summer 2021 on nesting loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) on Maio, Cape Verde. The University of Oxford report says 20 tags were deployed and nine recovered. The 2022 symposium abstract reports three successful tracks from the recovered-tag deployment.

The tracks showed different local patterns: some turtles travelled around the island, while others stayed near their nesting beach. The abstract attributes missing or incomplete tracks in part to a surfacing-detection issue, and says the positioning method worked when the receiver collected surface data. Oxford also noted that deployment was late in the season and that technical failures affected the result.

This was a small field demonstration of a method, not a population-level movement study. Three tracks cannot establish how loggerheads generally move, and the deployment does not show that the same system will work reliably for other turtle species, attachment configurations or ocean conditions.

What accuracy, battery life and cost were reported?

Accuracy figures come from different settings and should not be treated as one guaranteed field specification.

Evidence Reported result What it means
2022 deployment abstract Around 10 m median localization accuracy Reported for the Maio deployment; not a universal accuracy guarantee.
2023 hardware paper 12 m median error Measured in controlled static and dynamic semi-urban tests, not in the turtle deployment.

The peer-reviewed 2023 Journal of Open Hardware paper reports receiver component cost under $30 and operation for more than a year on a 40 mAh battery. These are reported design figures, not the price of a complete assembled, waterproof tag or a promise about service life in every deployment. The 2022 deployment abstract separately describes that version as running for several years on two LR44 batteries and costing under $30 excluding its enclosure; that is a distinct reported configuration.

For the Maio deployment specifically, Oxford says the custom enclosures were tested waterproof to at least 100 m. This applies to those deployment enclosures, not automatically to other SnapperGPS builds.

How does SnapperGPS compare with other turtle-tracking methods?

The right telemetry method depends on the scale of the question, whether data must arrive in real time, local receiver access and the practical chance of recovering a tag. NOAA Fisheries distinguishes several approaches in its overview of sea turtle tagging efforts.

Method Useful for Data and practical constraints
Satellite transmitters Long-distance migration when fine-scale movement is not required Satellite-linked reporting; NOAA describes these as useful for broad movements.
GPS tags Local habitat use and fine-scale movement in coastal foraging areas Provide finer-scale location information, but tag performance depends on surfacing and tag design.
Acoustic telemetry Nearshore tracking where receiver infrastructure can be used Acoustic transmission range varies from 25 m to 1 km depending on habitat complexity, depth and substrate, according to NOAA.
VHF telemetry Relatively low-cost local tracking Requires the turtle to be at the surface for signal reception.
SnapperGPS snapshot GNSS Research where brief surface samples and later recovery of the receiver are workable Stores signal snapshots for later cloud processing; it is not real-time and depends on successful capture and receiver recovery.

SnapperGPS is therefore a possible fit for a particular research design, not a universal replacement for satellite, GPS, acoustic or VHF telemetry. A study that needs migration-scale reporting, continuous fine-scale locations or nearshore monitoring with fixed receivers has different requirements from one that can accept stored snapshots and later data recovery.

What should researchers know about setup and current access?

The project’s documented workflow is to configure the receiver, deploy it, capture snapshots, recover the receiver, upload data and download a track. As of 4 October 2026, the project site says the old site’s configuration, upload and download features are deprecated from 1 October 2026 and directs users to another app for continued cloud use. Check the current app and data-access instructions before planning a deployment; the replacement app’s service terms and long-term availability are not established here.

The older configure interface requires WebUSB and recommends a Chromium-based browser. Its details are on the SnapperGPS configure page. Researchers should verify that their chosen configuration, upload route and data export work before attaching tags and deploying them.

Why might there be few fixes or outliers?

The project’s troubleshooting guidance names two common concerns: “The fraction of successful position fixes is low / I do not get any successful fixes” and “There are many outliers in my tracks.” For turtle deployments, the first question is whether snapshots were captured while the receiver was at the surface. No fix can be expected from a period spent underwater, and even surfacing may not provide enough usable signal. The Maio deployment also identified surfacing detection as a source of missing or incomplete tracks.

Outliers should be treated as a data-quality issue rather than evidence of unusual turtle travel without checking the snapshots and processing results. The deployment evidence establishes that position estimates could be produced when surface data were collected; it does not establish a universal fix rate or a single outlier rate for all builds and environments.
