WakaTime automatically estimates your active coding time by collecting editor and IDE activity heartbeats, then groups them into dashboards and reports by project, language, editor, branch, and other dimensions. It is useful for seeing where your editor time goes, but it is not a measure of every hour you spend thinking, reading, or working away from the keyboard.
What WakaTime tracks
WakaTime is a developer-productivity service built around open-source plugins for editors and IDEs. While you work, a plugin sends heartbeat events; WakaTime combines nearby events into durations and displays the results in dashboards, goals, reports, and team views. Its feature documentation lists activity by project, file, branch, commit or pull request, feature, operating system, editor or IDE, and programming language. See WakaTime’s feature overview and developer documentation.
Active editor time, not a complete workday
WakaTime’s FAQ says heartbeats are triggered by actions in the editor, and its feature page says tracking stops when you stop typing. That means the totals describe active editor interaction as WakaTime detects it—not all time spent planning, reading documentation, thinking through a problem, or working in another app. Heartbeat timing is stated by WakaTime to be accurate to one microsecond, but that precision does not turn the metric into a comprehensive timesheet.
Nearby heartbeats are grouped according to a keystroke-timeout setting. WakaTime’s API documentation describes a 15-minute default; the resulting session boundaries therefore depend partly on that setting. A long pause can separate activity that felt like one work session into distinct recorded periods.

How to set up WakaTime
- Create or sign in to an account. Use the WakaTime website to open your account.
- Install the plugin for your editor or IDE. Choose the official open-source plugin for your environment, such as VS Code or a JetBrains IDE. Installation steps vary by editor; consult WakaTime’s plugin directory.
- Authenticate the plugin. When prompted, provide the account API key. Keep this key private; it authorizes access to your account.
- Code normally and review the dashboard. Explore the available project, language, editor, branch, goal, and date-range views to find the breakdown that answers your question.
- Add other supported activity sources if needed. WakaTime also offers desktop-app and browser-extension options for supported activity outside an IDE. Check its integration listings for availability and setup details.
- Check privacy and project visibility before sharing. Confirm what project information is visible and who can access any dashboard or report you plan to share.
What data is collected—and what is not
WakaTime says its plugins do not upload source-code contents. Instead, the FAQ describes heartbeat metadata that may include the current file path, project and branch names, editor, language, libraries or imports, line counts, cursor position, lines added or removed, AI input and output token counts, AI plan names, session IDs, computer hostname, category, operating system, timezone, and timestamps. The feature documentation summarizes the distinction as: “Only file paths are sent, not file contents.” Read the WakaTime FAQ for its description of data collection and handling.
Not uploading code does not mean the activity is anonymous. Project names, paths, branch names, imports, hostname, and timing can disclose information about your work or environment. Review the metadata and privacy controls that apply to your account before enabling tracking on sensitive projects. WakaTime says activity is sent securely to its servers for processing and dashboard display.

Exporting activity and protecting API keys
The FAQ says users can export coding activity as JSON, either as raw heartbeats or daily totals. The API documentation also supports stats, summaries, goals, organization dashboards, OAuth scopes, and embeddable charts or JSON. Never put a secret API key on a public website: WakaTime’s API guidance recommends using a one-time embeddable chart or JSON URL when publishing a visualization.
Free and paid plans: what to compare
WakaTime’s FAQ says free-plan coding activity is stored indefinitely, while some historical ranges become available when upgrading. That is different from saying every historical report or advanced feature is available on the free plan. The current WakaTime pricing page highlights paid capabilities that include historical stats, data export, privacy features, and an AI dashboard.

Using WakaTime with a team
Team dashboards add shared reporting, private leaderboards, goals, and commit or pull-request metrics. These views can help a team understand activity across projects and tools, but editor activity should not be treated as a direct measure of output, quality, or employee performance. A useful rollout makes the metric’s limits clear, agrees on what the team will use it for, and reviews privacy settings before making dashboards visible.

When WakaTime is a good fit

- Use it to spot patterns. Breakdowns by project, language, editor, or branch can make changes in your coding habits easier to see.
- Do not use it as a complete timesheet. It stops when typing stops, so work involving reading, planning, meetings, or other applications may not appear as coding time.
