To know when a model first appears on an Arena leaderboard, save a snapshot of one category, compare each later snapshot with the previous one, and alert on names that are newly observed. That timestamp shows when your monitor first saw a name—not when the model was released. The title’s “70-line” figure is a target, not a verified implementation: no code here is claimed to have been run or tested.

What this tracker can—and cannot—tell you

Arena rankings come from people comparing model responses and expressing preferences. The 2024 paper Chatbot Arena: An Open Platform for Evaluating LLMs by Human Preference describes pairwise comparisons based on crowdsourced preferences, followed by statistical methods to calculate scores and ranks. Its authors wrote, “To assess the performance of LLMs, the research community has introduced a variety of benchmarks.” They reported more than 240,000 votes during the platform’s initial period of operation; that is a historical figure from the paper, not a current vote total.

A snapshot tracker answers a narrower, useful question: “When did this monitor first observe this name on this board?” It cannot establish a model’s launch date, the date Arena added it, or whether a model is new under a different name. Arena’s live leaderboard includes multiple categories, such as text, coding, web development, image generation, video generation, and agents. A name may appear on one category before another, so record and monitor categories separately.

Rank is also not a universal measure of capability. A 2025 critique, The Leaderboard Illusion, argues that private pre-release tests, selective score disclosure, and unequal access to battle data can distort Arena rankings and encourage optimization for Arena-specific dynamics. Those are the authors’ findings and interpretation; they do not demonstrate that every Arena rank is invalid.

Choose a data source before writing the scraper

The comparison logic is simple; getting data reliably and permissibly is the part that depends on the source. The available documentation does not establish a current official scraper endpoint, permission, rate limits, page structure, or refresh schedule. Confirm those details in current official documentation before building a production monitor or sending recurring requests.

Approach What to verify Main trade-off
Parse the official leaderboard page Whether automated access is permitted, whether the page exposes the required data, and how often its structure changes. Current scraping terms and limits are not established here. Directly tied to the public page, but page markup can change and require maintenance.
Use a documented structured endpoint, if one is available and permitted That the endpoint is official or otherwise authorized, its schema, supported categories, freshness, and request limits. Current official endpoint details are not established here. Structured fields can be easier to process, but only if access and stability are documented.
Use a third-party API Provider, coverage, update behavior, limits, terms, and dependency risk; confirm the service is still available and suitable for your use. A third party may simplify parsing, but its data and availability are not official Arena support.

For example, a third-party OpenAPI schema describes leaderboard data with fields such as rank, public model name, organization, provider, and capabilities, and includes modality labels such as chat, webdev, image, video, and search. It is an example of a structured representation, not proof that Arena provides or endorses that API.

Build the monitor as a repeatable snapshot comparison

The following is a language-neutral design for a small scraper. Adapt the fetch step to an access method that is currently documented and allowed; the endpoints, code, and line count are not verified here.

  1. Select one board. Choose a category and keep it fixed for each comparison. Store the category identifier with every snapshot.
  2. Fetch the current data. Request the same board through the approved source. Check for an unsuccessful response before attempting to parse it.
  3. Extract names consistently. Keep each original model name for display. Also derive a normalized comparison key—for example, trim surrounding whitespace and apply a consistent case rule—without treating normalization as proof that two names identify the same model.
  4. Load the prior snapshot. Read the saved names for that same category and source. If none exists, save the fetched data as the baseline and report that tracking has started; do not label every name in the baseline as a new release.
  5. Compare sets. Compute names present in the current snapshot but absent from the previous one. Preserve original strings in the alert, alongside the category and observation time.
  6. Save before the next poll. Store the complete current snapshot with a UTC timestamp, category, source, and names. Retaining snapshots makes it possible to inspect what changed and when.
  7. Report separately from rank movement. A newly observed name is one signal. Rank changes among names already present are a different signal and should not be reported as new-model appearances.

Handle edge cases without creating false alerts

  • Renamed models: A changed display name may represent a rename rather than a new model. Without a stable identifier or authoritative mapping, flag it as a newly observed name and avoid asserting identity or release status.
  • Duplicate variants: Preserve the source’s full strings. Do not collapse variants solely because they share a prefix or organization; normalization should prevent trivial formatting differences, not erase meaningful distinctions.
  • Category changes: Compare snapshots only within the same category. If a model moves to or appears on another board, record that as an observation for that category rather than mixing board membership.
  • Fetch failures: Do not replace a valid snapshot with an empty one after a timeout, access error, or non-success response. Record the failed poll and retain the last good snapshot so a temporary outage does not make every name appear new on recovery.
  • Malformed or unexpected data: Validate that the response contains the expected name field and category before saving. If parsing fails, report an error and keep the previous good snapshot rather than silently recording incomplete data.
  • Polling interval: Choose an interval only after checking the source’s permitted request rate and update behavior. No frequency or refresh cadence is established here. For dependable alerts, log poll times and failures, and make the next poll wait according to the source’s documented limits.

Interpret alerts as first-seen evidence

An alert should say that a name was first observed by this monitor at a given UTC time on a specified category, and identify the data source. It should not call that time the model’s release date. The leaderboard is live and its membership and ordering can change, so saved snapshots provide the audit trail for what your monitor actually saw.

  • Programming Lessons: This raspberry pi 5 learning kit ships with step by step instructions and provides 21 lessons to take you through identifying components reading code and running it in the terminal

Arena’s human-preference rankings are one useful signal among others, not a universal capability score. A newly listed name tells you about observed board membership; its rank alone does not settle how capable the model is across tasks.
