The TP-Link TL-SG1008D is a straightforward way to add eight wired Gigabit Ethernet ports to a home or small-office network. TP-Link lists auto-negotiating 10/100/1000 Mbps ports and plug-and-play operation, so it suits buyers who need more connections but do not need to configure or manage the switch. It is not a fit if you need managed-network features, and its specifications should be checked against the hardware revision sold in your region.

What the TL-SG1008D does

A switch expands the number of wired Ethernet connections available on a router or network. Connect the switch to the network, then connect wired devices—such as computers, TVs, consoles, access points, or a NAS—to its other ports. TP-Link describes the TL-SG1008D as an unmanaged desktop switch with plug-and-play operation; the manufacturer says no configuration is required. Its UK product page lists eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, auto-negotiation, auto MDI/MDIX, and IEEE 802.3x flow control.

It is intended for adding ports, not for controlling network traffic through a management interface. If you need configurable VLANs, monitoring, or other managed-switch controls, confirm those features on a different product before buying; the TL-SG1008D materials cited here describe it as unmanaged.

Specifications and revision differences

TP-Link’s UK product page and its V9.0 datasheet do not agree on every specification. Treat the figures below as tied to the named source, not as universal specifications for all TL-SG1008D units.

#1 Best Overall
TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch - Ethernet Splitter | Plug & Play | Fanless | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Traffic Optimization | Unmanaged | Lifetime Protection (TL-SG108)
  • 8 GIGABIT PORTS: Features 8 RJ45 ports supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds, providing high-speed wired network connectivity for computers, printers, gaming consoles, and other Ethernet-enabled devices
  • PLUG AND PLAY SETUP: No configuration required; simply connect the switch to your network devices and it is ready to use immediately, making network expansion quick and hassle-free
  • FANLESS QUIET DESIGN: The fanless design ensures silent operation, making this switch suitable for noise-sensitive environments such as home offices, bedrooms, or conference rooms
  • STURDY METAL CONSTRUCTION: Built with a durable metal housing and shielded ports that provide reliable performance, better heat dissipation, and protection against electromagnetic interference
  • TRAFFIC OPTIMIZATION: Supports IEEE 802.3x flow control and advanced traffic optimization technology to reduce data bottlenecks and ensure smooth, efficient data transfer across your network
Item TP-Link UK product page TP-Link V9.0 datasheet
Ports 8 × 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 8 × Gigabit Ethernet
Switching capacity 16 Gbps not stated in the cited V9.0 datasheet
Jumbo frame 15 KB 16 KB
Maximum power consumption 4.63 W at 220 V/50 Hz 3.9 W at 220 V/50 Hz
QoS not stated on the cited product page 802.1p/DSCP QoS

The V9.0 figures come from TP-Link’s 2021 V9.0 datasheet. TP-Link’s UK product page also lists a 4K MAC address table, a plastic case designed for desktop or wall mounting, dimensions of 180 × 90 × 25.5 mm, and an external 5 V DC/0.6 A adapter. Confirm the documentation for the revision you will receive rather than assuming every listed detail applies to every version.

Power use and the “up to 80%” claim

TP-Link says the switch can detect idle ports and reduce their power use, claiming savings of up to 80% compared with a TP-Link conventional switch. The same manufacturer page says the actual saving varies with usage. That is a maximum comparative claim, not a guarantee that every installation will use 80% less power.

  • Durable and convenient design; offers extended reach and flexibility for daily use, ideal replacement for original power supply
  • Includes 1 AC Adapter; backed by 24-month exchange warranty for peace of mind

Published maximum consumption also depends on the source and revision: TP-Link’s UK page gives 4.63 W at 220 V/50 Hz, while the V9.0 datasheet gives 3.9 W at the same stated voltage and frequency. Do not treat either number as a measured typical draw for every unit.

What the 2013 hands-on review found

Patrick Kennedy’s ServeTheHome review, published July 25, 2013, describes several days of normal-traffic testing on one sample. The review reports a setup with one port streaming HD Netflix, four ports involved in NAS backups, and two servers transferring files; Kennedy says the switch “did not hiccup.” This is a historical account of that sample and workload, not a current test or a guarantee for other revisions. See the ServeTheHome review.

TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Switch | Easy Smart Managed | Plug & Play | Desktop/Wall-Mount | Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports | Support QoS, Vlan, IGMP and LAG (TL-SG108E)
  • 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Expand your network with 8 high-speed ethernet ports for enhanced connectivity and performance
  • Easy Smart Management: Manage and configure your network effortlessly via a web interface or free software
  • Support VLAN: Segment traffic with up to 32 VLANs simultaneously out of 4K VLAN IDs for better security
  • Network Monitoring: Monitor your network effectively with port mirroring, loop prevention, and cable diagnostics
  • IGMP Snooping: Enhances multicast application performance for improved network efficiency

The reviewer says he used an Extech 380803 True RMS power analyzer and 2-meter CAT6 cables. These were the reported readings for the reviewed sample in 2013:

Reported condition Power reading
At boot 3.0 W
Idle, no active RJ45 link 1.0 W
Idle, two active links 1.2 W
Idle, eight Gigabit links 2.0 W
Active, two Gigabit links 2.0 W
Active, eight Gigabit links 5.2 W

Those sample measurements differ from the maximum figures in TP-Link’s published materials. They should be read as Kennedy’s observations under the review’s stated setup, not as current or model-wide power specifications. The reviewer also described the plastic enclosure as light and inexpensive, noted that the status LEDs were on the opposite side from the rear ports, and found the fanless unit silent. He noted that it had no Kensington lock slot. His overall assessment was that it added ports inexpensively without offering advanced features; the $28 purchase price he reported applied to his Amazon purchase in 2013, not today’s pricing.

Who should consider it—and what to check

The TL-SG1008D makes sense when the main requirement is simply more wired Gigabit ports and a no-configuration setup. Look elsewhere if the network requires managed controls or a feature not confirmed for the exact revision you plan to buy.
