For most homes whose internet plan and wired devices fit within 2.5Gbps, the TP-Link Archer BE550 is the sensible choice. Choose the Archer BE800 when you can use its 10Gbps WAN/LAN connectivity, SFP+/RJ45 combo port, or higher advertised Wi-Fi band rates. Check current prices before deciding whether the BE800’s additional hardware is worth its price premium; current street prices and stock are not established here.

What is the difference between the Archer BE550 and BE800?

Both are tri-band Wi-Fi 7 routers with Multi-Link Operation (MLO), EasyMesh compatibility, and USB 3.0. The practical differences are the BE800’s faster listed wireless bands, 10Gbps wired options, and larger antenna and stream counts. The BE550 instead provides five 2.5Gbps Ethernet ports, which may already be enough for a multi-gig internet connection and several wired devices.

Specification Archer BE550 Archer BE800
Wi-Fi class and listed band rates BE9300: 6GHz 5,760Mbps; 5GHz 2,880Mbps; 2.4GHz 574Mbps BE19000: 6GHz 11,520Mbps; 5GHz 5,760Mbps; 2.4GHz 1,376Mbps
Ethernet ports 1 × 2.5Gbps WAN; 4 × 2.5Gbps LAN 1 × 10Gbps WAN/LAN; 1 × 10Gbps SFP+/RJ45 combo WAN/LAN; 4 × 2.5Gbps LAN
Antennas and streams in TP-Link’s comparison 6 antennas; 6 streams 8 antennas; 12 streams
Other listed features USB 3.0; EasyMesh; no LED screen listed USB 3.0; EasyMesh; LED screen listed

Specifications are from TP-Link’s Archer BE550 product page, Archer BE800 product page, and product comparison. The advertised band rates are theoretical, aggregate figures—not the speed one device should expect to receive. Actual throughput depends on supported client hardware, configuration, network link speeds, interference, distance, and other conditions. The antenna and stream counts likewise do not establish a specific range or speed advantage in a particular home.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the Archer BE550 if 2.5Gbps is enough

  • Your internet service and wired devices do not need links faster than 2.5Gbps.
  • You want several multi-gig wired connections: its four 2.5Gbps LAN ports sit alongside a 2.5Gbps WAN port.
  • You would rather avoid paying for 10Gbps ports and higher listed band rates you do not expect to use.

Choose the Archer BE800 if you have a use for 10Gbps

  • You have, or plan to get, compatible 10Gbps internet service and equipment.
  • You need a 10Gbps connection for a wired device or network segment, or specifically need the SFP+/RJ45 combo port.
  • Your Wi-Fi clients and environment can make use of its higher advertised band rates. Those rates alone do not guarantee faster real-world results.

The BE800’s two 10Gbps ports cannot both be configured as WAN ports at the same time. TP-Link also says 10Gbps internet speeds require compatible service plans and equipment. Its BE800 product page notes that 320MHz channel width is available only on 6GHz and that regional rules may prevent simultaneous wide channels in some countries. Wi-Fi 7 features depend on compatible clients and regional availability; TP-Link says the product may not support every mandatory feature in the ratified IEEE 802.11be specification.

Do you need a 10GbE router?

Not simply because an internet plan is described as “multi-gig.” Compare the actual service speed and equipment with the port speed you need. The BE550’s 2.5Gbps WAN connection is the relevant ceiling for its wired internet link; the BE800 offers a 10Gbps WAN/LAN option for compatible faster service. A 10Gbps port will not make a slower ISP connection faster, and a 10Gbps service requires compatible equipment and cabling throughout the relevant path.

Also consider the devices that will connect locally. A 10Gbps NAS, workstation, or switch can be a reason to choose the BE800 even if internet service is slower. If all wired connections top out at 2.5Gbps or below, the BE800’s extra port capacity may go unused.

Will the BE800 provide better Wi-Fi coverage?

TP-Link lists both routers in a four-bedroom coverage category, but that is not a guarantee for every home. Walls, building materials, layout, interference, router placement, client radios, and local regulations affect coverage. The BE800’s eight antennas and twelve streams compared with the BE550’s six antennas and six streams are specification differences, not proof of a particular range result.

If the problem is a dead zone, first consider router placement and whether a wired access point or compatible mesh expansion fits the layout. Both models are listed as EasyMesh-compatible, but that label does not guarantee every model, firmware version, or feature will interoperate identically. Check the exact device and firmware compatibility before buying mesh equipment.

Is the BE800 worth the extra cost?

There is no dependable answer without the prices available to you and a concrete need for its extra capabilities. Compare current prices for the correct hardware versions, then ask whether you will use 10Gbps Ethernet, the SFP+/RJ45 combo connection, or Wi-Fi capabilities supported by your clients. If not, the BE550’s five 2.5Gbps ports and tri-band Wi-Fi 7 may meet the need without paying for capacity that sits idle. If you do need 10Gbps connectivity, the BE800 is the model in this pair with that option. Neither current street price nor stock is established by TP-Link’s specification pages.
