A towing hitch, an engine oil cooler, and a transmission cooler do different jobs—and an added cooler does not increase a vehicle’s towing rating. Because the vehicle, engine, transmission, trailer, and driving conditions are unspecified, there is no evidence-based universal “best” cooler. Confirm what your vehicle requires in its owner’s manual or with a tow-vehicle dealer, then buy only a cooler verified for that exact application.
First, separate the hitch from the coolers
A hitch is coupling hardware that connects a trailer to a tow vehicle. An engine oil cooler removes heat from engine oil; a transmission cooler removes heat from automatic transmission fluid (ATF). These are not interchangeable parts. For example, Ford’s listing identifies its towing-related 5.0L component as an automatic transmission oil cooler, not an engine oil cooler.
Towing, steep climbs, heavy loads, and high ambient temperatures can increase thermal stress. That does not mean every tow vehicle needs an auxiliary cooler: the appropriate system depends on the specific vehicle and how it is used.

Start with the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance, not a generic product ranking. A Big Tex Trailers manual says, “Depending on the size of the trailer, you may need to install a separate engine oil cooler.” It also advises asking the tow-vehicle dealer whether separate engine-oil or transmission-oil cooling is necessary. The trailer manual’s statement is not a universal requirement for every vehicle or trailer.

- Check the tow vehicle’s owner’s manual for towing instructions, cooling requirements, and any restrictions for your engine or transmission.
- Ask a dealer familiar with the exact vehicle whether an auxiliary engine oil cooler, transmission cooler, or neither is appropriate for your trailer and expected use.
- Confirm the part’s fitment for the vehicle, engine, and transmission before ordering. A towing-related label alone does not establish compatibility with your particular setup.
A cooler does not raise towing capacity
Cooling hardware cannot upgrade a vehicle, hitch, or ball rating. The Big Tex manual states: “THE TOW VEHICLE, HITCH AND BALL MUST HAVE A RATED TOWING CAPACITY EQUAL TO OR GREATER THAN THE TRAILER GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR).” Check the applicable ratings and follow your vehicle and trailer manufacturers’ instructions; do not use a cooler to justify exceeding them.
How to choose a compatible cooler
Once vehicle-specific guidance establishes that additional cooling is needed, compare the application and installation requirements—not marketing claims that one design is best for every tow vehicle.

- Fluid: Verify whether the cooler is designed for engine oil or ATF. A transmission cooler is not a substitute for an engine oil cooler.
- Fitment: Match the vehicle, engine, and transmission. Confirm the cooler, adapter, thermostat if required, hoses, and fittings are suitable for that application.
- Use and conditions: Consider the intended duty and expected operating conditions, including towing load and ambient conditions. Selection guidance from cooler manufacturers identifies vehicle type, transmission type, intended use, and operating conditions as relevant factors.
- Design and installation space: Tube-and-fin, plate-and-fin, and stacked-plate are available cooler designs. Compare available mounting space and airflow, along with the manufacturer’s installation requirements; the design name alone does not establish which will perform best in your vehicle.
- Availability and support: Verify that the exact kit is currently available and check its warranty and included installation provisions. Do not assume that an older catalog listing represents a current product.
What published cooler claims can—and cannot—tell you
TCI Automotive’s 2013 catalog lists a Heavy-Duty Engine Oil Cooler Kit, part 820300, for specified Chevy 301–454 applications with a spin-on filter. The catalog claims a 20° to 30° F oil-temperature drop for that product. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test, and it does not establish a general result or fitment for other vehicles. Current availability was not verified.
That example shows why product-specific fitment and evidence matter: a historical kit listing is not a recommendation for a modern or different vehicle, and a claimed temperature change should not be treated as a guaranteed towing outcome.
