Tour de France All Access was NBC/Versus’s 2011 digital coverage package for following the race on an iPhone and the web. Its iPhone app combined race news, results, rider profiles, video clips, interviews and a Twitter stream; paid access unlocked live video. Contemporary reports describe different prices because they covered different purchase dates and products, so none should be read as a current offer.

What the iPhone app offered

Engadget’s July 15, 2011 roundup described the app as free and listed stage results, rider profiles, video clips, interviews and a Twitter stream. It said viewers needed a $4.99 in-app purchase to watch each Tour stage live. Engadget’s app roundup is specifically about the iPhone app, rather than the full web package.

PCWorld’s July 15, 2011 summary likewise described a free app with an optional upgrade priced at about $5, and mentioned standings, rider following, maps, video and news. That rounded description is consistent with a paid upgrade, but it does not establish that every feature listed was available in every app version or tier. PCWorld’s 2011 overview

How the app fit into the wider All Access package

All Access was broader than a single iPhone app. A June 24, 2011 AllThingsD report described NBC Sports’ web and mobile offering: news, standings, highlights, profiles and maps were available without payment, while live video and GPS tracking were paid features. Trade coverage described the broader offering as a rebrand of Versus Tour Tracker, with live streams, enhanced maps, rider and team tracking, highlights and content partnerships. NBCSports.com coordinating producer Tom Seeley characterized the approach as adding features to the existing audience experience: “We’re not looking to blow things up, but provide more bells and whistles as part of the broader audience we reach.” The quote appeared in Multichannel News/Next TV coverage published June 29, 2011. What it cost in 2011

There was no single price that applies to every description of All Access. Contemporary reports refer to different offers, platforms and purchase windows:

Reported amount What the report says it covered Source and date
$4.99 In-app purchase for live stage viewing; the app itself was described as free. Engadget, July 15, 2011 (report)
$14.99, $9.99 or $6.99 Mobile subscription, priced by when the buyer subscribed: through July 11, during July 12–16, or for the final week, respectively. AllThingsD, June 24, 2011 (report)
$29.95 Full online pass, not the iPhone app. Bicycle Tucson, July 1, 2011 (report)
About $5 Optional app upgrade, rounded in a summary of the free app and its features. PCWorld, July 15, 2011 (report)
$14.99 All Access price in a July roundup; the report mentions live stream, GPS positions, results, standings and interviews, without specifying the same purchase-window breakdown as AllThingsD. Triathlete, July 8, 2011 (report)

These are historical reported prices from 2011, not present-day offers. The different figures are best understood in their stated contexts rather than combined into one app price.

Historical ride-tracking connection

Engadget also reported that the app connected to the Aquaphor Le Tour Challenge, which used Versus and MapMyRide to track users’ rides and compare them with professional riders. This describes a 2011 integration; it does not show that the challenge or its connection to MapMyRide remains available.

Can you still install or use it?

The available contemporary coverage establishes what the 2011 service offered, but not whether the legacy app is still listed in an app store or works on current iPhones. It also does not establish current Tour streaming rights or whether any of the historical partner services remain available. Treat Tour de France All Access as a historical product, not a recommendation for a current iPhone download.
