Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has rooftop solar at Kipling Collegiate Institute, the high school climate scientist and communicator Katharine Hayhoe attended. The Energy Mix reported that Kipling generated 243,946 kWh in 2025. The school is part of a board-wide program that TDSB says began in 2010 and now spans 358 buildings.
Which Toronto school did Katharine Hayhoe attend?
The Energy Mix identified Kipling Collegiate Institute as Hayhoe’s former high school in its October 1, 2026 report on the board’s solar program. The news reached Hayhoe through her father, a science educator and former TDSB science coordinator, via a board technology consultant. Hayhoe wrote: “This week’s good news came to me through a particularly reliable source: my dad!” The Energy Mix’s report attributes the school’s 2025 generation figure to information shared through Hayhoe’s newsletter.
According to that report, Kipling’s panels generated 243,946 kilowatt-hours (kWh) during 2025. This is the figure reported for the school, rather than a board-wide annual total.
How extensive is TDSB’s rooftop solar program?
TDSB says it began investing in rooftop solar in 2010. Its Solar Schools page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists approximately 38 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity across 358 buildings and close to 148,000 panels.

The board credits Potentia Renewable Inc. with installations at 347 buildings and lists one installation by Beach Community Energy Cooperative at Kew Beach Public School. These figures describe the board’s reported installation footprint; they are distinct from estimates of how much electricity or carbon the system produces or avoids.
How does the board connect solar panels to student learning?
TDSB presents the installations as an educational resource as well as school infrastructure. Its Solar Schools page lets students check how much energy their school generates and calculate a carbon impact. Students can also customize and download a “We Are a Solar School” poster to share with their community.

Why do TDSB sources give different carbon-offset figures?
The board’s published figures do not give one consistent annual emissions estimate. TDSB’s Solar Schools page says the arrays offset about 8,000 tonnes of CO2 each year. Its 2024–25 Climate Action Plan gives about 114 tonnes of annual CO2 offset. Meanwhile, the board’s solar-generation calculator estimates 20,529 tonnes of annual CO2e reduction.
The calculator’s number is a model, not a meter reading: it uses 38,357 kW of capacity, a 0.75 derate factor, 5.7 sun-hours per day, and a 2024 marginal emissions factor of 343 grams of CO2e per kWh. The calculator also estimates annual generation at about 59.85 million kWh, while the Climate Action Plan lists about 40.6 million kWh. The available board materials do not explain how these generation and emissions figures relate or reconcile the offset estimates. They should therefore be read as separate figures with different sources and methods, not combined into a single definitive annual offset claim.
