No. Tor Browser is not available for iPhone. The Tor Project’s installation guidance states that there is no Tor Browser for iOS and recommends Onion Browser instead. Onion Browser is a separate, open-source iOS app that routes its own traffic through Tor, but it does not offer the same privacy protections as Tor Browser on desktop or Android. If you need Tor Browser specifically, you will need a supported platform other than iPhone.
Is there an official Tor Browser for iOS?
As of early October 2026, no. The Tor Project’s installation and platform availability page (Tor Project Support, “How to install Tor Browser and platform availability,” checked October 7, 2026) lists the platforms where Tor Browser is offered and says there is no iOS version. Searches for “Tor Browser iPhone” or “Tor Browser for iOS” often return third-party apps and older articles, so it is worth confirming against that page before installing anything.

The same page names Onion Browser as the iOS option to use. In the Tor Project’s words: “We recommend an iOS app called Onion Browser, which is open source, uses Tor routing, and is developed by someone who works closely with the Tor Project.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Onion Browser and Tor Browser both aim to browse through the Tor network, but they are different products with different protections. The table below uses only the points the sources establish.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
| Point of comparison | Tor Browser | Onion Browser |
|---|---|---|
| Availability on iPhone | Not available (Tor Project installation page, October 2026) | Available as an iPhone and iPad app on the App Store |
| Recommended by the Tor Project for iOS | No iOS version exists | Yes, named as the recommended iOS app |
| Privacy protections compared with Tor Browser | Baseline the Tor Project compares against | Not the same, according to the Tor Project |
| Scope of Tor routing | Browser-wide | Limited to traffic handled inside Onion Browser |
| Snowflake support on iOS | Not stated for iOS, because no iOS version exists | Supported, per the Tor Project’s Snowflake guidance |
The practical takeaway is that Onion Browser gives an iPhone user a Tor-routed browser, but not a like-for-like copy of Tor Browser.
Why Onion Browser cannot match Tor Browser on iPhone
The Tor Project attributes the gap to Apple’s browser-engine rules. Its guidance explains that these rules keep Onion Browser from having the same privacy protections as Tor Browser. Apple requires iPhone browsers to use WebKit, the engine Safari uses, and Tor Browser’s protections rely on a browser build the Tor Project controls.

There is one documented exception, and it is narrower than many readers assume. Apple’s developer documentation (“Using alternative browser engines in the European Union”) says that iOS and iPadOS allow apps to use browser engines other than WebKit for dedicated browser apps and in-app browsing experiences in the EU. Apple’s own wording says this applies to authorized apps for EU users on iOS 17.4 or later, subject to eligibility and continuing privacy and security requirements.
Three points follow from that:
- The exception is geographic. Outside the EU, the WebKit requirement applies without this exception.
- The exception depends on Apple authorizing an app. Nothing in the sources establishes that Onion Browser holds that authorization or uses an alternative engine.
- Even where it applies, it does not mean Tor Browser has launched on iPhone.
If you are in the EU and read about alternative engines, treat it as a change in what Apple permits for certain apps, not as a sign that an official Tor Browser is coming to iPhone.

What Tor routing covers inside Onion Browser
Onion Browser’s project describes its Tor routing as confined to the app. It says traffic is tunneled within Onion Browser, and it warns of three things that matter for real use:
- Some iOS traffic, including audio or video embedded in pages, may use your normal connection instead of Tor.
- Logging in to a site you use outside Tor can let that site associate your activity with your identity, regardless of how the browser routes traffic.
- Other apps on the phone are not covered by Onion Browser’s routing. Use Onion Browser for the browsing you want routed, and do not assume the whole device is protected.
These limits are why the Tor Project’s comparison with Tor Browser matters. Tor routing is one protection among several, and on iPhone the browser cannot offer the full set that Tor Browser provides.

Why a regular iPhone browser is not a substitute
The Tor Project advises against sending Tor traffic through ordinary browsers. Those browsers are not designed with Tor Browser’s protections, and they can expose identifying details through DNS or WebRTC leaks, browser fingerprinting, cookies, or the cache. Safari, Chrome, and similar apps should not be configured to act as a Tor client.

If Tor is blocked on your network
The Tor Project’s Snowflake guidance says Snowflake can be used with Onion Browser on iOS. Snowflake is a pluggable transport intended to help people reach Tor where direct connections are blocked. It may help with access on restrictive networks, but it does not guarantee that a connection will work or that the browsing is anonymous. Use the Snowflake option in Onion Browser’s settings, and expect performance to vary.
Choosing a path
- You want Tor Browser specifically: use a supported platform such as Android, Windows, macOS, or Linux. Tor Browser is not available for iPhone.
- You are on iPhone and want Tor-routed browsing: use Onion Browser from the App Store, and confirm it is the app named in the Tor Project’s installation guidance.
- You are on iPhone and Tor is blocked: enable Snowflake in Onion Browser, as described in the Tor Project’s Snowflake guidance.
- You want the whole phone routed through Tor: Onion Browser does not do this. Its routing is limited to the app.
Neither option is universally safer for every threat model. Choose based on what you need to protect, which sites you will log in to, and whether your traffic must be routed through Tor at all.
Verifying the app before you install
- Open the Tor Project’s installation and platform availability page and locate the Onion Browser recommendation.
- Search the App Store for “Onion Browser” and confirm the listing is for an iPhone and iPad app.
- Check that the listing is the app the Tor Project names, and avoid unrelated apps with similar names.
The App Store listing identifies Onion Browser as an iPhone and iPad app. Apple’s developer documentation and the Tor Project page are the sources to check if policies change.
