Start with programming foundations if you are new to coding, then choose a browser-testing, API-testing, or test-design course that fits your goal. TAU currently advertises free online courses; its older “top courses” list is a useful historical popularity snapshot, not a current ranking.
How to choose a TAU course
Choose by learning objective and prerequisites, rather than treating a popularity list as a quality ranking. The relevant questions are what you already know, what kind of software you want to test, and which tools your team or target role uses.
- New to programming: Build basic coding fluency in a language relevant to your target stack.
- Browser UI testing: Pick a framework course—Cypress, Selenium, or Playwright—based on the tools you need to use.
- API testing: Start with a course that introduces service APIs or take a tool-oriented Postman route.
- Test design: Study automation principles and locator strategies alongside framework syntax.
TAU’s homepage describes its courses as free and advertises videos, transcripts, quizzes, credits, ranks, badges, and certificates. Its headline, “Become a test automation superstar – Free!”, is promotional wording, not a guarantee of a particular learning or employment outcome. Check the TAU homepage and course catalog for current course availability.
Recommended course paths by goal
If you are new to programming
Start with one language course: Introduction to JavaScript, Java Programming, or Python Programming. Choose JavaScript if it fits the web-testing tools you plan to use; choose Java or Python if those match your existing work or target environment. Avoid trying to learn several languages at once before you can write and debug basic code.

If you want to automate browser tests
TAU’s historical selections include Introduction to Cypress and Selenium WebDriver with Java. Applitools’ separate editorial list highlights Playwright with JavaScript. These are different routes, not evidence that one framework is best for everyone. Match the course to your team’s stack, project requirements, and the framework you expect to maintain.

If you want to test APIs
Exploring Service APIs through Test Automation is a useful introductory direction for understanding API testing. API Test Automation with Postman offers a tool-oriented route. Decide whether you first need the concepts of service testing or practice with a particular tool; then check the catalog to confirm the course is available.
If you want stronger automation foundations
Setting a Foundation for Successful Test Automation addresses strategy and design principles, while Web Element Locator Strategies focuses on choosing ways to identify elements in web interfaces. These topics can complement a framework course: knowing syntax is not the same as designing maintainable tests or robust locators.

What the “top courses” ranking can—and cannot—tell you
Applitools’ article “The Top 10 Test Automation University Courses”, published January 5, 2023, ranked courses by total completions during the preceding year. That makes it a dated indicator of historical platform engagement. It is not a 2026 ranking, an independent course-quality evaluation, or evidence of job outcomes; the article does not publish course completion counts.
The article’s introduction reported nearly 140,000 students signed up as of November 2022. That is a historical figure, not a current enrollment count. The TAU homepage separately uses “150K software engineers” in an enrollment invitation, without establishing that as a dated or independently audited statistic.

Applitools also published a separate seven-course editorial selection on January 5, 2023. It can surface options to investigate, but it is also publisher-produced editorial guidance rather than an independent comparison. Use the official course catalog to verify present availability before planning around a named course. The TAU instructor directory can help confirm instructor identity and subject area.

- Choose one programming language. Take the matching introductory course if you cannot yet read and write basic code comfortably.
- Learn testing fundamentals. Add a strategy or locator course so you understand why tests are structured a certain way, not just how to call a framework API.
- Pick one target: browser UI automation or API testing. Select the course that matches the tools used in your project or the skills you want to practice.
- Build a small portfolio example. Create a few focused tests against an application you are allowed to use, include setup instructions and explain what each test checks. Do not publish credentials, private data, or tests that burden a site without permission.
- Extend only when useful. After an introductory Playwright course, for example, consider Advanced Playwright if you have the framework basics. For another framework, deepen your skills in the one you chose before switching tools.
A course certificate or badge can document course completion, but it does not by itself demonstrate practical test-design ability. A small, readable project that shows how you select cases, manage test data, and interpret failures gives a clearer example of your work.
