Cypress brings browser-based end-to-end and component testing, HTTP checks, network control, automatic waiting, debugging tools, and optional Cypress Cloud workflows into one testing platform. The best feature depends on what you need to prove: a component renders and responds correctly, an API handles a request, or a complete user journey works across the application and backend.

What can Cypress test?

Cypress supports several complementary kinds of testing. Choose a test scope that matches the risk you want to catch rather than expecting one test type to cover every layer.

Test type What it exercises Useful for What it does not establish on its own
End-to-end (E2E) An application workflow in a real browser, typically involving the application and backend together. Authentication, purchasing, cross-page persistence, and deployment smoke checks. It does not isolate the cause of every failure; setup and maintenance can be more involved than focused tests.
Component A component mounted directly in a real browser. Rendering, interaction, styles, and component behavior without setting up a whole user journey. It does not validate the complete application-to-backend journey.
API HTTP requests and their responses. CRUD behavior, error responses, permission boundaries, authentication setup, data seeding, and GraphQL response shape. It does not prove that browser UI behavior or a user journey works.
Accessibility Known accessibility rules and explicit assertions added to functional tests. Scanning critical flows such as signup and checkout, checking labels and accessible names, and testing keyboard and focus behavior. An automated scan cannot certify that an interface is fully accessible.

Accessibility is a layer to add to functional testing, not a mutually exclusive test type. Cypress’s testing-types guide describes the available scopes and examples: Cypress testing types.

When should you use end-to-end testing?

Use E2E tests when the behavior that matters crosses application boundaries or depends on a realistic user flow. A login test, for example, can exercise the browser interaction and the application’s connection to its backend; a checkout test can cover navigation and persistence across pages.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This realism comes with setup and maintenance costs. E2E tests usually need a test environment and suitable data, and a failure may involve the browser, application, backend, or test itself. Keep them focused on important journeys and use component and API checks for narrower questions.

When is component testing the better fit?

Cypress Component Testing mounts a component directly in a real browser instead of relying on a simulated DOM. That makes it useful for checking browser rendering, styles, and interactions while keeping the test’s setup focused on the component.

The Cypress guide lists official mounting libraries for React, Angular, Vue, and Svelte. It also describes automatic waiting, Time Travel, browser DevTools, spies and stubs, network interception, and clock control as part of the component-testing workflow. Teams can use the same Cypress project for component and E2E suites. Framework support and setup details are documented in the Component Testing guide.

How do Cypress API tests fit in?

Cypress can issue HTTP requests and assert on their responses. Use API tests to check CRUD lifecycles, error handling, access boundaries, or response shape; they can also help prepare authentication or seed data for other tests.

API tests are a complement to browser tests. A passing API check does not show that a button, form, or navigation flow works in the UI. Conversely, an E2E test may be a less direct way to isolate a response-contract problem.

How do automatic waiting and test retries differ?

Retry-ability for queries and assertions

Cypress links queries and assertions and retries them while the application changes, up to the applicable timeout. This helps with dynamic pages where an element or expected state is not available immediately. It is not the same as adding arbitrary delays: prefer a query and assertion that describe the state the test needs.

Retries for failed tests

Test retries rerun a test after it fails; they are disabled by default. The Cypress guide illustrates retries: 2, which permits up to two additional attempts after the first run. A later passing attempt can make a run easier to diagnose, but it still signals instability to investigate rather than proving the test is sound. See Cypress test retries.

How should you use network interception and stubs?

cy.intercept() can observe requests, wait for them, assert on request or response properties, and control a stubbed response’s body, status, headers, or delay.

Use real responses for paths where the contract matters

A real response exercises the client-to-server path and is appropriate for critical happy paths. Cypress’s network guide says that requests which are not stubbed validate the client-server contract; that assumes the test reaches the intended server response. These tests generally need a real server and seeded data and can take more setup and time.

Use stubs for controlled edge cases

Stubs make it easier to test cases such as an error status or unusual response without changing the server. They can provide fast, controlled feedback, but they do not exercise the real endpoint and mock data can drift from production behavior. Cypress recommends combining real responses and stubs according to purpose, often keeping real responses for critical paths and stubbing other cases. The vendor documentation’s statement that stubbed responses are typically returned in less than 20 ms is not an independently described benchmark, so it should not be treated as a performance guarantee. Details are in Intercepting network requests.

What debugging features help diagnose failures?

Cypress documents a visual command log, snapshots, readable errors and stack traces, and access to browser DevTools while tests run. Together, these let you inspect command-by-command state and investigate application behavior as well as test logic. They support diagnosis; they do not guarantee that every failure will be obvious.

For team workflows, Cypress Cloud documents recorded-run features including Test Replay, parallelization, spec prioritization, Auto Cancellation, integrations, analytics, and UI Coverage. Cloud and premium capabilities may depend on plan, so check current packaging rather than assuming a particular feature is included. The feature overview is at Cypress features; current plan scope is at Cypress pricing.

How can Cypress support accessibility testing?

You can add accessibility checks to Cypress workflows with community plugins such as cypress-axe, Cypress assertions, or the paid Cypress Accessibility Cloud product. A practical approach is to scan high-impact flows, assert that labels and accessible names meet expectations, and add keyboard and focus checks where relevant.

Scanners detect violations of known rules; they cannot establish that every user can access the interface. Manual review remains necessary. Cypress’s guide outlines this layered approach at Accessibility testing.

How to choose which Cypress features to use

  • Match scope to the question: component checks for isolated browser behavior, API tests for HTTP behavior, and E2E tests for complete user journeys.
  • Choose realism deliberately: use real server responses where the client-server contract is important and controlled stubs for cases that are difficult or costly to produce on a real service.
  • Balance feedback speed and setup: focused component and API tests can avoid the infrastructure of a full browser journey; retain E2E checks for risks that only appear across the workflow.
  • Use retries as a diagnostic aid: query/assertion retry-ability handles changing UI state; failed-test retries expose intermittent failures but do not repair them.
  • Layer accessibility confidence: combine known-rule scans with explicit assertions, keyboard and focus testing, and manual review.
  • Check team needs and plan scope: Cypress App supports local and CI execution in Firefox and Chrome-family browsers, including Edge, according to the feature overview. Cypress Cloud adds team and recorded-run capabilities, some of which are plan-dependent.

Or skip the browser setup

Cypress is for testing application behavior; if the immediate task is to capture a website as an image or PDF, a screenshot API can avoid setting up a browser script. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, and its parameter names support those used by other screenshot APIs.

For example, cURL can save a WebP screenshot of a page:

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Cypress test in a real browser?

Yes. Cypress E2E tests run browser workflows, and Component Testing mounts components directly in a real browser.

Do Cypress retries make a flaky test reliable?

No. A retry can reveal intermittent behavior, but a test that passes only on a later attempt still merits investigation.

Can accessibility scans prove a site is accessible?

No. Automated scans cover known rules; manual review and appropriate interaction testing are still needed.
