The seven patterns below are practical, documented uses—not a speed or reliability ranking. Your results still depend on the target application, browser version, selectors, authentication, network, and execution environment.
Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, and Cypress cover different jobs. Choose by the browser engines, test model, artifacts, and debugging workflow you need rather than by a claim that one tool always wins.
What “headless” means
In headless mode, the browser engine loads pages and executes JavaScript without a visible desktop window. The same mode can drive tests, collect data, click controls, render screenshots, or print PDFs. Headless is an operating mode, not a framework: Playwright, Puppeteer, Selenium, and Cypress expose different APIs and workflows.
For reproducible results, pin your framework and browser versions, set an explicit viewport and timezone when visual output matters, wait for a meaningful page condition instead of an arbitrary delay, and save logs, traces, screenshots, or PDFs when a run fails.

1. Cross-browser end-to-end checks with Playwright
Playwright provides one API for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit and includes a test runner with auto-waiting, assertions, traces, and parallel execution. That combination is a documented fit for teams that want one end-to-end workflow across browser engines.
Minimal test
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('checkout page is usable', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com/checkout', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByRole('textbox', { name: 'Email' }).fill('qa@example.com');
await expect(page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Continue' })).toBeVisible();
});
Use role- and label-based locators where possible. They describe user-visible behavior and are generally less brittle than long CSS paths. Traces can preserve the action timeline, DOM snapshots, and screenshots for a failed test.
Browser binaries are part of the setup
Playwright documents that each version needs specific browser binaries. After upgrading the package, install the matching browsers again when required:
npx playwright install
In CI, cache those binaries only when the cache key includes the Playwright version; otherwise a stale executable can produce confusing launch or rendering failures. See the Playwright browser-management documentation and the Playwright overview.
2. JavaScript browser scripts with Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a high-level JavaScript API for controlling Chrome and Firefox through CDP and WebDriver BiDi. It is a practical choice for scripts that navigate pages, interact with controls, gather artifacts, or inspect browser behavior.
Runnable navigation script
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0', timeout: 60000 });
const title = await page.title();
console.log(title);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Use a bounded timeout and always close the browser in a finally block. For pages that never become network-idle because of analytics or live connections, wait for a specific selector instead.

When a script is not a test
A one-off workflow can be simpler than a test runner: open a page, fill a form, extract text, and write an artifact. Add explicit checks for authentication state, expected headings, and HTTP or application errors so a script does not silently save an error page.
See the Chrome for Developers Puppeteer documentation for the supported automation and capture use cases.
3. WebDriver-based application testing with Selenium
Selenium is an open-source suite for automating web application testing and supports the W3C WebDriver standard. It is a credible fit for teams already invested in its protocol and language-binding ecosystem. The supplied material does not establish an exhaustive, current browser or language matrix, so verify the combinations you intend to run in the Selenium documentation.
Headless Chrome example in Python
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
options = Options()
options.add_argument('--headless=new')
options.add_argument('--window-size=1440,900')
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get('https://example.com')
heading = driver.find_element(By.TAG_NAME, 'h1').text
print(heading)
finally:
driver.quit()
WebDriver adds a protocol boundary between your code and the browser driver. Keep the browser and driver versions compatible, use stable locators, and collect the driver log when a session fails to start.
4. Headless end-to-end runs with Cypress
Cypress states: “When running cypress run from the CLI, Cypress launches browsers headlessly by default.” Its browser documentation lists Chrome-family browsers and Firefox; WebKit is documented as experimental, so do not treat it as equivalent to the stable browser options without checking the current matrix.
Run a spec in CI
npx cypress run --browser chrome --spec cypress/e2e/login.cy.js
A basic spec might look like this:
describe('login', () => {
it('shows the account page', () => {
cy.visit('/login');
cy.get('input[name="email"]').type('qa@example.com');
cy.get('input[name="password"]').type(Cypress.env('PASSWORD'));
cy.contains('button', 'Sign in').click();
cy.contains('h1', 'Account').should('be.visible');
});
});
Store secrets in the CI secret manager or Cypress environment configuration, not in the spec. Use the command-line run for repeatable headless execution and preserve Cypress screenshots or videos when configured for failure analysis. Read the Cypress browser-launch documentation for current browser support.

5. Automated screenshots with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s official overview names screenshots as a browser-automation use case. A deterministic capture needs more than page.screenshot(): set the viewport, wait for the content that matters, and decide whether the image should include the full page.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 800, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded', timeout: 60000 });
await page.locator('main').wait();
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Full-page images can be very tall, and lazy-loaded content may not appear unless you scroll or trigger the application’s loading logic. Pixel output can differ across machines because of browser versions, fonts, device scale, animations, and network responses. Freeze those inputs before using screenshots for visual comparisons.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or a PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
For a direct call, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Free accounts include 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
6. Generate PDFs from rendered pages
Puppeteer also documents PDF generation. Use print CSS and explicit page settings so a document does not depend on a developer laptop’s defaults.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com/invoice/123', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0', timeout: 60000 });
await page.emulateMediaType('print');
await page.pdf({
path: 'invoice.pdf',
format: 'A4',
printBackground: true,
margin: { top: '16mm', right: '16mm', bottom: '16mm', left: '16mm' }
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
Output depends on the page’s print styles, fonts, images, paper size, margins, orientation, and page-break rules. Validate generated PDFs with representative long and short documents instead of assuming screen layout will print correctly.

7. Browser workflows for AI agents with Playwright
Playwright’s home page describes browser automation for AI agents and offers CLI and MCP capabilities. In this pattern, an agent calls browser actions such as navigation, locating an element, and clicking it through a controlled browser session.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the agent bounded
- Allow-list domains and isolate credentials.
- Require confirmation before destructive actions, purchases, or account changes.
- Set action, navigation, and total-run timeouts.
- Record a trace or screenshot after important milestones.
- Assert the resulting state; an agent reaching a page is not proof that the intended task succeeded.
The documentation establishes a browser-control building block, not autonomous correctness for a particular website. DOM changes, consent dialogs, authentication challenges, and ambiguous instructions can still require deterministic code or human review.
Which headless browser automation tool should you use?
| Pattern | Documented fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-browser end-to-end tests | Playwright | Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit are documented; install matching browser binaries. |
| JavaScript page scripts | Puppeteer | Chrome and Firefox automation through CDP and WebDriver BiDi. |
| WebDriver application tests | Selenium | Best aligned with teams using the W3C WebDriver protocol and its bindings. |
| CLI headless end-to-end runs | Cypress | Chrome-family browsers and Firefox are documented; WebKit is experimental. |
| Managed screenshot API | ScreenshotNeo | Clean shots, only clean shots billed, and a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots. |
Playwright is the clearest documented starting point when one test suite must cover multiple engines and needs traces, assertions, auto-waiting, and parallel execution. Puppeteer is a natural fit for JavaScript automation and capture artifacts. Selenium suits an established WebDriver stack. Cypress is useful when its runner and browser model match your team, with the WebKit qualification kept in view. ScreenshotNeo is preferable when you want an API or MCP server instead of maintaining browser binaries and page-cleanup code.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to run headless automation in CI
- Pin the framework, browser version, and operating-system image.
- Install the required browser binaries during the build; for Playwright, run
npx playwright installas appropriate. - Provide secrets through the CI secret store and use a dedicated test account with least privilege.
- Set explicit viewport, locale, timezone, and timeout values when they affect the result.
- Wait for selectors or application state, not a single arbitrary sleep.
- Save failure artifacts: traces, console logs, screenshots, videos, HTML, or PDFs.
- Retry only known transient failures. A retry can hide a real race condition if every failure is treated as infrastructure noise.
Troubleshooting common failures
Browser does not launch
Check that the browser binary is installed and compatible with the framework version. In containers, verify required system libraries and use the framework’s documented installation method. For Selenium, check browser-driver compatibility and read the driver log.
“Element not found” or flaky clicks
The page may still be rendering, the locator may be unstable, or a consent dialog may cover the control. Wait for a meaningful selector, prefer accessible roles or labels, and capture a screenshot or trace at the failure point.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Navigation times out
Inspect DNS, proxy, authentication, and the target’s long-lived requests. Replace an unsuitable network-idle condition with a specific readiness selector, while keeping a finite timeout.

Screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm that the URL loaded successfully, wait for the visible content, trigger lazy loading when needed, and disable animations for visual comparisons. Check viewport, device scale, fonts, and page background settings.
PDF layout is wrong
Emulate print media, verify print CSS, set paper size and margins explicitly, and test page-break behavior with realistic content. Missing fonts or images can change pagination.
AI agent takes the wrong action
Reduce the allowed domain and tool set, add explicit state assertions, require confirmation for irreversible actions, and retain a trace. Browser-control capability does not guarantee that an agent interpreted the task correctly.

Cost, performance, and reliability decisions
Self-hosted frameworks give you control over browser versions, concurrency, network access, and artifacts, but you must maintain those dependencies and isolate sessions. Managed capture removes that browser-operations burden. ScreenshotNeo offers 63 options, including full-page lazy-image loading, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and compatibility with parameter names used by other screenshot APIs.
For any framework, concurrency increases CPU, memory, and target-site load. Reuse a browser process where safe, isolate contexts and credentials, cap parallel workers, and respect the target’s terms and rate limits. No capability list proves a particular speed or success rate on your site; measure your own workflow with controlled pages and representative failures.
FAQ
Does headless mean the browser is not real?
No. It is a browser execution mode without a visible window. Rendering and automation behavior still depend on the browser engine and environment.
Can I switch from a headed run to headless for debugging?
Yes. Keep the same test and change the launch mode; use traces, screenshots, logs, or a headed session when you need to observe an interaction.
Are these seven tools ranked by benchmark?
No. They are seven practical patterns supported by official documentation, not independently measured rankings.
Is WebKit stable in Cypress?
Cypress documents WebKit as experimental. Check its current browser-support page before making it a required CI target.
