The most common API authentication mistakes are confusing authentication with authorization, using the wrong identity protocol or OAuth flow, trusting tokens without validating them, exposing credentials, and assuming a valid token grants access to every resource. Avoid them by choosing credentials for the identity they represent, validating each token for its intended use, and checking permissions for every operation.

1. Treating API keys or OAuth as proof of user identity

Authentication establishes who or what is presenting a credential; authorization decides whether that identity may perform a particular action. An API key typically identifies an API client, not the end user behind it. OWASP advises against using API keys for user authentication and cautions that OAuth is an authorization framework, not an authentication protocol. OWASP API Security

Use OpenID Connect (OIDC) when a client needs to verify an end user’s identity. Use OAuth to grant delegated access to an API. In either case, a credential establishes only the identity or authority defined by its protocol; the API must still authorize the requested action on the requested resource.

How to avoid it

  • Define whether each credential represents a user, a client application, or delegated access.
  • Use OIDC for end-user identity and OAuth for delegated API access.
  • Do not rely only on API keys to protect sensitive or high-value resources; independently authorize each requested operation.

2. Using an outdated or unsuitable OAuth flow

For OAuth clients, OWASP recommends Authorization Code with Proof Key for Code Exchange (PKCE), including for single-page and native applications. The Implicit Grant is deprecated under RFC 9700, and the Resource Owner Password Credentials grant should be avoided because it exposes users’ passwords to the client. OWASP OAuth2 Cheat Sheet

PKCE binds an authorization-code exchange to a transaction-specific challenge, helping prevent an intercepted code from being used by another party. It does not protect an access token after issuance. Token storage, transmission, lifetime, and replay protection still need to match the threat model. OWASP identifies sender-constrained approaches such as DPoP or mutual TLS as options when token interception is a concern.

How to avoid it

  1. Use Authorization Code with PKCE for the client flow.
  2. Bind the transaction-specific challenge to the authorization request and code exchange.
  3. Protect issued tokens separately; assess whether sender-constraining is appropriate for the deployment.

3. Accepting a token without checking its integrity, claims, or purpose

A JSON Web Token (JWT) is not trustworthy just because it parses or has a familiar structure. OWASP highlights unsecured alg: none tokens, algorithm or key-type confusion, and confusion between tokens meant for different purposes. Validate the signature using an explicitly allowed algorithm, then check the issuer, audience, expiration, and intended token type or profile as applicable. OWASP JSON Web Token Cheat Sheet for Java

Do not accept an OpenID Connect ID token as an API access token: the two token types serve different purposes. For bearer access tokens, possession is enough to use the token, so restrict its audience to the intended resource server. Shorter access-token lifetimes, refresh-token rotation, or sender-constraining can reduce exposure if a token leaks. OWASP OAuth2 Cheat Sheet

How to avoid it

  • Use a maintained, standards-based library and explicitly configure its validation requirements.
  • Keep validation rules distinct for ID tokens, access tokens, and other JWT profiles.
  • Reject tokens with invalid signatures, unapproved algorithms, the wrong issuer or audience, expired validity, or the wrong type.
  • Test malformed, unsigned, and wrongly typed tokens rather than assuming a parser’s acceptance means a token is valid.

4. Leaking credentials or leaving login and recovery flows exposed

Passwords and tokens placed in URLs may be captured in server logs. Keep them out of URLs, transmit credentials in appropriate request headers or bodies over TLS, and prevent sensitive values from being recorded in logs. OWASP also calls for protections against credential stuffing and brute force, with safeguards for authentication and forgotten-password flows that are stricter than ordinary API rate limiting. Weak password storage, weak cryptographic keys, and predictable tokens can undermine otherwise sound authentication. Sensitive account changes also warrant reauthentication so that an existing session alone is not treated as sufficient proof of identity. OWASP Authentication Cheat Sheet

How to avoid it

  • Use TLS and keep credentials out of URLs, application logs, and other exposed records.
  • Apply throttling and abuse controls to login and account-recovery endpoints.
  • Use an appropriate password-hashing approach, protect cryptographic keys, and generate unpredictable tokens.
  • Require users to reauthenticate before important account changes.

5. Assuming authentication alone enforces authorization

A valid token does not automatically grant access to every endpoint or object. OWASP recommends restricting access tokens to intended resources and actions, and having each resource server check that the token is meant for the requested resource and action. Authorization should also account for object-level ownership and required roles or scopes. OWASP API Security

How to avoid it

  • Create an operation-by-operation authorization matrix that covers resource ownership, roles, and scopes.
  • Check permissions for every request, including both reads and writes; do not rely on a broad login check or a hidden interface control.
  • Return the API’s documented denial response consistently.
  • Ensure malformed token input results in an authentication failure, not a server error.

How to test an API’s authentication and authorization

Test each operation, not just the login endpoint. OWASP’s REST assessment guidance calls for trying operations without credentials, with a valid token, and with a valid token that lacks the required scope or role. OWASP Web Security Testing Guide: Session Management Testing

  • For every operation, try no credentials, valid credentials, and credentials with insufficient scope or role.
  • Alter claims and try an invalid signature, an unsecured token, and algorithm-confusion cases; verify they are rejected.
  • Try expired, not-yet-valid, wrong-issuer, and wrong-audience tokens.
  • Send malformed or truncated tokens and confirm the API returns an authentication failure rather than a server error.
  • Check that credentials and tokens do not appear in URLs or logs, and test rate limits on login and recovery paths.

These distinctions matter because API authentication failures can let attackers compromise tokens or exploit implementation flaws to assume another user’s identity. OWASP classifies broken authentication as API2:2023 in its API Security Top 10 (2023).
