Statistical modeling is used to answer specific questions about data and the real processes that produce it. A model is a simplified representation—not a perfect copy—of a more complex system. Depending on its design, it can help describe relationships, estimate populations or current conditions, quantify uncertainty, forecast outcomes, compare hypothetical scenarios, or improve the way data is collected.

The 20 examples below are representative, not a definitive ranking. Their common test is whether the method, data, assumptions, and time horizon fit the decision at hand.

What questions can statistical models answer?

Different modeling tasks can sound alike but serve different purposes. Describing an observed relationship is not the same as showing that one factor caused another; forecasting a likely near-term outcome is not the same as asking what might happen under a hypothetical policy. The question should determine the model, rather than the model being treated as a general-purpose answer machine.

Purpose Question it can address How to interpret it
Description What patterns or relationships appear in the data? A summary of the data and model assumptions; by itself, it does not establish causation.
Estimation and inference What is the likely value for a population, place, group, or present condition? An estimate based on available observations and assumptions, with uncertainty that should be reported.
Forecasting What outcome is plausible over a defined upcoming period? A forecast for a stated horizon that can be compared with subsequently observed outcomes.
Scenario analysis What could happen if specified conditions or choices changed? A conditional “if … then” projection, not a promise that the scenario will occur.
Study or process design How should data be collected, checked, or analyzed to support a decision? A way to improve the design or use of evidence before or during analysis.

CDC’s Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (CFA) handbook describes a model as “a simplified representation of a more complex system or process.” That simplification matters: the answer is bounded by the data available and by the choices and assumptions built into the model.

Uses in surveys, population estimates, and data quality

Statistical modeling is useful before a dataset is complete as well as after it has been collected. The U.S. Census Bureau describes applications spanning survey methods, population estimates, experimental research, and editing economic data.

1. Designing surveys and censuses

Models can help plan a study, assess questionnaire and field procedures, and estimate how many observations a design needs to answer its intended questions. A sample-size estimate is meaningful only in relation to the target population, expected variation, study design, and precision the study needs; it is not a universal number to reuse unchanged.

2. Inferring from a sample to a population

A survey observes a sample, while decision-makers often want to know about a larger population. Statistical methods use the sample and its design to make qualified population inferences, with uncertainty reflecting the sampling process and other data limitations. The result is an estimate, not a direct measurement of every member of that population.

3. Estimating small areas or subgroups

When a direct sample is too sparse to support a reliable local or subgroup estimate, small-area estimation can combine the available observations with auxiliary information. Mixed-effects and related models are among the approaches used. The added information can make estimates more useful, but the result depends on how well the model and auxiliary data represent the particular place or group.

4. Working with missing or observational data

Models can extract information from incomplete records or data gathered without assigning people to conditions. They can help account for patterns in what is missing or observed, but they cannot automatically remove bias or recover information that the data do not support. Observational associations also do not, on their own, demonstrate cause and effect.

5. Finding unusual records in official economic statistics

Multivariate models can flag economic records that look inconsistent or unusual across several measurements so that they can be reviewed. They can also help improve estimates derived from survey data. A flagged record is a candidate for investigation, not proof that it is erroneous.

6. Managing survey response and field operations

Models can study factors associated with response rates, estimate how many responses may arrive over time, and compare alternative contact strategies. Forecasts of incoming responses can help operations teams plan workloads, while their uncertainty should be considered when staffing or scheduling decisions are made.

7. Using new data sources in official statistics

Machine-learning methods can classify or extract information from sources such as retail scanner records, satellite imagery, and unstructured documents. Statistics Canada has described examples including crop identification from imagery and extracting financial information from reports. Machine learning is one family of modeling approaches, not a synonym for all statistical modeling; the U.S. Census Bureau’s research spans both classical statistical and machine-learning methods.

Uses for geography, time, and changing conditions

Some modeling questions are defined by where something happens; others by when. In either case, the coverage, timing, and quality of observations constrain what can be estimated.

8. Mapping spatial patterns

Spatial models represent relationships among locations and geographic patterns. They can support mapping and analysis in public health, urban and regional planning, or environmental work—for example, examining how an outcome varies across places rather than treating all observations as if location did not matter.

9. Describing time trends and seasonal patterns

Time-series methods can distinguish recurring patterns from broader changes over time. Seasonal adjustment is one application: it helps separate a regular seasonal movement from other changes in a series, making comparisons across periods more informative.

10. Estimating the present when reports arrive late

Nowcasting adjusts estimates of current conditions when observations are delayed. In disease surveillance, the latest reported counts may appear to fall simply because recent cases have not yet been fully reported. CDC/CFA explains that nowcasting can account for reporting delays and improve situational awareness; it estimates the present rather than predicting a distant future.

11. Assessing whether disease transmission is rising or falling

Measures such as the time-varying reproduction number can help assess whether infections are increasing or declining. They are model-based indicators of transmission trends, and should be interpreted alongside the underlying data and other evidence rather than treated as a complete account of an outbreak.

Uses in public-health decisions

Public-health models can inform planning, but their usefulness depends on matching the model to the decision horizon. CDC/CFA’s March 10, 2026 guidance distinguishes estimates of current conditions, near-term forecasts, and longer-term conditional scenarios.

Modeling task Time focus Example and interpretation
Nowcasting Current conditions, adjusted for reporting delay Estimate what is happening now when recent disease reports are incomplete.
Short-term forecast Near future Estimate outcomes such as hospitalizations over the next one to four weeks in CDC infectious-disease guidance; this timeframe describes that guidance, not all statistical forecasts.
Longer-term scenario Conditional future Compare what could happen under stated assumptions about behavior, interventions, vaccination, or new variants.

12. Forecasting near-term public-health demand

Short-term forecasts estimate outcomes such as hospitalizations and can help organizations plan response capacity. CDC/CFA describes infectious-disease forecasts that typically cover one to four weeks. Forecasts should be evaluated against outcomes observed after they are made; the forecast horizon and the outcome being measured need to be clear.

  • 3x faster performance: A powerful processor delivers quicker calculations and smoother graphing
  • Bigger, clearer graphs: 50% more graphing space makes it easier to see patterns and relationships

13. Comparing longer-term outbreak scenarios

Scenario models explore conditional futures—for example, how projections might differ if behavior, vaccination, interventions, or circulating variants changed. They answer “what if?” rather than identify one guaranteed future. CDC/CFA’s handbook contrasts the question “how many COVID-19 hospitalizations will there be in two weeks?” with “will there be more COVID-19 hospitalizations this winter compared to last?” The questions imply different time horizons and kinds of analysis.

14. Evaluating possible interventions

Models can examine whether isolation, quarantine, testing, vaccination, or other interventions might reduce transmission, and explore what levels of coverage or effectiveness could be needed under specified assumptions. Such analysis can inform deliberation; whether an intervention works in practice also depends on implementation, evidence about its effects, and the conditions where it is used.

15. Allocating limited outbreak resources

During an outbreak, models can help estimate which locations or groups may have greater needs for constrained resources, including vaccination prioritization. The estimates can support allocation planning, but the decision also involves objectives, equity, feasibility, and uncertainty—not just a model output.

Uses in everyday services and planning

16. Predicting weather

Weather prediction combines historical observations with current conditions to estimate future states of the atmosphere. Newer probabilistic approaches represent a distribution of possible future weather outcomes rather than only a single result. The National Academies’ 2026 statistics volume discusses weather as an area where statistical methods contribute to scientific prediction.

17. Estimating travel time

Mapping services model road networks and traffic flows to estimate how long a journey may take. The result is an estimate shaped by the route, available traffic information, and changing conditions—not a guarantee of arrival time.

18. Planning personal finances

Models of income, spending, savings, and possible investment returns can help people compare budgets or retirement plans. They make assumptions about future circumstances, so their projections are useful for exploring possibilities rather than treating uncertain returns or life events as fixed.

Uses in research and scientific discovery

19. Analyzing biomedical measurements and images

Biomedical research often involves many measurements at once, including high-dimensional datasets and imaging. Statistical methods can analyze those data and help control multiple-testing error when many genes or brain-imaging measurements are examined. Without attention to multiple comparisons, apparently notable findings can arise by chance.

20. Distinguishing scientific signals from background

In physics and other sciences, statistical tests and models help researchers assess whether observed data are consistent with a signal or could plausibly reflect background variation. A National Academies-hosted report discusses the Higgs-boson discovery as an example of statistical evidence used in scientific discovery; the model contributes to evaluating evidence rather than replacing the experimental design or scientific judgment.

How to decide whether a model is fit for a decision

Before relying on a model, check the fit between its purpose and the actual decision. CDC/CFA cautions that using a model at the wrong point in a timeline can produce inaccurate conclusions.

  • Define the question. Is the task explanation, estimation, present-condition assessment, forecasting, scenario comparison, or study design?
  • Set the time horizon. Separate what is happening now from a near-term forecast and from a longer-term conditional projection.
  • Examine the data. Check who or what is covered, what is missing, how observations were collected, and whether reporting delays or bias could affect the result.
  • Make assumptions visible. Ask which relationships or mechanisms the model represents and which real-world factors it simplifies or leaves out.
  • Look for uncertainty and validation. Estimates and forecasts should communicate uncertainty. Where later observations become available, compare forecasts with those outcomes and consider other evidence and domain knowledge.
  • Weigh the cost of error. A model may be adequate for exploration but not for a high-stakes decision if a mistaken conclusion would cause substantial harm.

No model makes a decision automatically. Its value is in making a question more answerable while keeping the limits of the evidence in view.
