There is no evidence-based universal “top 10” ranking of MCP servers for Claude Code. The practical shortlist is to use GitHub’s official MCP Server for GitHub work, Microsoft Playwright MCP for browser automation, and Upstash Context7 for current code documentation; for the other workflows below, choose a server that matches the service and permissions your team actually uses. Anthropic’s documentation describes these workflows, but does not rank them by popularity or quality.

What an MCP server does in Claude Code

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) connects Claude Code to external tools, services, and data sources, so you can work with relevant context without manually pasting everything into chat. Anthropic documents examples including issue trackers, GitHub, monitoring, PostgreSQL, Figma, Slack, and Gmail. An MCP connection can make useful information available to a workflow, but it also means you should understand what the server can access and do before connecting it. Anthropic’s Claude Code MCP reference explains the integration.

Three named servers with clear task fits

These are task-based recommendations supported by their project descriptions, not a claim that they are the three most popular or independently tested. Check each project’s current setup and permission details before installing it.

1. GitHub MCP Server — repository collaboration

GitHub identifies this as its official MCP Server. It is the most direct candidate when a Claude Code workflow needs GitHub-centered context or actions. Before connecting, check whether the access you authorize is read-only or includes changes, what repositories it can reach, and whether it duplicates work you already do through the GitHub CLI. See GitHub’s MCP Server project.

2. Microsoft Playwright MCP — browser automation

Microsoft’s project describes Playwright MCP as a server for browser automation. Consider it when a task requires interacting with a browser rather than only reasoning about source code. Review its current setup instructions and how your environment handles authentication, browser sessions, and isolation. The project description establishes its purpose; it does not establish comparative browser coverage or performance. See Microsoft’s Playwright MCP project.

3. Upstash Context7 — current code documentation

Upstash describes Context7 as providing up-to-date code documentation for LLMs and AI code editors. It may suit work where the relevant library’s current documentation is useful context. Check whether it covers the libraries you use and how it presents source context; the project description is not a guarantee of coverage for every dependency. See Upstash Context7.

Seven more workflows: choose for your stack

Anthropic’s documented examples establish these as plausible integration tasks, not as seven verified, named server recommendations. Select a maintained project that supports the service you use, then verify its current compatibility and permissions on the project’s own page.

4. Issue tracking

Choose a server for your actual tracker, such as Jira if that is where your team manages work. Compare which projects and ticket fields it can read, whether it can edit or create issues, and how it authenticates. A tracker connector is a poor fit if its access is broader than the tasks require.

5. PostgreSQL

A PostgreSQL integration can support database-related tasks. Prioritize read-only controls where possible, understand the network boundary and credentials it uses, and consider what data query results could expose. Do not assume a server is safe for production merely because it can connect successfully.

6. Monitoring

Match the integration to your monitoring stack. Anthropic gives Sentry and Statsig as examples of monitoring context. Check whether the connector exposes events, alerts, or other information relevant to your task, and whether those results contain sensitive details.

7. Design context

A design-tool integration can help when code work depends on design context. Anthropic’s example combines Figma designs shared in Slack with an email-template task. Verify what designs and assets the server can retrieve and whether its access scope is appropriate for the project.

8. Team communication

A Slack or comparable workspace integration can supply team context. Distinguish searching messages from posting them: those are different levels of access and impact. Check channel scope, account permissions, and how much private conversation content the server can return.

9. Email

An email integration may help prepare communication; Anthropic gives drafting Gmail invitations as an example. Prefer a workflow with human review before sending, and distinguish permission to draft from permission to send. Confirm which mailbox or account the integration can access.

10. Custom or niche workflow

For a service specific to your project, start with a maintained source and verify who maintains it, when it was updated, what permissions it needs, and whether the task actually needs an MCP server. Anthropic notes that Claude Code can connect to hundreds of external tools and links to a directory and guidance for building servers; the existence of a listing is not an endorsement or assurance that a particular implementation remains maintained. The MCP servers repository is a discovery collection, not a compatibility or security guarantee.

How to add an MCP server to Claude Code

Claude Code supports local processes over stdio and remote servers over HTTP; WebSocket is also supported for remote services that push events. Anthropic recommends HTTP for remote servers, while SSE is deprecated in favor of HTTP where available. Use the transport and endpoint specified by the server’s current project instructions.

For a remote HTTP server

Run the documented command with the server name and its actual endpoint:

claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url>

For example, the shape of a command is claude mcp add --transport http service https://example.com/mcp; this is illustrative, not a real server endpoint. Do not substitute a guessed URL or copy an endpoint from an outdated guide.

For a local stdio process

Use the command and arguments supplied by the project. Claude Code’s documented form is:

claude mcp add <name> -- <command> [args...]

The text in brackets is a placeholder for the server’s actual launch command and arguments; it is not a package name to install. Check the project’s current instructions for prerequisites, credentials, and environment variables.

Choose the configuration scope deliberately

Claude Code supports local, project, and user scopes. A project configuration can be shared in a repository’s .mcp.json, which makes it convenient for a team but requires attention to workspace trust. After trusting the workspace, users may be asked to approve the project’s server configuration. Review the configuration and the server’s permissions before approving it. Consult the current Claude Code MCP documentation for the exact scope behavior and setup details.

Security: review access before connecting

Anthropic’s guidance is explicit: “Verify you trust each server before connecting it. Servers that fetch external content can expose you to prompt injection risk.” Treat content returned from a server as external input, not as instructions that automatically deserve trust.

  • Confirm the maintainer and project source, and read its current setup and permission documentation.
  • Grant only the access needed for the workflow; favor read-only permissions if write access is unnecessary.
  • Know which local or project data, accounts, databases, or channels the server can reach.
  • Review workspace-shared .mcp.json changes before approving them.
  • For tools that can change records, post messages, or send email, understand the approval and review steps before using them.

How to choose among candidates

Start with the task, not the number of tools installed. A repository workflow points toward GitHub; browser interaction toward Playwright; library documentation toward Context7. For the remaining categories, select by service fit and permission scope rather than treating an unverified directory listing as a recommendation.

Workflow Candidate or selection rule Check before connecting
GitHub repositories GitHub MCP Server Read/write access, repository scope, overlap with CLI
Browser automation Microsoft Playwright MCP Current setup, authentication, isolation
Code documentation Upstash Context7 Library coverage, source context, current setup
Issue tracking Server for your tracker Project coverage, edit rights, authentication
Database Server suitable for your PostgreSQL deployment Read-only controls, data exposure, network boundary
Monitoring Server for your monitoring stack Event coverage and sensitive data handling
Design, chat, or email Server for the service your workflow uses Asset or account scope; search versus write/send access
Niche task Maintained project-specific server, if needed Maintainer, updates, permissions, necessity

ScreenshotNeo as a browser-capture alternative

If the browser task is specifically to capture clean website screenshots or PDFs—not to automate general browser interactions—ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, with tools for AI agents including Claude and Cursor.

Or skip the browser setup

A single GET request can return a website screenshot as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, or a PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and setup. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common setup problems

  • The remote server does not connect: Check that you used the server’s current HTTP endpoint and the documented transport. Do not use an SSE endpoint if the service provides HTTP instead.
  • A local server fails to launch: Confirm the command, arguments, and prerequisites against the project’s current instructions. The generic stdio command form does not supply a server package or launch command.
  • A project server is awaiting approval: Check that you trust the workspace, then inspect the project’s .mcp.json and approve only the configuration you intend to use.
  • The integration lacks needed data or actions: Recheck its authorized account, repository, project, or channel scope and whether the server supports the task. Do not respond by granting broad access without understanding the impact.
  • Returned content contains suspicious instructions: Treat it as external content. Prompt-injection risk is one reason to connect only servers you trust and to review consequential actions.
