There is no defensible universal ranking of WordPress geolocation plugins: the directory listings document different jobs and do not provide a comparable accuracy or performance test. The ten candidates below are therefore organized by strongest documented fit—lookup, redirects, personalized content, or blocking—using information checked on September 30, 2026. Active-installation counts are directory metadata, not quality scores.
Choose by the task you must complete, then verify cache behavior, data source, privacy flow, maintenance and cost on a staging copy of your own site.
Quick selection guide
| Your task | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Expose visitor location to themes or plugins | Geolocation IP Detection | Functions, shortcodes, body classes, form integrations and several data sources. |
| Redirect countries or regions | IP2Location Redirection | Multiple rules, 301/302 responses and IPv4/IPv6 support. |
| Show different page content | If-So Geolocation | Conditional Gutenberg blocks, Elementor widgets and location pop-ups. |
| Block countries, ranges or anonymous proxies | IP2Location Country Blocker | Country groups, IP ranges, crawler allowlisting, custom 403 pages and reports. |
| Protect login, comments or XML-RPC by location | IP Location Block | Rules for countries, US states or equivalent regions, CIDR ranges and ASNs. |
These are starting points, not accuracy claims. IP geolocation is inherently approximate: Cloudflare describes it as “an estimate, not an exact science.” IP addresses rotate and ownership changes, and no comparable independent accuracy statistic is established for these plugins.
1. Geolocation IP Detection — general-purpose location data
This is the broadest fit when a theme or another plugin needs a visitor’s country or region. It supplies functions, shortcodes, body classes and form integrations. Listed sources include HostIP.info, MaxMind GeoIP2/GeoIP2 Lite, Cloudflare or Amazon CloudFront country data, Ipstack and Fastah. For page-cache deployments, its listing recommends AJAX mode.

#1 Best Overall
WordPress.org directory metadata showed 20,000+ active installations, version 5.6.4 and an update four months before September 30, 2026. Those figures describe listing activity, not reliability or precision.
2. IP2Location Redirection — country and region redirects
Use this when the primary action is sending visitors to another URL. It supports multiple rules, 301 and 302 redirects, and IPv4/IPv6. You can use IP2Location BIN data locally or the IP2Location.io web service.
The important operational constraint is explicit: it will not work when a cache plugin is enabled. The vendor recommends updating the BIN file monthly. Test every redirect with the full page-cache and CDN path that production will use.
3. Advanced GeoIP Redirect — redirect rules with device conditions
This plugin builds redirect rules with MaxMind GeoIP2. Its Pro description adds device-based rules, logs and analytics, and advertises compatibility with more than 25 cache plugins. Those are vendor claims; no independent cache or accuracy test establishes that they work for every hosting stack.

4. If-So Geolocation — conditional content and page builders
If-So is aimed at changing what a visitor sees rather than only changing the URL. It describes conditional Gutenberg blocks, Elementor widgets, location-based pop-ups and other dynamic content workflows. A core If-So plugin is also required.
Rank #2
The plugin offers browser HTML5 geolocation as an alternative to IP lookup. Browser location can be more precise for city-level experiences, but the browser requires the visitor’s consent. Its listing claims cache-plugin compatibility; confirm that claim with your exact cache, CDN and page-builder configuration.
5. IPGeolocation.io – Geo Redirects & Content Control — API-backed controls
This combines country redirects, IP and country access controls, conditional content and geolocation shortcodes. Country-based features require an IPGeolocation.io API key; IP blocking does not. The listing reports 24-hour per-address caching and offers a free Developer API plan alongside paid plans.
Because lookups can be sent to the external service, document that data flow for your privacy notice and assess the provider’s current terms before enabling it.
6. IP2Location Country Blocker — country and proxy blocking
Choose this for enforcement rather than personalization. It supports country and country-group blocks, anonymous-proxy detection, IP ranges, crawler allowlisting, IPv4/IPv6, custom 403 pages and blocked-traffic reports. Data can come from IP2Location BIN files or its web service.
Like IP2Location Redirection, its listing says it will not work with a cache plugin and recommends monthly BIN updates. Put blocking at a layer that actually sees the client IP; a page cache that serves a prior visitor’s response can defeat a rule.
7. IP Location Block — fine-grained access rules
IP Location Block targets access control for countries, US states or equivalent regions, IP/CIDR ranges and ASNs. Rules can cover selected login, registration, comments, XML-RPC and administrative requests.

Rank #3
The listing says its Cloud provider supplies premium, frequently updated data and regional precision. Do not transfer that granularity to alternative data sources without evidence. Stage rules carefully so administrators retain a tested recovery path.
8. Geo Redirect by GeoTargetly — broad geographic targeting
The WordPress.org GeoIP tag entry describes targeting by country, state, city, latitude/longitude or radius. Directory metadata showed 1,000+ active installations at access time. Because the material is a tag entry rather than a full compatibility evaluation, verify current settings, maintenance and pricing before selecting it for production redirects.
9. country-redirect — simple 302 redirects, with a maintenance warning
This is a narrowly focused country-based 302 redirect option. Its WordPress.org page warns that it has not been tested with the latest three major WordPress releases and may no longer be maintained or supported. Treat it as a legacy lead for a controlled experiment, not a default recommendation for a new site.
10. WP Cloudflare GeoIP Redirect — investigate before adoption
This appears in WordPress.org GeoIP tag results and may suit a Cloudflare-based setup. The available material does not provide enough current plugin-specific detail to verify compatibility, maintenance status or its exact feature set. Check the plugin page, changelog and a staging test before relying on it.
How do I redirect WordPress visitors by country?
- Define the response. Decide whether a temporary 302 or permanent 301 is appropriate. Use 302 while testing or when the destination may change.
- Pick the data path. A local BIN database avoids a request per visitor but requires updates. An external API sends IP information to a provider. CDN or hosting headers can be fast, but only if your proxy passes and validates them.
- Check caching first. Exclude the redirecting URL or use the plugin’s documented cache-safe mode. IP2Location Redirection and IP2Location Country Blocker explicitly state that they do not work with a cache plugin.
- Create narrow rules. Start with one country and one destination, preserve query strings where needed, and add an exception for administrators and monitoring services.
- Test on staging. Test IPv4 and IPv6, a normal browser, a logged-in administrator, CDN cache hits and misses, and a failed lookup. Confirm that the destination cannot redirect back to the source.
How can I show different WordPress content by visitor location?
- Choose a conditional-content tool such as If-So or a general lookup layer such as Geolocation IP Detection.
- Decide whether approximate IP country data is sufficient. If you request browser HTML5 location, explain the permission prompt and provide a useful fallback when consent is denied.
- Keep location-dependent markup out of a shared full-page cache, or render it after the page loads through an AJAX method supported by the plugin.
- Provide a default version for VPNs, mobile carriers, corporate gateways and unknown locations. Never assume a country result is exact.
- Review data retention, processor disclosures and consent requirements for your visitors’ jurisdictions.
How do I block visitors from countries or IP addresses?
- Specify the protected action: the whole site, selected paths, login, registration, comments, XML-RPC or administration.
- Use a blocker that supports the required rule type—country, country group, CIDR range, ASN, proxy or crawler exception.
- Choose a custom 403 response that explains the restriction without exposing internal details.
- Allowlist your monitoring provider, search crawlers where appropriate and at least one emergency administrator path.
- Measure blocked requests and review false positives. For compliance-critical decisions, combine IP data with a stronger first-party or device signal rather than relying on IP alone.
Data source, privacy and cache decisions
| Source | Operational benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Local BIN database | No per-request API dependency. | Files become stale; IP2Location encourages monthly updates. |
| External API | Provider-maintained data and potentially current coverage. | Visitor IP information is sent to the provider; API limits and recurring cost apply. |
| CDN or hosting header | Can avoid a WordPress lookup. | Only trustworthy when the proxy and header configuration are correct. |
| Browser HTML5 GPS/location | Potentially finer local precision. | Requires consent and a fallback when permission is refused. |
Cloudflare says its database is updated multiple times per week but provides no accuracy SLA. For precise or legally consequential restrictions, use additional first-party signals and obtain appropriate consent.
How to test a geolocation plugin without polluting screenshots
Run tests from staging with cache and CDN behavior enabled. Capture each country’s result, redirect status, response headers and logged rule. If a browser setup is useful, verify the page after consent banners and chat widgets have been handled so they do not obscure the result.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one request, removing cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the shot. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients call take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf.

Every visitor sees the same country
A full-page cache is serving one visitor’s response. Exclude the page, use AJAX rendering, or move the decision to a cache-aware edge layer.
Redirect loops or administrators are locked out
Add an explicit source-path exception and an administrator allowlist, then clear CDN and WordPress caches before retesting.
Country is unknown or wrong
Check whether the request contains a proxy address, mobile-carrier NAT, VPN or IPv6 range missing from the database. Compare a second data source and provide a neutral fallback.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAPI requests fail or slow the page
Verify the key, quota, TLS connection and timeout handling. Cache results for a documented period and fail open or closed according to the risk of the feature.
Browser location never appears
The visitor may have denied permission, the page may not be served in a secure context, or the browser may not support the API. Explain the prompt and retain IP-based or default content.

How to choose responsibly
- Match the plugin to the actual job instead of counting features.
- Record whether location data stays local, goes to an API, arrives from a CDN header or requires browser consent.
- Read the current changelog and test the production cache/CDN path.
- Label vendor compatibility and accuracy statements as claims until your staging tests confirm them.
- Use IP geolocation as an estimate, not the sole signal for safety, eligibility or legal compliance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are active installations a reliable way to rank these plugins?
No. They indicate directory adoption at a point in time, not accuracy, security, support quality or compatibility.
Which data source is most precise?
No source is universally precise. Browser location may be finer when consented, while IP, CDN and local-database results remain estimates affected by proxies, mobile networks and address changes.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I use a 301 or 302 redirect for geolocation?
Use 302 while rules are being tested or may change. Use 301 only when the destination is intended to be permanent and you understand the SEO and caching consequences.
Can a geolocation plugin enforce legal access restrictions by itself?
It should not be the sole control for a compliance-critical restriction. Combine it with stronger first-party or device signals, clear consent and an appeal or fallback path.
The Bottom Line
Start with Geolocation IP Detection for a general location layer, IP2Location Redirection for tested country redirects, If-So for conditional content, and IP2Location Country Blocker or IP Location Block for access control. Validate every choice against your cache, CDN, data-flow and privacy requirements; none of these listings proves universal accuracy.
