Toilet paper roll fall trees can be freestanding decorations or flat pictures. The empty cardboard tube becomes the trunk; make the autumn canopy with paint dots, a printed shaving-cream pattern, cut cardboard, or paint stamped onto paper. Choose a standing-tree method for a small 3D display, or stamping for a simpler, flat project.
Choose a toilet paper roll fall tree craft

The tutorials do not provide a controlled comparison of time, cost, or cleanup. Choose by the finished shape and the steps you want to manage.
Make a standing paint-dot fall tree
Gather supplies
- Cardboard tubes
- Pencil and scissors
- Green, yellow, red, and orange paint
- Cotton swabs, a paintbrush, and a paper plate or palette
Cut the tree and add leaves
- Flatten a tube and draw a tree shape that includes a base so it can stand.
- Cut along the outline, keeping the two sides connected at one point. Reopen the tube and adjust the base until the tree stands.
- Use cotton swabs to dab seasonal colors onto the tree as leaves. A finger, piece of paper towel, or sponge can be used instead.
Acrylic Painting School suggests this activity for ages 2–5 with adult help. Its tutorial also suggests naming colors, counting dots, or lining up trees to talk about seasonal change; these are activity ideas, not measured learning outcomes. Acrylic Painting School’s tutorial pairs the craft with Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn by Kenard Pak as an optional read-aloud.
Make a shaving-cream printed canopy
Gather supplies
- A tray or other flat surface and shaving cream
- Food coloring and a spatula
- A canopy shape printed or drawn on cardstock
- Scissors and a cardboard tube
- Hot glue or craft glue
Print, dry, and attach the canopy
- Spread shaving cream on the tray and swirl food coloring through it.
- Press the cardstock canopy shape into the colored shaving cream.
- Scrape excess shaving cream from the cardstock and let the print dry. Kids Activity Zone gives 30 minutes as its drying interval.
- Cut out the canopy and attach it to the cardboard tube with hot glue or craft glue.
This method involves more stages and a messier material than dabbing paint directly on a tube. Kids Activity Zone also suggests using a cotton ball to dab acrylic paint on the canopy instead of making a shaving-cream print. See the Kids Activity Zone instructions.

Assemble a slotted cardboard canopy
For a tree with a separate, dimensional canopy, cut a trunk from a cardboard tube and make slits in it to hold a canopy cut from corrugated cardboard. Paint the parts, fit the canopy into the slits, and secure the assembly with hot glue or craft glue. Buttons and felt are optional decorations. Stamp a flat fall tree picture
Cut a trunk from brown construction paper and glue it to paper or cardstock. Dip the end of a toilet paper roll into paint and stamp around the trunk to make the leaves. Life Over C’s lists a paper plate, paint, paper or cardstock, tubes, scissors, glue, and brown construction paper for this project, and recommends it for preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. Adapt the craft for children
- For toddlers or children who are not ready to cut, an adult can prepare the tree or canopy shapes in advance.
- When children practice cutting, use child-safe scissors and provide suitable adult supervision, as the tutorials advise.
- With the paint-dot method, children can make leaves with cotton swabs, fingers, a sponge, or paper towel.
