TOEM 2 is a gentle, single-player photography adventure built around exploring, helping people, and using a camera to solve problems. Its charm and unhurried pace make it an inviting fit for players who enjoy wandering and collecting small discoveries; its more guided quest progression may feel overly automatic to some, as PC Gamer’s review argues.
What you do in TOEM 2
You travel through a series of environments, meet residents and critters, and photograph mysterious events called “TOEMs.” The camera is more than a way to document a scene: photos can solve puzzles, reveal secrets, record discoveries, and fulfill requests from locals. Camera attachments add new ways to interact with the world, including uses beyond taking pictures.

Helping characters and recording quests and discoveries fills your journal with stamps. The official PlayStation description says those stamps unlock the next region, giving exploration a clear purpose without turning it into a race.
How the quest structure feels
A relaxed route through each area
According to PC Gamer’s release-period review, travel between towns involves taking buses and completing photographic tasks for locals to earn stamps. The review describes a clearer central quest in each area, with a local’s need and a special attachment linked along the intended route. Outfits and a critter compendium offer additional goals for players who want to pursue more than the main progression.

The tradeoff: guidance versus discovery
GamesRadar praises the game’s charm, writing, humorous interactions, and exploration. PC Gamer likewise finds the quest structure cute, but says that the streamlined progression can make progress feel too automatic. Those are individual reviewers’ judgments, not a guarantee of how every player will respond. The practical distinction is whether you prefer a clear sequence of local requests or a looser adventure that leaves more of the route to you.
Platforms and Switch edition differences
Store and review listings cover PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo US listing gives the Switch 2 release date as September 29, 2026, and lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes. Nintendo also states that save data from the Switch version is not compatible with the Switch 2 version, so do not assume progress transfers between those editions.

Steam showed 93% positive from 101 user reviews when retrieved on October 4, 2026. That is a changing user-review snapshot, not a critic score or a permanent verdict. The review coverage offers a more useful qualitative picture: GamesRadar responds positively to the writing and exploration, while PC Gamer’s main reservation is that the streamlined progression can feel automatic.
Quick Recap
Who should play TOEM 2?
- Good fit: players who enjoy relaxed exploration, photographic puzzles, helping memorable characters, and collecting journal discoveries without a completion timer.
- Potential mismatch: players who want progression to feel highly open-ended or prefer to uncover the main route with minimal direction.
- Newcomers: the official description says the sequel is designed to welcome first-time players, so prior knowledge of the original is not presented as a requirement.
