TinyTorch is a free, open-source, 20-module curriculum for implementing machine-learning framework concepts in pure Python, from tensors to transformers. It deliberately uses a PyTorch-like API so learners can connect their own implementations to familiar framework concepts—but it is a teaching project, not a replacement for production PyTorch. Its authors say learning outcomes have not been measured.
What is TinyTorch?
TinyTorch is a hands-on curriculum in which you fill in implementation steps in Jupyter notebooks and use a command-line tool called tito. Rather than only using a machine-learning library, you build pieces of one: tensor operations, automatic differentiation (autograd), optimizers, and attention-related components. The curriculum is organized into 20 modules across four tiers, according to the PyTorch article published September 21, 2026.
The project’s authors describe its resemblance to PyTorch as an intentional teaching choice: the API is meant to help learners recognize concepts when they later encounter PyTorch. That is the curriculum’s rationale, not evidence that completing it improves job performance or makes someone a better production debugger.
What do you learn by building a small PyTorch-like framework?
The focus is implementation practice: making core machine-learning framework ideas work in a small, understandable system. Milestones provide checks that code is functioning as learners progress. The article describes six historical milestones, including a CNN milestone with a 75% CIFAR-10 threshold; these are figures reported by the authors, not independently audited results or a guarantee of what every learner will achieve.

The curriculum’s examples use small datasets intended for local work. The authors report about 1,000 grayscale digit examples and 350 conversational question-answer pairs, together under 50 MB. They also describe offline operation during training, so a cloud account or continuous network access is not presented as a prerequisite.
What do you need to get started?
- Programming background: Python and comfort with NumPy.
- Computer: The authors state a laptop floor of 4 GB of RAM.
- Accelerator or cloud: Neither a GPU nor a cloud account is required for the described CPU-based curriculum.
- Working style: Jupyter notebooks for implementation, with the
titocommand-line tool and milestone checks.
These requirements describe the project as presented by its authors; they do not promise equal performance on every machine or establish support for every operating system.

What TinyTorch does not teach or replace
TinyTorch mirrors PyTorch at the API surface, but the authors say it omits major production internals: the dispatcher, C++ and CUDA layers, just-in-time compilation, and distributed functionality. Its implementation is much slower than PyTorch. In one illustrative comparison, the authors report 97 seconds for a TinyTorch Conv2d batch versus 10 milliseconds for PyTorch. That is their example, not a general benchmark; it should not be treated as a universal performance ratio.
The scope is CPU-only and single-node. The article identifies GPU kernels, distributed training, gradient synchronization, parallel data loading, and GPU memory management as omissions. TinyTorch can help a learner examine foundational concepts, but it is not a route through all of the engineering problems involved in training or operating large-scale production systems.

Who might find the curriculum useful?
TinyTorch is a natural fit for learners who want to implement framework components rather than only call library APIs, and for instructors looking for a structured systems-oriented course. The project article describes self-paced study, a half-semester Foundation tier, a four-credit course using all 20 modules, and an Optimization tier used in an edge seminar. It also reports company use for onboarding and internal training; these are examples reported by the authors, not independently verified adoption claims.
For educators, the article describes NBGrader autograding, instructor documentation, rubrics, and milestone scripts. Those resources may make the curriculum easier to adapt to a course, but instructors should assess fit against their students’ background, teaching schedule, and grading needs.

What is known about learning outcomes?
The authors state, “We have not measured learning outcomes.” They also say they lack controlled evidence showing that the curriculum produces better production debugging than conventional coursework. The project offers a clear educational rationale and implementation activities, but its article does not establish causal evidence that students learn more, retain more, or perform better professionally after completing it.
How large is the project community?
In the September 21, 2026 article, the authors report 682 community members across 92 institutions since a December 2025 launch, more than 27,000 repository stars, at least 95 contributors, and courses at 50 or more universities. These are author-reported counts that can change over time; they should not be read as independently audited measures of course quality or outcomes.
