TinyJS App Studio is a graphical front end for the TinyJS command-line tool. You use it to create an app from a template, wrap a hosted website in a native window, open a TinyJS project already on disk, preview it, and run or build it while the CLI output streams into the app. TinyJS’s official product page reports that a shipped app is about 6 MB, because it uses the operating system’s own webview instead of bundling Electron or Chromium. That size figure is the vendor’s own approximate number, not an independent measurement.

Two details need correcting before you plan around the tool. The runtime does not need Node to run an app, but Vite-based workflows can still require Node for development and building. And the Studio’s wrap workflow was not yet in a release when its author published the article, so check your installed CLI before relying on it.

What the Studio does

The Studio, described by its author in a DEV Community article (accessed 7 October 2026), covers four core workflows. Each one maps to a button or panel in the app rather than a command you type.

Create an app from a template

The Studio creates new projects from vanilla or Vite-based templates. The article does not list the individual Vite starter variants, so check the template picker in your installed version to see which ones are offered.

Wrap a website

You enter a URL and choose window options, and the Studio produces a desktop shell around that hosted site. This is the workflow the article describes as the wrap command, and it is the one with the release caveat covered below.

Add an existing TinyJS folder

An existing project folder can be added to the sidebar without moving or copying its files. The project stays where it is on disk, and the Studio works against that location.

Run, build, stop, duplicate, or reveal a project

Selecting a project exposes run, build, and stop actions, plus duplicate and reveal-in-file-manager. CLI output appears in the app as it streams, so you do not need a separate terminal window to watch a build.

Preview, inspection, and editing tools

Beyond the four workflows, the Studio bundles several panels that the author describes as part of the normal working loop:

  • Live preview of the running app.
  • Configuration inspector for reviewing the project’s settings without opening the config file by hand.
  • File tree for browsing project files.
  • Editor built on vendored CodeMirror 6, so the editor code ships with the Studio rather than loading from a network service.
  • Streamed CLI logs from run and build operations.

Two preview modes are worth knowing about. Menu-bar mode previews an app that lives in the menu bar. The iPhone-shaped preview changes the user-agent preset so you can check the mobile layout of a page. The iPhone preview is a viewing aid inside the Studio. It does not mean TinyJS targets iOS, and the platform notes below explain why it does not.

How the runtime works

TinyJS separates the app into two halves. The backend is JavaScript running on txiki.js, a small JavaScript runtime. The window is the webview that the operating system already provides. The official product page makes the backend choice explicit: “The backend is JavaScript, not Rust, so there is no compile step and no second language in the project.”

Platform webviews

Because the window comes from the operating system, each platform renders your page with a different engine. The official site warns that rendering differs between platforms, so the same page can look or behave differently on each.

Platform Webview used Status on the official site
macOS WebKit Stable
Windows WebView2 Beta
Linux WebKitGTK Beta

The Studio article calls macOS the primary platform and Windows and Linux beta. The two sources agree on where the project stands, so the table reflects the vendor’s own status labels.

Local communication

The local page and the backend do not talk over an HTTP port. On Unix systems they use a private Unix socket, and on Windows they use a named pipe. The runtime also exposes native features such as menus and dialogs, and it can package an app for desktop distribution.

Where the ~6 MB figure comes from

Component Approximate size (vendor figure)
txiki.js binary About 5.6 MB
Launcher Roughly 1–2 MB
Total app, before the project’s own files About 6 MB as stated on the product page

The page says the savings come from reusing the OS webview rather than shipping Chromium, and it does not bundle Electron or Node. Your own project files add to the total, so a large site or asset set will produce a bigger app. These numbers are the vendor’s own, and no independent benchmark has been published for them.

Do you need Node?

The answer depends on which parts of the toolchain you use:

  • Running the runtime: not required, because the backend is txiki.js and the window is the OS webview.
  • Vite-based templates: Node can still be needed for the development and build steps, because the official site says Vite-oriented workflows may require it.
  • npm packages: pure-JavaScript packages can be bundled into the app. Native Node addons do not work, because the runtime is not Node.

The sources do not list which frameworks the Studio’s templates include. The official site and the Studio article describe vanilla and Vite-based starting points, and they do not confirm React, Vue, Svelte, or TypeScript setups one by one. Test the framework you plan to use against the template you pick before committing a project to it.

Is it production ready?

The answer depends on the platform and on which Studio features you need:

  • macOS: labeled stable on the official product page, and the primary platform in the Studio article.
  • Windows and Linux: labeled beta on both sources. Test rendering and behavior on each target OS before shipping.
  • Wrap command: the Studio author wrote that this command was being contributed upstream and was not in a release at the time of publication. Run your installed CLI version and confirm the wrap option is present before you plan a project around it.

The sources do not include independent performance, reliability, or security test results, so the readiness judgment rests on the vendor’s stated status and the platform-by-platform labels above.

Securing a wrapped website

A wrapped website runs inside your app, so the security boundary matters. The TinyJS docs state that the tiny bridge is injected into every origin. Without a gate, a wrapped page could call the backend and reach filesystem access. Configure the app’s origin-specific capability gate deliberately, so that only the origins you trust can use the bridge. Treat this as a required setup step for any site you do not fully control.

Dialogs, downloads, popups, and updates

The official docs cover how a hosted site’s behavior is configured. You can set how the app handles dialogs, downloads, popups, and navigation. TinyJS also ships an updater that checks checksums and signatures. The Studio article describes GUI access to run and build, but it does not establish whether a built app will pass app-store review, sign successfully on a given machine, or install cleanly for end users. Test those steps on your own machine and with your own distribution channel.

Compatibility limits

  • TinyJS is a desktop runtime. It is not an iOS or Android runtime, so the iPhone preview is a viewing tool only.
  • Native Node addons are not supported.
  • The Studio and runtime rendering depends on each OS webview, so features that work in one browser engine may need adjustment in another.

How it compares with Electron

If you are choosing between TinyJS and Electron or a similar wrapper, compare these axes:

  • Shipped bundle size and who owns the browser engine. TinyJS reuses the OS webview. Electron ships Chromium.
  • Backend language and Node API or addon compatibility. TinyJS uses a JavaScript backend on txiki.js. Electron runs Node.
  • Consistency across operating systems. A bundled engine gives the same rendering everywhere. An OS webview varies by platform.
  • Maturity of each target platform. TinyJS labels macOS stable and Windows and Linux beta.
  • The configuration of the website-to-native API boundary, especially the capability gate for the tiny bridge.

The sources support these dimensions but do not provide benchmark results for performance, reliability, or security. Use them as a checklist for your own tests.

Who should try it

TinyJS App Studio fits a developer who wants a small, JavaScript-only desktop shell for a web app or a static site, is comfortable with OS-dependent rendering, and can test on the platform they ship to. It fits less well if you need one identical rendering engine across every OS, need native Node addons, or need a mobile target.
