TinyGo is an alternative Go compiler for constrained targets, especially microcontrollers and WebAssembly/WASI. It lets developers use the Go language in environments where the standard Go toolchain’s usual assumptions may not fit—but whether it is a good choice depends on the exact board, peripherals, and target maturity.

What is TinyGo?

TinyGo is a Go compiler built with LLVM and Go tooling libraries. The TinyGo project documentation says, “The TinyGo project implements the exact same programming language.” Its purpose is to bring Go to smaller or specialized environments, including microcontrollers, WebAssembly/WASI, and command-line tools. The project aims for small binaries, support for common microcontroller boards, WebAssembly usability, CGo support, and compatibility with much of the standard library. It does not aim to be efficient with extremely large numbers of goroutines. TinyGo project documentation.

TinyGo is an alternative compiler, not a different programming language. However, that does not mean every Go program or library will work unchanged: target capabilities and the available standard-library support matter. Check the project’s language support documentation for the features relevant to your code.

Where can TinyGo run?

Microcontrollers and embedded devices

TinyGo documents support for more than 150 boards and devices. That is a project-published count, not a guarantee of equal support or peripheral coverage on every board. The microcontroller documentation lists supported hardware; check the exact board and processor rather than relying on the headline count.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

WebAssembly and WASI

TinyGo documents browser WebAssembly and WASI targets. The project repository includes WASI examples and names Fastly Compute, Fermyon Spin, and wazero as runtime environments. These are examples, not an exhaustive compatibility guarantee; confirm that the runtime and the APIs your program needs work for your use case. TinyGo repository.

Desktop operating systems

The TinyGo repository also describes Linux, macOS, and Windows targets. That does not make TinyGo a general replacement for the standard Go compiler on desktop: its distinctive value is in compact or specialized targets.

Which microcontroller should you use with TinyGo?

Use the exact processor and board support information to compare options. In its processor documentation snapshot from early 2026, TinyGo describes SAMD21, SAMD51, nRF52840, RP2040, and RP2350 families as well supported; Raspberry Pi Pico is an example of an RP2040 board. The same documentation describes Wi-Fi support for ESP32-C3 and ESP32-S3, while Wi-Fi support for ESP8266 and ESP32 is not yet available in that documented state. Bluetooth is described as coming soon. These feature and maturity statements are time-sensitive, so check the current processor page before choosing hardware. TinyGo processor documentation.

  • Target support: Is your exact board or processor listed, and what support category does the project give it?
  • Peripherals: Does the target support the sensors, connectivity, timing, and I/O your project requires? Board support alone does not establish that every peripheral you need is available.
  • Maturity: Is the relevant processor backend or feature described as well supported, experimental, or early stage?
  • Resources: Will the chip’s flash and static memory accommodate your program and packages? This can be particularly restrictive on small AVR boards.
  • Execution environment: Are you targeting bare-metal embedded execution, browser WebAssembly, or WASI? Those are different build and runtime choices.

The compiler-internals documentation characterizes ARM Cortex-M as well supported, says the LLVM AVR backend is experimental and may have bugs, and describes ESP8266/ESP32 support as early stage. TinyGo compiler-internals documentation.

Example: trying TinyGo on a Raspberry Pi Pico

A Raspberry Pi Pico is a reasonable starting point for embedded experimentation because TinyGo identifies it as an RP2040 example. Before buying, verify the exact board revision and that the current TinyGo target supports the peripherals your project needs. The project’s board documentation is the place to confirm the target rather than assuming every Pico variant or feature is interchangeable. TinyGo microcontroller documentation.

How do you select a TinyGo target?

Target selection affects the build target and can also determine related emulator, flashing, and debugging behavior. The build-options documentation gives target examples including wasm, arduino, microbit, and cortex-m-qemu. TinyGo build options.

  1. Identify the execution environment. Decide whether the program will run on a specific microcontroller, in a browser, or in a WASI runtime.
  2. Find the exact target. Use TinyGo’s supported-target documentation to locate the board or environment, then check the processor’s support level and required features.
  3. Build for that target. Select the target using the documented TinyGo build options; do not assume a default build produces the right artifact for your hardware or runtime.
  4. Plan deployment and debugging. Check whether the target’s documented tooling supports the emulator, flashing, or debugging workflow you need.

How small are TinyGo programs?

TinyGo’s overview gives one illustrative binary-size comparison: Go output is 837 kB, or 1.9 MB before stripping, while TinyGo output is 10 kB, or 251 kB before stripping. The page does not state a year for this example, and it is not a general benchmark or a promise that other programs will reach those sizes. Actual output depends on the program and build conditions. TinyGo project overview.

The practical point is that compact output is a project goal, but a single example cannot establish the size of your application. Build the program for the exact target and evaluate the resulting artifact against its flash and memory limits.

When is TinyGo a sensible choice?

  • Consider it when you need Go on a supported microcontroller or want to compile Go for a browser WebAssembly or WASI environment.
  • Check carefully first when the project depends on a particular peripheral, networking feature, a very constrained chip, or a processor family whose backend is experimental or early stage.
  • Look elsewhere or test a small prototype if your application depends on Go features or library behavior that the relevant TinyGo target does not support, or if it requires very large numbers of goroutines.

Choosing by target and feature maturity is more reliable than choosing by the number of listed boards. A supported target is only a starting point: the application still has to fit the chip’s resources and use capabilities that TinyGo provides for that hardware or runtime.
