Timewarrior is an open-source command-line tool for recording time intervals and producing reports. You can start and stop a timer, tag work, correct past entries, and export tracked intervals as JSON—all with data stored locally rather than in a hosted account.
What is Timewarrior?
Timewarrior records when you work and helps summarize that time. Its official manual describes it as a command-line tracker for recording time and generating summary reports: timew(1) manual. The project describes the software as a portable utility with stopwatch-style tracking, calendar-based entry of past time, and flexible reports. It is released under the MIT license; see the project README.
It is best suited to people comfortable working in a terminal who want locally managed records and detailed control over entries. It is not, by itself, a shared team timekeeping or billing service.
Install Timewarrior
The project documents two approaches: install a community-provided binary package for your platform, or build from source. Package names and availability depend on the operating system, so consult the current README for the applicable instructions.

Build from source
The README’s source-build requirements include Git, CMake 3.8 or later, Make, and a C++17 compiler (GCC 8+ or Clang 5+). Python 3 is required for the test suite, and Asciidoctor is needed to build documentation. Its example uses the timew-1.10.0 source archive; this is an example, not a guarantee that it is the newest release. Check the project README for the current archive and steps. The documented CMake installation defaults to /usr/local.
Start, stop, and continue tracking
Timewarrior’s basic workflow uses the timew command. The official command reference covers starting, stopping, continuing, and manually recording intervals: timew(1) command reference.

timew startbegins tracking. Add one or more tags after the command to label the activity, for exampletimew start writing report.timew stopends the active interval.timew continueresumes the most recent interval.timew trackrecords an interval for a specified time or date range, useful for entering work after it happened. Consult the manual for accepted date and time syntax.
Tags let you group records by project, client, or activity. The command set also includes tag, untag, retag, tags, and annotate for managing labels and adding context to intervals.
Correct records and review your time
Entries are not immutable: Timewarrior provides commands to move, lengthen, shorten, resize, modify, split, join, delete, and undo changes to intervals. Use the command reference for the appropriate syntax before editing historical data.

Where Timewarrior stores data
Timewarrior stores tracking records locally in date-based YYYY-MM.data files. On current installations without a legacy data directory, the manual gives the data location as ${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}/timewarrior/data and the configuration directory under the corresponding XDG config location. Existing legacy directories and platform conventions can affect the paths, so check the manual for your installation rather than assuming every system uses the same location.

The project’s 2016 release announcement states that data is stored locally in clear text: Timewarrior 1.0.0 release announcement. That means the files are readable on the machine where they are stored; protect them with the same care as other personal records. Local storage also means syncing or sharing those records is a separate task, not an automatic hosted feature.

Taskwarrior manages pending tasks; Timewarrior records time spent on them. Timewarrior’s on-modify hook links the two. When a Taskwarrior task starts, the hook begins tracking and passes the task description, project, and tags to Timewarrior as tags. Changes to those properties are propagated, and stopping or completing the task stops tracking.

- Copy the Timewarrior
on-modifyhook into~/.task/hooks/. - Make the copied hook executable.
- Run
task diagnosticsand check that Taskwarrior recognizes the hook.
Follow the hook’s current setup instructions in the project repository, since the exact file location may depend on how Timewarrior was installed.
Export JSON and create custom reports
Timewarrior can export tracked intervals as JSON, which is useful when another script or tool needs to process the records. Its extension mechanism also supports custom reports: place an executable script or program in ~/.timewarrior/extensions. Timewarrior invokes the extension and sends configuration and filtered interval records as JSON on standard input; the extension’s output is captured and displayed as report output. The API is one-way: an extension receives data and configuration but cannot communicate back to Timewarrior. See the official documentation for extension details.
