I built a lightweight time-tracking web utility to make a common calculation less error-prone: clock time is measured in hours and minutes, but labor totals are often calculated in decimal hours. The essential conversion is simple—divide minutes by 60—but a workday can also involve elapsed time, unpaid breaks, and weekly totals. A small calculator can help with that arithmetic; it is not a substitute for a system that keeps accurate work records.
Why clock time and labor math do not line up neatly
Clock time uses base 60: 60 minutes make an hour. Decimal hours use base 10, so a fraction of an hour must be converted before you multiply it by an hourly rate or add it to a decimal timesheet total. Treating the digits after the colon as decimal digits is the common trap: 7 hours and 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45.
The utility’s purpose is to make this translation and the surrounding arithmetic straightforward. The underlying need is practical rather than mysterious: calculate a shift, account for a break, total several entries, and express the result in a form suitable for labor calculations.

How to convert time into decimal hours
Use this formula:
Decimal hours = whole hours + (minutes ÷ 60) + (seconds ÷ 3,600)
#1 Best Overall
- 8-Digit Calculator; Constants for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
- Water Resistant
- 1/100 second stopwatch; Measuring capacity: 23:59'59.99"; Measuring modes: Elapsed time, split time, 1st-2nd place times
- Auto Calendar (pre-programmed until the year 2079)
- Size of case/total weight; 42.0 x 33.0 x 7.0mm / 29g
For example, 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hour, so 7 hours 45 minutes becomes 7.75 decimal hours. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hour, so 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.5 hours. These are arithmetic conversions, not research statistics. A calculator reference with the same conversion examples is available from Omni Calculator’s time card calculator.
If a duration includes seconds, convert those separately by dividing by 3,600, then add the result. Keep enough precision for the calculation at hand; rounding the displayed result is a separate decision from converting the duration.

Real-time battery level is shown in the app each time you use it, reminding you to charge in time and avoid sudden power off during use.
How to calculate a shift with a break
Calculate elapsed time first, subtract any unpaid break that should not count as worked time, and then convert the remaining duration to decimal hours. For instance, a shift from 7:30 to 16:15 spans 8 hours 45 minutes. Subtracting a 45-minute unpaid break leaves 8 worked hours. A time-card calculator describes this same example and workflow; it is a vendor-published illustration, not an independent test: Calculator Soup’s time card calculator.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Find the elapsed duration between the start and end times, accounting for whether the shift crosses midnight.
- Subtract break time that is not counted as worked time under the applicable arrangement.
- Convert the remaining hours and minutes into decimal hours using minutes ÷ 60.
- Add daily decimal totals only after each entry has been calculated consistently.
For a weekly total, the key is consistency: sum durations or their correctly converted decimal equivalents, rather than adding clock minutes as though they were hundredths. Converting entries to whole minutes before adding and subtracting, then converting the final total back, is one way a time-card tool describes handling the arithmetic.

What a calculator can—and cannot—do
A lightweight web utility is useful when the job is a one-off conversion or a quick labor-math check. A persistent timekeeping system serves a different purpose: it can retain entries over time and may support exports. Feature descriptions on vendor pages should be understood as vendor claims, not independent validation; for example, see TimeCamp’s timesheet calculator page.
| Need | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Quick conversion | Inputs for hours and minutes, with a clear decimal-hours result. |
| Shift arithmetic | Clock-in and clock-out times, break handling, and a way to total entries. |
| Ongoing records | Persistent entries and any copy or export options needed for the workflow; verify these on the provider’s own product information. |
| Payroll or compliance records | A process that preserves complete and accurate records for the applicable workers and jurisdiction. |
A calculator can produce a number without retaining the information needed to explain or substantiate it later. If the work involves recurring shifts, multiple workers, payroll handoffs, or record retention, choose a recordkeeping method for those needs rather than treating a conversion page as the whole timekeeping process.

Decimal conversion is not a rounding policy
Converting 7 hours 45 minutes to 7.75 decimal hours is a format change; it does not authorize rounding clock entries or determine which time is compensable. The U.S. Department of Labor’s 2026 Opinion Letter FLSA2026-8 discusses the rule in 29 C.F.R. § 785.48(b), which says rounding practices must “not result, over a period of time, in failure to compensate the employees properly for all the time they have actually worked.” See the Department of Labor opinion letter.
Keep any rounding rule distinct from the conversion formula. Whether a particular time is compensable, and whether a rounding practice is permissible, depends on the governing rules and circumstances; decimal formatting by itself answers neither question.
U.S. federal recordkeeping context
For employers covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Department of Labor says required hours-worked and wage information must be maintained, but it does not mandate a particular record form if the method is complete and accurate. Fact Sheet #21 lists retention periods of three years for payroll records and two years for records used to compute wages. The sheet was revised in July 2008 and describes itself as general information rather than an official statement of position with force and effect of law. Read the Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #21 for the details and scope.
This is U.S. federal guidance, not a universal rule for every location or worker. Employers should confirm which requirements apply to their situation and jurisdiction.
