A retail time clock records employees’ work time through a configured point-of-sale system, shared kiosk, web or mobile app, or another supported method. Managers use the resulting timecards to review shifts, hours, breaks, and overtime and to support payroll. Choose a system around how staff actually clock in, how managers handle timecards, and whether its scheduling, payroll, and POS connections fit your stores.
What a retail time clock records
The central record is the employee timecard. Square defines a timecard as a record of a set of shifts, generally associated with a business’s pay period; it can include hours, breaks, shift history, and overtime. Square’s U.S. time-tracking documentation also explains that supported Square products can record time through the POS app and Dashboard, subject to the applicable product, subscription, and setup.
A time clock is therefore more than a device at the staff entrance. It is a configured capture method plus the system that stores and presents work-time records. Scheduling, timecard review, alerts, and payroll handoff may be part of the same product, but availability and configuration vary.

Start with where and how employees will clock in. Consider the store layout, employee roles, device access, and the policies managers need to enforce. Available approaches described by vendors include POS or shared-terminal clock-ins, web and mobile options, and QR or touchless time entry.

- Existing POS: May let employees clock in on equipment already used at the store. Confirm the specific product, subscription, and setup required; Square documents time tracking in its POS app for supported configurations.
- Shared kiosk or terminal: Gives staff a common location to clock in. Check how the system identifies each employee and whether the chosen hardware can run its kiosk workflow.
- Web or mobile: Can suit roles or locations where a shared terminal is impractical. Confirm which methods are available and whether they match your workplace policy.
- QR or touchless entry: Zebra describes QR and touchless timekeeping options for its Workcloud offering. Verify the current product details and the devices and setup they require.
Do not assume every clock-in method is available on every plan or appropriate for every role. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the method with the store’s actual employee and manager workflows.
Compare timecard controls and integrations
Before choosing, test how a system handles the steps between a clock-in and a payroll-ready record. Ask for a demonstration using a representative pay period and the payroll process your business follows.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Timecard administration | How managers review and approve time, correct missed punches, and see breaks, shift history, hours, and overtime. Specific functions vary by system. |
| Payroll connection | Whether the exact payroll product and plan are supported, and whether data is exported, synchronized, or transferred another way. ADP describes payroll synchronization for its retail offering; verify the current details for your configuration. |
| POS connection | Whether your named POS system is supported and what data moves between it and the time clock. ADP describes integrations with leading retail POS systems, but that does not establish compatibility with every POS. |
| Scheduling and alerts | Whether schedules connect to clock-ins and timecard review, and which alerts for overtime or breaks can be configured. Features and rule settings vary. |
| Locations, roles, and pay rates | How the system handles multiple stores, job roles, and different pay rates if your business needs them. TCP Software’s retail materials describe scheduling and tracking capabilities; confirm the features available in the offering you would use. |
| Setup and operating cost | Subscription, supported hardware, implementation, and any separate payroll or scheduling tools. The cited product materials do not establish current prices, so request a current quote for your setup. |
Vendor pages describe their own products, not independent comparisons. For example, ADP says that more than 29,000 retailers choose it; this is a vendor-stated customer count, not an independent measure of product quality or suitability.

Set up a time clock in an existing POS
If your store already uses a supported POS, check whether it can capture employee time before buying another device. Square’s U.S. support documentation uses the setup wording “Set up time tracking” and describes time tracking through its POS app and Dashboard for supported products and plans.
- Confirm that your Square product and subscription support time tracking in your U.S. configuration. Availability is product-specific.
- Follow Square’s current setup instructions for “Set up time tracking” in the POS app or Dashboard, as applicable to your setup.
- Test the clock-in and clock-out process with the employee roles and POS devices used in the store.
- Review a sample timecard in the Dashboard and confirm that it contains the information managers need for review and payroll workflows.
- Verify separately whether any payroll or scheduling connection you need is supported by your selected product and plan.
For instructions and supported-product details, see Square’s U.S. guide to setting up timecards. Other POS providers may use different labels, requirements, and workflows.

A shared employee kiosk can be a separate tablet or terminal, but it may not be necessary if an existing, supported POS device can handle clock-ins. A tablet stand for employee time-clock kiosk use is a possible accessory where the selected software supports a tablet or POS kiosk workflow. The vendor materials cited here do not establish a universal tablet model or mount.

Some retail time and attendance products describe tools intended to support compliance, such as configurable break or overtime rules. Those functions are not a guarantee that an employer is compliant. Rules differ by jurisdiction and may depend on how the business operates; employers remain responsible for applicable obligations and for configuring systems correctly. Have a qualified adviser confirm the requirements for each location, then verify that the product can be configured to support the processes you need.
