A manufacturing time clock should do more than record when employees arrive and leave if your operation needs to track shifts, overtime, job or department labor, and payroll data. The term can mean a physical clock terminal, time-and-attendance software, or a broader workforce or manufacturing platform. The right choice depends on your plant conditions, work rules, and existing payroll and ERP systems.

What a manufacturing time clock needs to handle

In a production environment, attendance is often only the starting point. Depending on how labor is scheduled and paid, the system may also need to capture:

  • Shift schedules and exceptions: planned shifts, missed punches, late arrivals, and other exceptions that payroll staff need to review.
  • Overtime and work rules: rules for calculating hours under the employer’s actual policies and applicable pay arrangements. Confirm that the software can represent your rules rather than assuming a vendor’s general claim covers every case.
  • Job, line, or department codes: labor allocation when workers move among jobs or production areas, so attendance records can support job costing or labor reporting.
  • Payroll and operational data: transfer of approved time to payroll, and, where relevant, connection to ERP or manufacturing workflows.
  • Reporting and administration: review of hours, labor allocation, exceptions, and multiple locations.

Vendors describe different combinations of these functions: Fareclock lists scheduling, job costing, reporting, and payroll synchronization; TCP Software describes job codes, overtime, and timekeeping rules; Infor Factory Track includes time and attendance and labor data collection. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not independently verified product results. Fareclock manufacturing and warehousing, TCP Software manufacturing, and Infor Factory Track.

Three system approaches

Physical terminals with attendance software

Employees punch at fixed devices installed at entrances or other designated points. A terminal may use a badge, PIN, fingerprint, or another supported method. This can suit a facility where employees clock in at set locations, but the device is only one part of the system: confirm how its records reach the attendance software and payroll, and whether it fits the site’s conditions.

Cloud attendance software with kiosk or mobile punching

Some systems let employees enter time through a shared kiosk or mobile workflow rather than a dedicated clock at every point. That may offer flexibility across locations or work areas, but check that the permitted method matches your verification needs and workplace policies. Connectivity and device suitability also matter.

Manufacturing or ERP-connected labor tracking

A broader platform can place time and labor capture within manufacturing or ERP workflows. Infor describes Factory Track as a set of manufacturing automation modules that includes time and attendance. This approach may be relevant when labor data needs to connect closely to plant operations, but assess it against the systems you already run and the specific data flows you need.

How to compare systems

Comparison area Questions to resolve
Clocking method Will workers use fixed terminals, a kiosk, mobile devices, or a mix? What identity checks are available, and which are appropriate for your policies and sites?
Manufacturing labor detail Does the system record attendance only, or can workers assign time to jobs, lines, departments, or tasks as needed?
Schedules and rules Can it represent your shift patterns, overtime calculations, exceptions, and applicable agreements or payroll rules? Test real cases, including workers who change shifts or pay classifications.
Integration How does approved time reach your payroll system? Does it connect to your HR, ERP, or plant-floor systems, and what data must be mapped or reviewed?
Deployment fit Does the setup suit your number of sites, connectivity, clock locations, and device conditions?
Administration and reporting Can the appropriate managers review exceptions and labor allocations across departments or locations?

TCP describes a mix of clock options, fingerprint scanning, job codes, and timekeeping rules; Zebra describes time entry, labor tracking, payroll integration, and touchless options. Treat those pages as descriptions of offered functions, not proof of accuracy, savings, or superiority. Ask vendors to demonstrate the workflows using your own schedules, job codes, payroll rules, and exception cases. TCP Software manufacturing and Zebra Workcloud Timekeeping.

A practical selection process

  1. Map how time is recorded today. Identify clock locations, shift patterns, job or department changes, approval steps, and the exceptions payroll has to fix.
  2. Document your rules and integrations. List the overtime and pay rules the system must apply, plus the payroll, HR, ERP, or plant systems it must exchange data with.
  3. Choose the clocking model. Decide whether fixed terminals, kiosk or mobile punching, or a combination fits your workforce, verification needs, and site conditions.
  4. Test representative scenarios. Ask vendors to show a normal shift, a missed punch, overtime, a job transfer, and a payroll handoff using your intended configuration. Verify each result with the people responsible for payroll and operations.
  5. Check device and regional compatibility. Confirm that terminals, identity methods, software, integrations, and any relevant data-handling practices are suitable for each location. A biometric clock is a hardware category, not a guarantee that a particular device will work with your software or payroll.
  6. Plan for multiple sites and exceptions. Confirm how administrators will manage different schedules, locations, and review queues if your business has more than one facility.

What the published industry figures say

Workforce Software’s 2025 State of Manufacturing report says 72% of surveyed organizations planned investments in time-and-attendance systems and 76% prioritized scheduling modules. Those are findings attributed to that report, not universal market statistics; interpret them in light of the report’s surveyed population and methodology. Read the 2025 report.

What vendor pages can—and cannot—tell you

Product pages are useful for identifying features to evaluate. For example, OPTAS describes manufacturing time-tracking software, biotime describes manufacturing time clocks, and Zebra describes timekeeping functions. Those descriptions do not establish a product’s quality, accuracy, savings, or fit for a particular factory. Compare demonstrated workflows and confirmed integration details against your own requirements.

TCP Software’s statement that “Tracking time in manufacturing isn’t just clock in, clock out” captures the distinction between basic attendance and the wider labor workflow, but it is a vendor statement. TCP Software manufacturing.
