A construction time clock should reliably capture who worked, when, where, and on which job—even when a crew has poor cell service—and get approved hours into the right payroll workflow. Before choosing software, test offline punches, job and cost-code allocation, location rules, worker access, and payroll export at a representative jobsite. No single option is best for every crew.
What a construction time clock needs to handle
Construction crews work across changing jobsites, sometimes beyond reliable internet coverage. A suitable system should fit the way workers actually clock in, capture the job and relevant cost allocation, and give supervisors a clear path to review and correct time before payroll.
- Field access: Workers may use individual phones, a shared kiosk, a supervisor’s device for crew entry, or phone-in clocking. Choose a method that works for your crew, including employees without smartphones.
- Offline capture: Confirm what punches and related details can be recorded without a connection, how they sync later, and how the system handles conflicts or failed syncs.
- Job costing: Check whether workers select or are assigned the correct job, task, phase, and cost code. Find out who reviews changes and how corrections are recorded.
- Payroll handoff: Verify compatibility with your specific payroll or accounting product, pay rules, and the format in which approved time and cost codes transfer.
- Location behavior: Establish whether the system records a location at the punch, warns about or blocks an out-of-area punch, or checks location beyond clock-in and clock-out.
How the listed systems differ
The table summarizes capabilities described by each vendor, not results from an independent product test. Features and configurations can vary; confirm current behavior with the vendor before selecting a system.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| System | Field access and offline use | Location and job allocation | Payroll or accounting details stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| WorkMax TIME | Vendor describes offline clock-in and clock-out, with time syncing when service returns. | Vendor describes GPS location stamps, geofencing, task and project changes, and break and work-activity recording. | Vendor names FOUNDATION and QuickBooks integrations. |
| hh2 Punch Clock | Vendor describes phone punches, shared-kiosk use, supervisor crew entry, and offline sync. | Vendor describes GPS, geofencing, photo capture, and job and cost-code allocation. | Vendor describes accounting handoff; confirm your specific product and workflow. |
| OnTheClock | Vendor describes geofenced clock-ins; the cited page does not state offline behavior. | Vendor says location is checked at clock-in and clock-out, and describes job and cost-code tracking. | Vendor names QuickBooks, Gusto, ADP, and Paychex, and describes payroll-ready reports. |
| Chronotek Pro | Vendor describes phone-in clocking for employees without smartphones; the cited page does not state offline behavior. | Vendor describes jobsite geofences, optional NFC TimeTiles, job costing, alerts, and shift alerts. | Specific payroll integrations are not stated on the cited page. |
| CrewTracks | The cited page does not state field-access alternatives or offline behavior. | Vendor describes allocation to jobs, phases, or categories, with geofences configurable to require a punch inside a boundary, warn and allow a punch with a reason, or be disabled by job. It says location is checked at arrival and departure, not continuously. | Specific payroll integrations are not stated on the cited page. |
| Jarrison JT Clock Team | Vendor describes mobile team clocking and offline storage of punches with GPS locations until connectivity returns. | Vendor describes job costing and geofencing; an external USB fingerprint reader is optional. | Specific payroll integrations are not stated on the cited page. |
These are different product patterns, not a universal ranking. For example, a shared kiosk or supervisor-entry mode may matter more than individual smartphone access for one crew, while another business may prioritize an existing payroll connection. Product descriptions come from the vendors: WorkMax TIME, hh2 Punch Clock, OnTheClock, Chronotek Pro, CrewTracks, and Jarrison JT Clock Team.

Understand what location tracking actually does
“GPS” and “geofencing” do not guarantee the same behavior across systems. A location stamp can document where a punch occurred; a geofence can be configured to allow, warn, or restrict a punch; and those checks may occur only at clock-in and clock-out rather than throughout a shift.
For example, OnTheClock describes location checks at clock-in and clock-out. CrewTracks says its geofence checks arrival and departure, with require, warn-and-allow, or off settings by job. Chronotek describes jobsite geofences and optional NFC site taps. Ask the vendor what is recorded, when the check runs, what happens outside a boundary, and whether any location collection continues after a punch. Explain the chosen settings to workers before rollout.

Run a jobsite trial before committing
A short trial should test the workflow end to end, rather than merely confirm that an app opens or a punch can be submitted. Use a representative site, preferably one where connectivity is unreliable if that reflects your work.
- Test offline capture: Turn off or move beyond network coverage, make a punch, and check what the worker and supervisor can see. Restore service and verify that the punch syncs and retains the expected time and location details.
- Test allocation: Have a worker change jobs, tasks, phases, or cost codes as your operation requires. Confirm the correct options are available and that a supervisor can identify and review a misallocation.
- Test location rules: Try the expected clock-in and clock-out locations, then ask what the system does for a punch outside the geofence. Check whether the result is a record, warning, block, or another workflow.
- Test worker access: Trial the actual method crews will use—individual phones, kiosk, supervisor entry, or phone-in—and include workers who may not have smartphones.
- Test payroll export: Approve trial time and move it through the normal payroll or accounting handoff. Verify pay rules, job and cost-code details, and the correction process before relying on it for a pay run.
How to compare cost and kiosk options
Compare the total cost for your actual workforce and use case, including any minimum employee count, shared-device needs, or features required for your workflow. Prices are subject to change, so confirm a current quote directly with each vendor. Chronotek’s cited page states $19 per month plus $6 per employee per month, with a five-employee minimum; verify that price and terms before relying on them. A Workyard comparison discusses selection dimensions and multiple starting prices, but those figures should likewise be checked with vendors: Workyard comparison.

If a shared station suits the crew better than personal phones, an Android tablet for a construction time-clock kiosk is one category to consider. The software vendor should confirm compatible devices, operating system requirements, and any kiosk setup needs; the cited product information does not establish a specific tablet model, ruggedness standard, or mounting arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose by workflow, not by a feature checklist
Start with the crew’s real constraints: connectivity, worker access, job and cost-code structure, location expectations, and the payroll handoff. Shortlist systems that fit those requirements, then run the same field-to-payroll trial on each. Vendor feature pages can identify candidates, but they do not establish which system will perform best for your business.
