These instructions cover the TI-RSLK Basic Kit: prepare and solder its boards, assemble the chassis, wire the robot, then test it over USB before installing batteries. Allow about 3.5–6 hours, with soldering experience the main factor in the build time. The TI-RSLK MAX is a related, solderless edition, so its assembly details differ.
Basic Kit versus TI-RSLK MAX
Use the Basic Kit instructions only if you have the kit with the soldered-board workflow. The MAX is a separate, solderless edition; do not assume its parts or assembly steps match the Basic Kit. TI’s 2019 announcement priced the MAX kit at US$109 at that time and said it included the MSP432P401R LaunchPad and other assembly components. That is a historical price, not a current quote. TI identifies the MAX kit as TIRSLK-EVM in its lab materials. TI’s 2019 kit announcement · TI lab material
For teaching use, TI says the MAX curriculum includes more than 20 modules with lecture and lab videos. Kit completeness, current availability, and curriculum access are worth checking before choosing between editions. TI-RSLK MAX curriculum and kit information
Tools and preparation
Set aside roughly 3.5–6 hours for assembly; the workshop gives that range and says the time depends on soldering experience. Gather the parts and tools before starting so you can complete the soldering, mechanical assembly, and wiring stages without interrupting the build.

TI’s construction guide divides the work into soldering, assembly, and wiring. Keep the workspace clean, stable, and non-conductive, and observe normal ESD precautions. Follow TI’s electrical ratings and setup instructions; use insulated probe attachments and keep hair, clothing, jewelry, and hands clear of moving parts. The iron and freshly soldered pins can burn, and the knife is sharp. TI-RSLK construction guide · TI setup and safety instructions
1. Solder and prepare the boards
- Solder the 2×19 headers onto the MSP432P401R LaunchPad, taking care to keep them aligned.
- Fit the specified 1×2 and other headers to the motor board as shown in the construction guide.
- Use a precision knife to cut the three tiny motor-board traces indicated in the guide. Wear eye and hand protection and get assistance if you are not confident using the blade.
- Check each cut with an ohmmeter. The workshop specifies resistance above 1 kΩ between each pair of pads. If a reading does not meet that check, inspect the cut before proceeding.
2. Assemble the chassis
- Insert the battery tabs and secure the motor board to the chassis.
- Lock the motor clips fully into the chassis before inserting the motors. Incomplete engagement can prevent proper motor seating.
- Install the ball caster, fit the tires to the wheels, and attach the wheels to the motors.
- Attach all six bump-switch levers in the direction shown in the build diagrams.
- Mount the line sensor and attach the LaunchPad using the supplied standoffs or those provided with the workshop materials.
3. Wire the robot
Connect the bump switches, motor-control logic, motor power, LaunchPad power, and line-following sensor. Use the wiring diagrams rather than relying on wire color or memory: verify connector orientation before applying power. Route the sensor wires as straight as possible, since the workshop notes that some are only just long enough.

4. Bring up and test it without batteries
- Remove the batteries. Connect the LaunchPad to a computer with a MicroUSB cable and use TI’s browser/debug flow.
- Check all six bump switches individually.
- Check all eight light-bar line-sensor elements.
- Exercise the motor controls and confirm that each motor turns in the intended direction. If one runs backward, swap that motor’s two wires.
- After the sensor and motor checks pass, load the demonstration programs. In Energia, select the MSP432 board and the correct serial port.
Keeping batteries out during the initial USB checks gives you a chance to find wiring or orientation mistakes before running the robot from its battery supply. Do not proceed to battery-powered operation until the connectors and tests are satisfactory.

If you already have the chassis but lack its controller, the required board is an MSP-EXP432P401R LaunchPad configured with the TI-RSLK 2×19 and 1×2 headers. Pololu documented a configured board listing but marks it discontinued, so confirm availability and compatibility before planning a build around it. Pololu configured LaunchPad listing
