Thunderbird 115, released as “Supernova” on July 11, 2023, introduced a major desktop interface redesign rather than a new email protocol or service. Its central change is a Dynamic Unified Toolbar that adapts to the active workspace, while familiar options—including the three-pane layout, Table View, Quick Filter, and the traditional menu bar—remain available through customization.

What is Thunderbird 115 Supernova?

Supernova is the Thunderbird 115 release and the project’s visual and technical modernization of its desktop client. The launch article described it as a new era for Thunderbird and introduced a new logo. Thunderbird Product and Business Development Manager Ryan Sipes called it “the beginning of a new era for Thunderbird.”

Thunderbird 115.0 launched on July 11, 2023 as a direct download. Its release notes stated that it was not initially offered as an automatic upgrade from Thunderbird 102 or earlier, so users on those versions needed to download the new release when it became available for their platform.

These details describe the 115 Supernova release. Thunderbird has shipped newer versions since 2023, so anyone downloading Thunderbird today should check the current release requirements and notes separately.

The biggest change: one toolbar for every workspace

How the Dynamic Unified Toolbar works

Supernova places a single toolbar above the Tabs Bar. It is reused across Thunderbird’s main “Spaces”: Mail, Address Book, Calendar, Tasks, Chat, and Settings. The controls shown can change with the active Space, but the customization model stays consistent.

This replaces the older experience in which different areas of Thunderbird could expose more separate or context-specific controls. Switching from Mail to Calendar, for example, changes the actions available in the same toolbar area instead of moving you to an unrelated toolbar system.

Customizing the toolbar

Right-click the toolbar to open its customization controls. You can arrange items with drag-and-drop or use the keyboard:

  • Tab: move focus through toolbar items.
  • Arrow keys: move within the customization interface.
  • Enter: activate a selected item.
  • Delete: remove a selected toolbar item.
  • Alt plus an arrow key: reposition an item.

Because the toolbar follows the active Space, customization is most useful when you decide which actions you use repeatedly in Mail, Calendar, or another workspace and keep those actions easy to reach.

The Application Menu is flatter and easier to navigate

The redesigned three-line Application Menu (≡) reduces the number of nested menu layers. Mozilla’s support documentation describes navigation of no more than two submenu levels, while global options remain available from the main menu context. The menu is also keyboard-accessible, so common commands do not require precise mouse targeting.

The traditional menu bar was not removed. On Windows and Linux, press Alt to reveal it. On macOS, use the operating system’s menu bar. This gives users a second route to commands if the new Application Menu is not their preferred way to work.

Message lists now default to Card View

What changed in Vertical View

The message list was rebuilt with modern HTML technology. Its new header identifies the current folder, shows the message count, exposes Quick Filter, and provides display options.

In Vertical View, Supernova defaults to a compact, two-line Card View. Each message is presented as a card-like row rather than the dense, column-oriented list many Thunderbird 102 users remember.

Can you restore Table View?

Yes. Table View remains selectable through the display and customization controls. Choosing it restores the familiar row-and-column presentation, so adopting Supernova does not require accepting Card View permanently.

Address Book

Address Book gained a tabular view, bringing its presentation closer to the structured lists familiar from other desktop applications.

Quick Filter and density

Quick Filter is surfaced in the updated message-list header. The Density control offers three choices—Compact, Default, and Relaxed—so you can trade information density for spacing without replacing the overall interface.

Icons and three-pane layout

Buttons and icons were redrawn with a more consistent visual style. The classic three-pane layout remains part of Thunderbird, so Supernova changes the surrounding controls and presentation without removing that established arrangement.

Thunderbird 102 versus 115 Supernova

Area Thunderbird 102-era experience Thunderbird 115 Supernova
Toolbar model More separate or context-specific controls One Dynamic Unified Toolbar shared by Mail, Address Book, Calendar, Tasks, Chat, and Settings
Message list Table-style presentation was familiar to many users Card View is the Vertical View default; Table View remains selectable
Menus Traditional menu navigation with deeper nesting in places Simpler keyboard-accessible Application Menu with up to two submenu levels; traditional menu bar remains available
Calendar Earlier mini-month, grids, and toolbar Refreshed mini-month, day/week/month grids, toolbar, and blue-dot event/task markers
Address Book Earlier address-book presentation Tabular view added
Customization Existing toolbar and layout controls Unified right-click customization plus keyboard and drag-and-drop positioning
Overall appearance Older iconography and spacing Redesigned icons, buttons, and Compact, Default, or Relaxed density choices

Can you change Thunderbird 115 back to the old layout?

You cannot turn Supernova into an exact Thunderbird 102 interface with one “classic mode” switch. You can, however, restore several familiar behaviors:

  • Select Table View instead of the default Card View.
  • Keep using the three-pane layout.
  • Use the traditional menu bar—press Alt on Windows or Linux, or use the macOS menu bar.
  • Customize the Dynamic Unified Toolbar to put preferred commands in familiar positions.
  • Choose Compact density when you want tighter spacing.

These options soften the transition, but they do not remove the new toolbar architecture, refreshed icons, or redesigned workspace controls.

Supported platforms at the Thunderbird 115 launch

Thunderbird 115 Supernova was released for Windows, macOS, and Linux desktop systems. The 115.0 release notes listed these minimum platform baselines at launch:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Platform Requirement listed for Thunderbird 115.0
Windows Windows 7 or later
macOS macOS 10.12 or later
Linux GTK+ 3.14 or later

Those are launch-era requirements, not a guarantee for current Thunderbird releases. Check the release notes for the version you plan to install, particularly on an older operating system.

What existing Thunderbird users should expect

  1. Find commands in the shared toolbar: switch Spaces and watch the Dynamic Unified Toolbar adapt to the active workspace.
  2. Choose your message-list style: try Card View, or select Table View if columns and compact rows are more efficient for you.
  3. Rebuild your shortcuts: right-click the toolbar and use drag-and-drop or the keyboard controls to place frequently used actions.
  4. Use the menu route you prefer: start with the simplified Application Menu, or reveal the traditional menu bar with Alt on Windows and Linux.
  5. Adjust spacing: set Density to Compact, Default, or Relaxed based on how much information you want visible at once.
