A reversible electrochemical mirror (REM) can switch between a transparent state and a reflective one by depositing and dissolving silver. In 2014, researchers reported that its reflective state could last for up to two hours without external electrical power. That was a laboratory result, not a specification for a consumer product.
How does a reversible electrochemical mirror work?
The reported design places a thin, silver-containing electrolyte between two transparent electrode panes. Applying an electrical potential changes the silver at an electrode, switching the device between transparent and reflective states.
To make the mirror reflective
A reduction voltage deposits metallic silver onto an electrode, forming a reflective coating. The Royal Society of Chemistry and Chemistry World described this mechanism in their 2014 reports on the research.
To make it transparent
An oxidising potential dissolves the silver coating by turning the metal into ions. In this way, the mirror can be switched back from reflective to transparent.

Why the reflective state could persist
The team used an ionic liquid. Eunkyoung Kim, the research group leader at Yonsei University, explained that the liquid creates an electric double layer that repels anions from the metal surface, helping deposited silver remain in place without external electrical power. The researchers also modified the electrode surface with thiol groups to address ruptures in the silver coating during deposition. These details are reported explanations of the research mechanism, not independently verified specifications for a current device.
What did the 2014 result show?
The Royal Society of Chemistry and Chemistry World reported that the reflective state could persist for up to two hours without external electrical power. This describes a result reported for the research device in 2014; it is not a guarantee for a commercial mirror or a claim about how long a present-day product would hold its state.

Could switchable mirrors be used in smart windows?
The reports proposed smart windows as a possible application. A window that changes reflectivity could control how much light enters a building and potentially help reduce cooling needs by blocking sunlight. Kim also described redirecting light for illumination or heating, rather than simply blocking it.

These are potential uses, not demonstrated building-energy savings. The 2014 coverage does not establish a measured reduction in cooling costs, a market adoption figure, or a complete comparison with other window technologies.
What challenges remain?
Switching speed was identified as a limitation: Kim said REM switching was slower than that of other electrochromic devices, and faster switching remained a research challenge. A reflective state that can persist without power is useful in principle, but it does not by itself establish that the mirror responds quickly enough for a particular window or consumer use.

The cited reports describe a research device and possible applications, not a named retail mirror or a commercially available smart window using this specific approach. They do not provide a current commercialization update. A generic smart-glass product or ordinary household mirror should not be assumed to use this silver-deposition mechanism.
