Three built-in Windows shortcuts replace trips through menus and window controls. Windows+V brings back something you copied earlier, Windows+Z opens Snap layouts so you can place windows quickly, and Alt+Tab switches between open apps. Each one is documented by Microsoft, and each has a setup step or limit worth knowing before you rely on it.

These three were chosen for everyday usefulness. They are not an official Microsoft ranking of shortcuts. Microsoft describes keyboard shortcuts as keys or key combinations that provide an alternative way to do something you would typically do with a mouse. Microsoft Support: Keyboard shortcuts in Windows

Quick comparison

Shortcut Task it replaces Setup needed Scope notes
Windows+V Scrolling back to, or retyping, something you copied earlier First use: press the shortcut and choose Turn on History is cleared on restart except pinned items; cloud sync is optional
Windows+Z Dragging windows to the edges or corners of the screen by hand None for the basic layout menu; hover behavior is configurable Layouts shown can depend on the device and settings
Alt+Tab Clicking through the taskbar or minimizing windows to find an app None Individual apps can handle keys differently in their own windows

Windows+V: reuse copied content without copying it again

Windows+V opens clipboard history, a list of recent items you have copied. It is most useful when you need a phrase, address, or snippet you copied a few steps earlier and no longer have on the clipboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning it on the first time

  1. Copy at least one item, then press Windows+V.
  2. Select Turn on when the prompt appears.
  3. Press Windows+V again whenever you want to pick an earlier item from the list.

Your history only contains items copied after clipboard history is turned on. Things copied before that are not retrievable this way.

Limits to plan around

  • 25 entries. Microsoft states that clipboard history holds up to 25 copied entries. Older unpinned entries are removed as new ones are added. The reviewed Microsoft page does not state the year this limit was set.
  • 4 MB per item. Microsoft documents a 4 MB per-item limit. Text, HTML, and bitmap formats are supported.
  • Restart clears it. The history is cleared on restart, except for items you have pinned. If something must survive a reboot, pin it.
  • Sync is optional. Clipboard items can sync across devices through clipboard settings (in Windows 11, Settings > System > Clipboard). Sync depends on the same Microsoft or work account being used on each device, and it is not on by default.

Microsoft’s clipboard guide is the primary reference for these details: Microsoft Support: Using the clipboard.

Windows+Z: place windows with Snap layouts

Windows+Z opens the Snap layouts menu. Instead of dragging a window to a screen edge and resizing it, you pick a layout and click the zone where the window should go. Microsoft’s shortcut reference lists Windows+Z for this action.

Settings that change the behavior

Snap is configurable. In Windows 11, the relevant options are under Settings > System > Multitasking. Among them are whether layouts appear when you hover over a window’s maximize button, and how Snap Assist and Snap groups behave. Microsoft’s guide to these features is here: Microsoft Support: Snap your windows.

  2. Tap Tab until the window you want is highlighted.
  3. Release Alt to switch to it.

This is the quickest way to return to the window you were just using, since one press moves to the previous window. Microsoft’s keyboard tips describe the same behavior: Microsoft Support: Windows keyboard tips and tricks.

Scope and compatibility

  • Windows versions. Microsoft’s shortcut and clipboard pages cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Windows 10 support status. Microsoft’s pages state that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That affects security updates and support coverage, not whether these shortcuts still work on a machine that is running it.
  • App differences. The shortcut list gives Windows’ default behavior. An individual application can change how a shortcut works inside its own window.

Which one to try first

If you often paste the same text or retype something you copied earlier, start with Windows+V and turn it on today. If you regularly juggle two or three windows side by side, Windows+Z saves the most drag-and-resize steps. Alt+Tab needs no setup, so it is the easiest to adopt immediately and the one to practice first.
