1. Where should you start? Practice before public-match pressure
Dota 2 is free to play, and Valve says all heroes and core content are available to players. Its Steam listing points newcomers to co-op games against bots and Hero Demo as ways to learn and practice: Dota 2 on Steam.
Use Hero Demo to get comfortable moving, controlling the camera, activating abilities, and finding your way around the shop. Then repeat those basics in a bot match, where you can practice against opponents without the same pressure as a public match. At first, measure progress by whether you can perform a few actions more deliberately—not just by whether you win.
Valve’s March 2021 new-player announcement described a broader set of learning features, including objectives, a glossary, New Player Mode, more forgiving bots, guided shop support, and coaching. That is a historical description, not a guarantee that every feature or menu path is unchanged in the current client. Check the live client for the learning tools available to you.

2. How many heroes should you learn at first?
Begin with one hero you can explain and keep one backup. A small pool gives you more chances to learn the controls and notice what is happening in a match, instead of repeatedly starting from zero with a different set of abilities. Once basic controls no longer occupy all your attention, you can try more heroes.
There is no universally easiest hero or role: what feels readable depends on the current patch, your preferences, and whether you are playing with friends. Valve notes that heroes can fill multiple roles, so treat a role as a useful job for a particular game—not a permanent identity. Browse the current official hero selection and use Hero Demo to see whether a hero’s abilities make sense to you.

Give each game one learning focus
Trying to improve everything at once makes it hard to tell what you learned. Pick one specific focus for a game, such as staying near your lane, watching your health and mana, practicing last hits, or choosing an item to address a problem you can name. Current item builds and exact values can change with patches, so use the live client rather than treating a static build as timeless advice.
Afterward, review one moment that relates to your focus. A single timestamp is enough to ask what you noticed, what you missed, and what you could try next time.

3. What should you watch on the minimap?
Check the minimap between safe actions. Look for enemies who have disappeared, allies close enough to help, lanes that are pushed, and where your team gathers after a fight or objective. The point is not to track everything perfectly; it is to avoid making your next move without considering what is happening around it.
Before moving, ask three questions:
- What useful job is nearby?
- What could punish me if I go there?
- What will I do next if I finish that job?
A useful job might be farming safely, helping a nearby ally, contributing to vision or map control, or regrouping with the team. Kills, farm, levels, items, vision, and towers matter because they can help the team work toward the final objective; none is the goal by itself. Keep your job simple and responsive to the match rather than assuming every hero has one fixed role.
