A 2026 research platform called TrioAlert uses fluorescence to detect three hazardous chemicals: sulfur mustard, sarin and cyanide. The study reports different color or wavelength changes for each target and tests the sensor in solutions and on loaded strips. It also demonstrates smartphone analysis of those strips—but the available reporting does not establish field testing or a commercially available detector.
Which agents does TrioAlert detect?
The fluorescent sensing platform targets three agents from different categories: sulfur mustard, a blister agent; sarin, a G-type nerve agent; and cyanide, a blood agent. The work was reported by Liu and colleagues in Nature Communications in 2026. Read the paper.
The OPCW’s Online Scheduled Chemicals Database is the official reference for Chemical Weapons Convention scheduled-chemical identification. The database says its 2026 edition supersedes previous versions; it does not validate TrioAlert.
How does the sensor distinguish them?
TrioAlert combines different chemical recognition pathways in a fluorescent sensing design. The paper describes an imidazole moiety for recognizing sulfur mustard and sarin, while cyanide is detected through a reaction at the 4-position of a coumarin fluorophore.

The optical responses are not identical. Sulfur mustard and sarin quench fluorescence and shift the observed color from yellow toward red. Cyanide changes the wavelength and causes the signal to fade toward colorless. These are study readouts, not a field-use identification protocol.
What response times and detection limits did the study report?
The paper reports different response times and limits depending on both the target and the measurement format. Solution limits and visual test-strip limits should not be compared as though they were measured in the same way.

The study demonstrates smartphone-based qualitative and quantitative analysis of TrioAlert-loaded test strips. In that context, the phone analyzes the strip’s sensor response; the demonstration does not establish that a smartphone on its own detects an agent, or that the combination has been validated for field deployment.

- 🐯WHERE IS IT USED? The application range of Air Formaldehyde Test Kit is very wide, which can meet various testing needs. such as: Residential, Business, Hotel, Hospital, School, Furniture, Auto, Etc.
- 🦁HOW MUCH TO PURCHASE? The Formaldehyde Test Kit can only be used once. So you need to purchase one for each room (or auto), for example, if you need to test 3 rooms, then you need to purchase 3, and so on.
- 🦊HOW TO USE IT? Before the test close the room for 1 to 3 hours with all ventilation , air purifiers , humidifiers and air conditioning turned off .Then just follow the 6 steps outlined in the included manual.
- 🐮WHAT IS THE SAFETY LIMIT? Multiple countries and organizations have stipulated that indoor formaldehyde concentration should not exceed 0.10 mg/m3. So our test results need to be lower than this value in order to better ensure our family's health.
- 🐶HOW TO GET HELP? When Formaldehyde levels are low, results may be difficult to read. If you need help, reach out to our friendly team here or via email. We can also improve the formaldehyde problem through products such as ventilation, air purifiers, and formaldehyde sprays.
The authors also report stable performance in natural environmental matrices and at various temperatures. These are results reported within the study, not evidence of independent field performance.
Has TrioAlert been tested in the field or made available as a product?
The sources reviewed do not establish field testing. Chemistry World’s report on the study, published 26 May 2026, says the sensor had not yet been tested in the field. Read the report.

- Test Air Quality: Designed to help keep your family safe, our DIY kit determines if Formaldehyde Gas (HCHO) is in your home. Suitable for areas up to 270 square ft, use only one kit per room. To inspect the whole house, use one kit per room.
- Fast, Reliable Results: To test, just follow the 6 steps outlined in the included manual. Keep air temperature and humidity unchanged while testing. You'll have visual results in 30-50 minutes. This test should only be used for your home or office.
- For Better Readings: Turn off ventilation, air purifiers and anything that may affect the air for at least 8 hours prior to testing. Store unused kits in a dry, dark place. The expiration is 2 years from the production date printed on the package.
- Trusted Formula: Our chemical solution is based on international standards. Keep away from children. If contact with skin or eyes occurs, rinse with water. Includes absorption box, absorbent, color developer, colorimetric card and user manual.
- Full Customer Support: When Formaldehyde levels are low, results may be difficult to read. If you need help, reach out to our friendly team here or via email. If Formaldehyde is present, we recommend an air purifier or any other removal technology.
The paper describes a research sensor and loaded test strips, but does not identify a retail model or commercially available consumable. TrioAlert should therefore be understood as a research platform, not as a verified commercial detector.

What do the biological demonstrations and safety warnings mean?
The paper reports imaging in live cells and mouse models. Those experiments show research applications; they do not establish consumer readiness or safe use outside controlled research settings.

The authors state that the agents used are highly toxic and that work requires strict controls, including a certified fume hood or glovebox and appropriate protective equipment. They write: “Sulfur mustard, sarin, soman, potassium cyanide, VX, Lewisite, and BZ are highly toxic chemical warfare agents and present an extreme hazard.” This is a research-safety warning, not an invitation to handle or test these substances.
