Three Class 9 students drowned at Rushikonda beach in Visakhapatnam on Friday, October 2, 2026, during the Gandhi Jayanti school holiday. According to the police account reported by Hindustan Times, a sudden wave and current swept three boys from reportedly knee-deep water into deeper water. One of the four boys who entered the sea reached shore.
What happened at Rushikonda beach?
The incident was reported near IT Park Junction on Bheemili beach road, close to Rushikonda beach. Hindustan Times reported that six boys, all around 14 and residents of Madhurawada, arrived at about 3 p.m. on October 2. Four went into the water while two stayed on shore.
The newspaper identified the students who died as Pilla Prashanth, Sattaruvu Suryaprakash and Sabbavarapu Ritesh. These names and details are attributed to the newspaper’s report.
How did the boys get swept out?
In the police account quoted by Hindustan Times, the four boys were reportedly standing in knee-deep water when a large wave struck. One made it back to shore; the other three were swept into deeper water by the current. The report does not provide further detail about the wave or sea conditions.

How were the students found?
Coast Guard personnel, including a helicopter, Marine Police, Pothinamallayyapalem police, lifeguards and local fishermen took part in the search. Prashanth’s body was recovered on Friday evening. The other two students’ bodies were found on the beach early Saturday morning. The report said City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi monitored the operation.

What did the government announce?
The state government ordered an inquiry and said it intended to issue guidelines for schools and coaching institutes conducting study tours, with a focus on student safety and supervision. As of the Hindustan Times report on October 3, the guidelines were prospective: no publication date or final contents had been specified.
