USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed data speed or charging capability. The tag identifies a cable; it does not test, certify, or change it.
Why USB-C cables are hard to tell apart
Two cables can use the same reversible USB-C connector yet support different data rates and power levels. Those are separate capabilities: a cable’s charging rating does not tell you its data rate, and its data rate does not establish how much power it can carry. USB-IF describes Type-C as a reversible connector with scalable power and performance; the connector itself is not a promise of one particular combination.
Before marking a cable, establish its capabilities from its packaging, order details, or the manufacturer’s specifications. If those are unavailable, Tim Brookes’s How-To Geek article suggests inspection tools including USB Device Tree Viewer for Windows, WhatCable for Mac, and usbeehive for Linux. Those suggestions are not a guarantee that a tool can identify every cable or that it has been independently tested for this article.
Check the device’s actual requirements too. A useful label records what the cable supports; it does not establish whether the cable, charger, and connected devices are compatible as a complete setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the 3D-printed label does
The print is a small reusable tag with editable text—not a cable saver, strain relief, or performance upgrade. Customize its text field to record the information that matters to you, such as power capability and data rate. Brookes’s practical advice is: “Once you’ve tested a cable, print a label and file it away.” Batch-printing several labels can reduce filament waste.
USB-IF’s compliance guidance identifies 60W or 240W power-capability labels for applicable USB-C-to-USB-C cable categories. These are official power markings, not a complete description of data capability. A tag’s custom color or added text should not be confused with USB-IF labeling.

Choose a label scheme you can read consistently
Brookes uses color to distinguish data-rate examples. His mapping is a personal convention, not an industry standard, and it does not necessarily cover every cable. The speeds below are the figures in his example scheme:
| Example cable marking | Brookes’s color | Example data rate |
|---|---|---|
| USB 2.0 | Orange | 480 Mbps |
| USB 3.0 | Blue | 5 Gbps |
| USB 3.1 | Blue and gray | 10 Gbps |
| USB 3.2 | Gray | 20 Gbps |
For a scheme that remains useful when colors are hard to distinguish, put the capability in text as well. Record data and power separately—for example, “20 Gbps” and “240W” only when those capabilities have been verified for that cable. Do not infer one from the other, and do not copy a rating from a different cable in the same box.

Pick the labeling method that fits your setup
| Method | Readability and permanence | Reuse and customization | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Handwritten note | Depends on writing size and the marking surface; can fade or smudge. | Quick to customize; usually not reusable. | A fast, no-equipment label. |
| Tape with a written mark | Can be easy to read, but may peel or wear. | Easy to customize; replacement is simple. | A low-cost option when you want a visible flag. |
| 3D-printed tag | Can provide a dedicated text or color marker; legibility depends on the design and print. | A reusable design can be customized and batch-printed. | People who already have access to a 3D printer and want repeatable tags. |
You do not need a printer to solve the identification problem. Use tape or a handwritten label if that is clearer or easier; filament is only relevant if you already have printer access or can use one conveniently. The article does not establish a particular printer, filament type, or label design as best.
How to put the system into practice
- Identify the cable. Check its packaging, purchase record, or manufacturer specification. If needed, consult an inspection tool, while treating its result as something to verify rather than an automatic certification.
- Record power and data separately. Use only capabilities you have established, and note any official power marking without treating it as a data-rate label.
- Choose a consistent format. Put the key information in readable text; use color as an additional cue, not the only cue.
- Attach the label where it remains visible. Make sure it does not obscure a cable’s existing rating or interfere with connecting it.
- Keep the key with the cables. File away the label convention or use the same wording each time so the markings remain meaningful later.
