ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is the best starting point if you want one no-subscription office suite on Linux, macOS, and Windows while regularly exchanging DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX files with Microsoft 365 users. It includes document, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and PDF tools in a familiar desktop workflow. Its Microsoft-format compatibility is a vendor claim rather than an independent benchmark, so test your own files before moving a critical workflow.
Why ONLYOFFICE is the practical Microsoft 365 replacement
ONLYOFFICE’s official desktop description says it provides “all the tools you need to work with text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, fillable forms, and PDF files on Windows, Linux, and macOS.” Its home-use materials position the suite as a Microsoft Office replacement, list DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX compatibility, and offer free desktop apps alongside optional paid plans.
That combination matters when your household or team uses different operating systems. You can install the same general suite on a Linux PC, a Mac, and a Windows computer instead of teaching everyone a different interface. The familiar document, spreadsheet, and presentation model also reduces friction when opening files created in Microsoft 365.
Compatibility statements come from the vendors. No independent file-conversion test establishes that every complex workbook, presentation, macro, font, or layout will survive a round trip. Before switching, open representative files, edit them, save them, and reopen them in Microsoft 365 (or have a colleague do so).

How the main free alternatives differ
| Suite | Desktop platforms | Included tools | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors | Windows, Linux, macOS | Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, fillable forms, PDF tools | Users who prioritize a Microsoft-like workflow and Microsoft-format exchange | High compatibility is an official vendor claim; verify complex files and collaboration needs |
| LibreOffice | Windows, macOS, Linux | Broad office suite with documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, diagrams, and extensions | Users who put open source, privacy, and feature breadth first | Microsoft-format compatibility is stated by the project; test layout, fonts, and macros yourself |
| FreeOffice | Windows, Mac, Linux | TextMaker, PlanMaker, Presentations | Users wanting a lightweight, conventional Office-style interface | “Always free” availability is a SoftMaker statement; cloud and collaboration requirements may differ |
Choose by the four decisions that actually matter
1. Microsoft-format fidelity
If your daily work is mostly DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX, start with ONLYOFFICE and run a representative-file check. Pay special attention to spreadsheets with formulas, external links, pivot tables, charts, and macros; presentations with custom fonts, animations, and embedded media; and documents containing tracked changes or unusual page layouts. A file opening successfully is not the same as a perfect round trip.
2. Open-source and privacy priorities
LibreOffice is described by The Document Foundation as “a powerful, free and private office suite.” It is open source and provides Windows, macOS, and Linux distribution guidance. Choose it when inspectable software, private local work, and avoiding subscription software outweigh having the closest possible Microsoft-style experience. A download-page snapshot identified LibreOffice 25.2.4 in 2026; check the current project page because version numbers change.
Rank #2
- [Ideal for One Person] — With a one-time purchase of Microsoft Office Home & Business 2024, you can create, organize, and get things done.
- [Classic Office Apps] — Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote.
- [Desktop Only & Customer Support] — To install and use on one PC or Mac, on desktop only. Microsoft 365 has your back with readily available technical support through chat or phone.
3. Feature breadth
ONLYOFFICE covers the core document, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and PDF tasks. LibreOffice offers a wider collection that also includes database, diagram, and extension capabilities. FreeOffice concentrates on its three main applications: TextMaker, PlanMaker, and Presentations. Match the suite to the work you actually perform rather than choosing from feature counts alone.

Desktop editors are primarily for local work. If you need simultaneous editing, organizational sharing, browser access, identity management, or a specific cloud service, verify those requirements separately. The free desktop application and any online or paid plan can have different capabilities, limits, and account requirements.

A safe migration checklist
- Collect real files. Select several recent DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files, including your most complicated examples, plus any templates and macro-enabled files.
- Install the candidate on each operating system. Use the suite’s current official download or distribution guidance for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Keep Microsoft 365 available during evaluation.
- Inspect before editing. Compare page breaks, fonts, headers, images, formulas, charts, speaker notes, animations, and print previews.
- Perform a round trip. Edit each file, save it in its original Microsoft format, reopen it in Microsoft 365, and check for changed values, missing objects, or altered layout.
- Test automation. Run required macros or scripts in a copy. A compatibility claim does not guarantee that VBA or other automation will behave identically.
- Confirm teamwork. Reproduce your real sharing and review process, including comments, tracked changes, simultaneous editing, and cloud storage, before removing the subscription.
- Keep an exit path. Preserve original files and document which suite and version created each production file until the trial period is complete.
When each choice makes sense
Pick ONLYOFFICE first when
- You move frequently between Linux, macOS, and Windows.
- Microsoft-format exchange is more important than open-source licensing.
- You want documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, and PDF work in one desktop package.
Pick LibreOffice when
- Open source and privacy are primary requirements.
- You need broader built-in tools, databases, diagrams, or extensions.
- You are comfortable validating Microsoft-format files rather than assuming perfect fidelity.
Pick FreeOffice when
- You prefer a conventional Office-style interface.
- Your needs center on word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.
- You want a lightweight free option across Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Can you replace Microsoft 365 without paying a subscription?
Yes, for offline document, spreadsheet, and presentation work, a free desktop suite can remove the subscription from your personal workflow. The decision is less certain when you depend on advanced macros, exact corporate templates, real-time co-authoring, browser-only features, or tightly integrated cloud administration. Test those dependencies first; otherwise, ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors is the most practical first install for a cross-platform Microsoft-format workflow, with LibreOffice and FreeOffice serving different priorities.
