The app most likely behind that claim is Blower by Qneo. Its US App Store listing says sound from the iPhone’s speaker creates airflow at the speaker opening, and its BLOW mode is intended to affect candle and lighter flames. That is the developer’s description—not an independently measured test—and the phone is not described as containing a fan.
What Blower is actually doing
Blower plays specially designed audio through the device speaker. Qneo says users can feel air moving from the speaker opening and presents that output as a way to blow out nearby candle or lighter flames. In other words, the claimed effect comes from speaker-generated sound and air movement, not from the app detecting your breath through the microphone.
The listing includes several modes:
- BLOW: intended to affect candle and lighter flames.
- BEAT: makes flames react to music or voice.
- GUN: makes flames shiver.
- TUNER: adjusts the app’s output.
Neither the listing nor the available evidence establishes a measured airflow rate, a guaranteed result, or consistent performance across iPhone models. Treat the effect as a clever speaker-output experiment rather than a substitute for ordinary breath.
How to try it
- Open Blower and select BLOW.
- Remove a case if it covers or restricts the speaker opening.
- Set the volume to maximum, following the app listing’s instruction.
- Use the built-in tuner to adjust the output.
- Keep the speaker opening clear of dust.
- Place the phone near, rather than in, the flame and stop immediately if the device becomes hot or the flame moves toward it.
Qneo’s own warning is explicit: “When blowing out candles, don’t burn your device!” The instructions above are developer guidance, not controlled safety advice. A real flame can damage a phone, and a case, speaker design, volume limit, or phone position can change the result.

Blower versus “blow out the candle” apps
Several similarly named apps create a virtual birthday-candle experience instead of moving air. They use the microphone to detect how loudly you blow, then animate a flame or trigger music and applause.
| App | What its listing describes | Physical flame? |
|---|---|---|
| Blower (Qneo) | Speaker output and a BLOW mode intended to affect nearby flames | Claims to affect a real flame |
| Blow Candle : Happy Birthday | Microphone-level detection, with music and applause | No; simulated celebration |
| Blow Birthday Candle | Microphone response to how hard you blow, with adjustable sensitivity and cake options | No; simulated celebration |
Thus, an app that reacts when you blow into the phone is not necessarily the app described by the headline. Blower is the likely match because its listing specifically discusses speaker airflow and real candle flames.

What the App Store listing says today
The reviewed US App Store page identifies Qneo as the developer, displays a $1.99 price, and lists support for iPhone, iPad, and iMessage. It also shows a 4.5 rating from about 1.4K ratings. Prices, ratings, availability, and device support can change by storefront and over time, so verify the current US listing before downloading.
The visible version history includes version 5.0.1 dated April 4, 2019. That date matters: the feature description should not be read as a recently published engineering specification or as proof that every current iPhone produces the same effect.

Is it safe to use around birthday candles?
- Keep the flame away from the phone, ports, case, and screen.
- Do not hold the phone over a cake where wax, heat, or ash can reach it.
- Use the lowest-risk setup possible and have a normal way to extinguish the candle.
- Stop if the phone heats up, the flame leans toward the device, or the speaker sounds distorted.
- Never assume that a successful demonstration makes the method safe for every phone or candle.
For a party, the practical choice is still to use normal breath or a conventional candle snuffer and treat Blower as an optional novelty. The listing does not establish reliable operation with particular candle sizes, brands, or distances.

Blower is the likely iOS app behind the “phone blows out birthday candles” claim. According to Qneo’s listing, it uses speaker-generated sound and airflow in BLOW mode; it is not a microphone-based breath detector and not a built-in fan. It may work as a novelty, but the effect has not been independently measured here, and an open flame should never be brought close enough to risk the phone.
