Switching from Windows 11 to Linux Mint means changing operating systems, not installing a Windows-style makeover. Mint’s Cinnamon desktop—the project’s most popular edition—has a familiar layout, but Windows apps, device support, software installation, updates and troubleshooting work differently. Before replacing Windows, check your essential apps, games and hardware, then try Mint from a live USB.

What changes in everyday use?

Linux Mint is a Linux operating system with its own desktop, software ecosystem and support documentation. Cinnamon is the most popular desktop edition; MATE and Xfce are also available. These are interface choices, not guaranteed performance upgrades. A familiar-looking menu or taskbar does not mean a Windows program will run or a peripheral will work.

Apps and software

For each app you rely on, check whether its developer offers a Linux version or whether an alternative supports the same tasks and file formats. If a workflow depends on a Windows-only program, do not assume it will work on Mint. Confirm compatibility for the specific app and workflow before switching.

Games and devices

Game compatibility can depend on the exact title and its requirements, including anti-cheat software. Device support can likewise vary by model: check printers, scanners, webcams, fingerprint readers, audio interfaces and any specialist equipment you use. The available documentation does not establish blanket compatibility for games or peripherals.

Settings, updates and troubleshooting

Mint uses Linux conventions for installing software, managing settings and solving problems, so expect a learning curve even if Cinnamon looks familiar. Mint’s LTS releases receive five years of support. The official releases page lists Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena) as supported until April 2029; confirm the current release and its notes on the Linux Mint releases page before installing. Keep the system updated and review release notes for known issues.

How do the hardware requirements compare?

Windows 11 eligibility and Mint’s published minimum requirements are different measures. Microsoft lists TPM 2.0 and UEFI/Secure Boot capability among Windows 11 requirements. Mint’s FAQ lists a 64-bit CPU, 2 GB of RAM, 20 GB of disk space and a 1024×768 display as minimum requirements. Those Mint figures are not a performance recommendation or a promise that every component will work well. Check the current Windows 11 requirements and Linux Mint FAQ for the relevant release and device.

Which system fits your needs?

Consideration Windows 11 Linux Mint
Required apps Check that your required Windows applications and workflows are supported on your edition. Check for a Linux version or a suitable alternative; do not assume Windows-only software will work.
Games and peripherals Verify support for the exact games and devices you use. Verify the same items for your exact hardware and Mint release; compatibility is not guaranteed.
Hardware eligibility Microsoft lists requirements including TPM 2.0 and UEFI/Secure Boot capability. Published minimums include a 64-bit CPU, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB disk space and 1024×768 display; minimums do not establish good performance or component support.
Desktop options Uses the Windows desktop environment. Cinnamon is the most popular edition; MATE and Xfce are other choices.
Support Check Microsoft’s current support information for your Windows edition. LTS releases receive five years of support. Mint 22.3 is listed as supported until April 2029.
Trying before installing Your existing installation remains available unless you change it. A live USB session lets you test basic operation without immediately replacing Windows; it cannot guarantee every workload will work after installation.

What should you check before switching?

Make a short list of things you cannot afford to lose or break. Verify each item against the exact Mint release and your computer model.

How can you try Mint without replacing Windows?

Linux Mint’s official installation guide explains how to create bootable media and start a live session. Use that session to check basic operation and try your normal tasks. It is a practical first test, not proof that every component or workload will work after installation.

Test the live session

  1. Follow Mint’s current installation guide to create bootable media and start the live session.
  2. Check whether essential hardware works, including Wi-Fi, sound, display, input devices and any peripherals you brought to the test.
  3. Try your important workflows with the apps or alternatives you expect to use. A basic desktop test cannot settle compatibility for every app or game.

Consider dual boot only if you are comfortable with partitioning

A dual-boot setup keeps Windows available as an option, but installing another operating system involves changing partitions and boot configuration. Back up personal files before making changes. Mint’s multiboot guide says it can detect other operating systems and recommends installing Windows before Linux Mint for a dual-boot setup. Follow the current instructions carefully; keeping Windows installed is not a substitute for a backup.

When is switching a sensible choice?

Mint is worth trying if your essential software, games and devices are supported and you are comfortable learning different ways to install software, manage settings and troubleshoot. If a must-have workflow depends on Windows, keep access to Windows until you have verified a workable replacement. A live session can help you test first; replacing an operating system before checking your actual needs is an unnecessary gamble.
