The most useful Android shortcuts are built-in controls you can reach with a swipe, a double press, or a settings toggle, and they save repeated trips through menus. The six below cover quick toggles, a back-tap gesture, alert recovery, camera access, accessibility tools, and navigation style. Some are Pixel features and are labelled that way. Menu names and availability differ between phone makers and Android versions, and the Pixel setup guide used here shows screens from Android 14, so check the labels on your own phone.
Quick reference
| Shortcut | What it does | Where it is documented | Availability | Setup effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Settings tiles | Toggle settings from the top panel; some tiles open a fuller settings page | Android Open Source Project tile documentation; Google Pixel setup guide | Android concept; the tiles offered depend on device and version | Low |
| Quick Tap | Two taps on the back run an assigned action | Google Pixel setup guide | Pixel 4a (5G) and later, per the guide | Low |
| Notification History and snoozing | Recovers dismissed alerts; defers an alert to later | Google Pixel setup guide | Pixel instructions; not stated for other brands | Low |
| Camera from the power button | Double-press opens the camera; twist twice to switch cameras | Google Pixel setup guide | Pixel instructions; not stated for other brands | Low |
| Accessibility shortcut | Starts an accessibility tool such as TalkBack or Magnification | Google Android Accessibility Help | Trigger options vary by navigation mode, device and Android version; some steps need Android 12 or later | Medium |
| Navigation style | Chooses gesture or three-button navigation | Google Pixel setup guide | Pixel setting; wording varies by version | Low |
The six shortcuts
1. Customize Quick Settings
Quick Settings is the panel you open from the top of the screen. Its tiles work as toggles for settings such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Do Not Disturb. The Android Open Source Project describes tiles as quick toggles, and some can open a more detailed settings page, which is the part that saves the most time. The Android Quick Settings tile documentation explains how the system defines these tiles.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Open the expanded panel and tap the edit control.
- Drag the tiles you use most to the first positions, then add or remove supported tiles.
- Exit the editor when you are done.
Put the two or three toggles you change every day on the first screen of the panel. The set of tiles you can add depends on your phone, so a tile you want may not be offered.
2. Set up Quick Tap (Pixel)
Quick Tap is a Pixel feature. On Pixel 4a (5G) and later, a double tap on the back of the phone can trigger an action such as taking a screenshot, controlling media playback, showing notifications, or opening an app. It is not a universal Android gesture, so if your phone is from another brand, look for a manufacturer equivalent rather than assuming this one exists.

- Open Settings and search for Quick Tap.
- Choose the action you want from the supported list.
Because the trigger is a tap on the back, a firm bump in a bag or pocket can set it off. Turning the feature off or changing its action is easy if that happens.
3. Turn on Notification History and snoozing (Pixel)
Google’s Pixel setup guide points to Settings > Notifications for two related features. Notification History lets you recover an alert you dismissed or missed. Snoozing does something different: it hides an alert for now and brings it back later. Use history when you have already lost something, and snooze when you want to deal with it later. The steps are documented for Pixel, and the cited guide does not establish the same menu on every brand.

4. Open the camera with the power button (Pixel)
The Pixel setup guide says a double press of the power button opens the camera. After the camera app is open, twisting the phone twice switches between cameras. Both gestures are documented for Pixel only. Other Android models may use a different gesture, or none at all, so check your phone’s gesture settings before relying on it.
5. Assign an accessibility shortcut
Google’s Android Accessibility Help explains how to assign a shortcut to an accessibility app, such as TalkBack or Magnification, so you can start it without digging through settings. Depending on the phone, the trigger can be the accessibility button, pressing and holding both volume keys, a gesture, or a tile in Quick Settings. The options depend on your navigation mode, device, and Android version, and some steps work only on Android 12 and later.

Choose the trigger that you are least likely to press by accident. Holding both volume keys is hard to trigger by mistake, while a button tap or gesture may be more convenient if you use the feature often.
6. Choose gesture or three-button navigation
Pixel lets you pick between gesture navigation and three-button navigation in Settings. Gesture navigation gives you more screen space, while three-button navigation keeps Back, Home, and Recents as fixed buttons. Which one feels faster is a personal preference, and neither mode is faster for everyone. The Pixel guide notes that its steps can vary by Android version, so the wording of the option on your phone may differ.

Where to start
- Start with Quick Settings if you change the same two or three toggles every day.
- Turn on Notification History if you sometimes dismiss an alert and then need it back.
- Try Quick Tap or the power-button camera if you have a Pixel 4a (5G) or later.
- Set up an accessibility shortcut if you rely on TalkBack or Magnification.
- Test gesture and three-button navigation for a few days before you commit to one.
Multitasking is a different case
Android supports split-screen multitasking, but how it is launched depends on the launcher your phone uses. The Android split-screen documentation describes the platform behavior rather than a single shortcut you can rely on everywhere. Google announced desktop windowing for compatible large-screen devices in its Android 16 announcement, published June 10, 2025, with a rollout planned for later that year. Check your device’s current release notes before assuming the feature is available to you.
