If you remove the processor or heatsink from a Xeon Skylake system, replace the thermal interface material (TIM) before reinstalling it. Clean the old material from the integrated heat spreader (IHS), apply fresh CPU thermal paste at the center unless the cooler already has TIM pre-applied, and follow the instructions for your exact processor, socket, and cooler.
Why Xeon Skylake does not identify one application method
“Xeon Skylake” covers more than one processor and does not, by itself, identify the socket, motherboard, or cooler. Intel’s general Xeon TIM guidance is useful for routine maintenance, but it is not a universal mounting procedure. Use the documentation for your specific system and cooler for socket-specific installation and paste directions. Intel’s general Xeon TIM instructions and its LGA3647-specific guidance illustrate why the socket matters: the latter applies to LGA3647, not every Skylake Xeon.
When to replace the thermal paste
Intel’s general Xeon guideline is to replace TIM when removing the fan heatsink or processor. The material sits between the IHS and heatsink to aid heat transfer; once those surfaces have been separated, do not reuse the old material or put fresh paste over it. Intel says to remove the old TIM, leave the IHS free of oil, dust, and debris, apply fresh TIM, and install the heatsink.
What thermal paste should you use?
For an individual repair, a general-purpose CPU thermal paste is a practical choice if its application is compatible with your cooler’s instructions. The cited Intel guidance does not rank consumer brands or establish that the highest-conductivity paste will improve a particular Xeon system. Choose a product you can apply correctly and use with the mounting procedure specified for your hardware.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
| Option | What Intel’s guidance establishes | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| General-purpose CPU thermal paste | Intel’s general Xeon instructions describe applying fresh TIM at the center of the IHS; they do not endorse a particular aftermarket brand. | A sensible individual-purchase option when it suits the cooler’s directions. |
| Intel replacement TIM kits E94211-001 and G15816-001 | Intel lists E94211-001 as a syringe and G15816-001 as a pillow pack, and says they can be ordered through Intel Customer Support or retail sites. | Search by the part number if you want Intel’s named replacement kit; confirm current availability with the seller. |
| Honeywell PCM45F | Intel recommends it for Xeon Scalable and same-socket Xeon W processors. Intel’s page reviewed 2025-03-03 reports a 1,000-unit minimum order. | This is not a practical default for a single workstation owner, and Intel’s stated scope should not be broadened to every Xeon Skylake CPU. |
Some boxed Intel Xeon heatsinks already have TIM applied in three bars. If yours does, Intel says not to add more paste. Check the heatsink before applying anything.
How to replace Xeon thermal paste
- Check your hardware instructions. Identify the exact processor, socket, motherboard, and cooler. Follow the cooler or system’s removal and installation directions, especially for socket-specific mounting.
- Remove the heatsink and inspect it. If the heatsink or processor has been removed, treat the old TIM as needing replacement. Do not add fresh TIM on top of used material.
- Clean the old TIM from the IHS. Intel describes using a delicate anti-static wiper and isopropyl alcohol to remove old material. Intel does not specify an alcohol concentration or brand; handle the processor carefully and keep the IHS free of oil, dust, and debris.
- Apply fresh TIM at the center of the IHS. Intel’s general Xeon instructions describe a center application using a syringe or pillow pack. They do not give a universal amount in grams or a pattern that overrides a particular cooler’s directions. If TIM is pre-applied to the heatsink, do not add more.
- Install the heatsink according to its instructions. Use the prescribed mounting procedure and hardware for your exact socket and cooler. Intel’s Xeon Scalable thermal guide explains that TIM fills the gap between IHS and heatsink and that thermal performance depends on conductivity and applied pressure; this is not a reason to alter the specified mounting force.
What changes for LGA3647?
If your Xeon system uses LGA3647, follow Intel’s socket-specific instructions rather than assuming a procedure based on the word “Skylake.” Intel calls TIM replacement critical when reinstalling an LGA3647 processor or heatsink. That advice is specific to the socket guidance and should not be treated as a universal Xeon Skylake mounting specification.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- NEXT-LEVEL THERMAL PERFORMANCE: MX-7 features a performance-optimized, dense, and highly viscous consistency. Its high filler content ensures exceptional heat transfer
- LONG-TERM STABILITY: High cohesion prevents pump-out, dry-out, or bleeding even under repeated thermal cycles, ensuring long-lasting and consistent performance without the need for frequent reapplication
- PERFECT APPLICATION: MX-7 cannot be spread manually by design. Its low adhesion allows the paste to distribute naturally under cooler pressure, forming a thin bond line without trapping air bubbles
- SAFE FOR ALL DEVICES: MX-7 is electrically non-conductive and non-capacitive, making it completely safe for CPUs, GPUs, laptops, consoles, and other, no risk of short circuits or electrical discharge
- EFFORTLESS CLEANING WITH MX CLEANER: Removes old thermal paste thoroughly, preparing contact surfaces for optimal performance. Also available as a convenient bundle with MX-7
