Full spoilers follow for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine, including the identity of the Beast of Beauclair and the expansion’s major endings.
Blood and Wine sends Geralt to Toussaint to investigate a string of murders blamed on the Beast of Beauclair. The case leads to Syanna, the estranged sister of Duchess Anna Henrietta, and to Dettlaff, a higher vampire whose relationship with Syanna sets off a crisis that threatens the duchy. Geralt’s key choice is whether to pursue Syanna or seek the Unseen Elder; later, the ribbon and the sisters’ reconciliation determine who survives.
What happens in Blood and Wine?
Geralt accepts a contract in Toussaint, a duchy whose courtly rituals and indulgent reputation contrast with the killings troubling its capital, Beauclair. CD PROJEKT RED introduced the expansion in 2015 as a “20-hour-plus tale” set in Toussaint. That figure is the publisher’s advertised estimate, not a guaranteed playtime. The studio described the region as untouched by war, where indulgence and knightly ritual mask an ancient secret. CD PROJEKT RED’s expansion announcement and its developer diary introduce the setting and the expansion’s role as Geralt’s final mission.
Geralt and his friend Regis follow the evidence behind the murders. The investigation points toward a blackmailer and the duchess’s missing sister, Syanna, who has been acting under the identity Rhenawedd. Syanna’s revenge plot targets people connected to her exile. The killings are not simply the work of an unknown monster: court history and Syanna’s personal grievance are central to the case.

- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Dettlaff, a higher vampire, believes Syanna has betrayed him. After learning of her role in the events, he threatens Toussaint. Anna Henrietta confines Syanna and orders Geralt to deal with Dettlaff. Their conflict is not a straightforward choice between an innocent person and a monster: Syanna is responsible for a revenge plot, while Dettlaff’s retaliation endangers many others.
Who is the Beast of Beauclair?
The Beast is Dettlaff, but the mystery’s human motive leads to Syanna. She arranged the killings as revenge for her exile, and Dettlaff’s attachment to her helps turn the investigation into a threat to the duchy. The game’s plot is also summarized in this overview of Blood and Wine.
What is the decisive choice during the Night of the Long Fangs?
During “The Night of the Long Fangs,” Geralt must choose a way to reach Dettlaff: pursue Syanna or seek the Unseen Elder, who can compel Dettlaff to grant an audience. The choice changes the route and the available outcomes. The Syanna route can take Geralt to the Land of a Thousand Fables, where a ribbon can protect her during the later confrontation at Tesham Mutna.

Pursue Syanna
This route can lead to the Land of a Thousand Fables. There, Geralt can obtain a ribbon from a little girl. If Geralt has it, the ribbon saves Syanna when Dettlaff attacks at Tesham Mutna. Without it, Dettlaff can kill her before the palace ceremony.
Seek the Unseen Elder
This route bypasses the Land of a Thousand Fables and changes how Geralt reaches the confrontation with Dettlaff. It does not offer the same ribbon outcome. Its consequences should be considered separately from failing to collect the ribbon on the Syanna route; they are different branches, not a single interchangeable choice.
What does the ribbon do?
On the Syanna route, the ribbon obtained in the Land of a Thousand Fables protects her from Dettlaff at Tesham Mutna. If Geralt does not obtain it, she can die in that confrontation. It is a consequential story item, not a cosmetic collectible.

How do you get the Blood and Wine good ending?
There is no objectively correct ending; “good” and “best” are player judgments. To reach the outcome in which both sisters live, pursue Syanna, obtain the ribbon, and make the reconciliation choices before the ceremony. The ending guide describes the broad requirements, but exact dialogue requirements are not established here, so this overview does not give a line-by-line choice list. The ending guide covers the main branches.

Yes. If Syanna survives Dettlaff’s attack and the sisters reconcile before the palace ceremony, both Anna Henrietta and Syanna live. The other major outcomes vary by Syanna’s survival, Anna Henrietta’s survival, Dettlaff’s fate, the route Geralt takes, and whether reconciliation occurs.
| Outcome | Syanna | Anna Henrietta | Dettlaff | How it happens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Both sisters survive | Lives | Lives | Dies | Geralt pursues Syanna, obtains the ribbon, and makes the reconciliation choices before the ceremony. |
| Sisters’ tragedy | Dies at the ceremony | Dies | Dies | Syanna reaches the ceremony but kills Anna Henrietta; Damien then kills Syanna. |
| Syanna dies before trial | Dies | Lives | May survive, depending on route and confrontation | On the Syanna route, failing to obtain the ribbon lets Dettlaff kill her at Tesham Mutna. The Unseen Elder branch has distinct consequences. |
These are the three broad ending outcomes; the branches and side consequences are more nuanced than a single dialogue choice. The story’s central outcome depends on who survives, how Geralt handles Dettlaff, and whether the sisters reconcile.
Can you play Blood and Wine without the base game?
Blood and Wine is a story expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, rather than a standalone game. Bandai Namco’s official site describes the Complete Edition as including the base game and both story expansions, including Blood and Wine: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt official site.
