The vibe-coding trap is building a substantial solution before learning what the problem is called, what already solves it, or why those existing approaches fall short. The model may generate flawed code, but the deeper risk is that fast, cheap implementation can let a team skip the learning that used to happen before—and during—building. That is the argument in Levelbrook Consulting’s September 21, 2026 essay, not a measured claim about every AI coding project.

What is the vibe-coding trap?

It is the risk of treating the ability to generate code as evidence that a problem is ready to be solved. A builder asks an AI agent to make a tool, sees a working implementation take shape, and only later discovers the field’s established terminology, existing software, or techniques that would have changed the design.

The essay’s central point is about the order of work. When implementation took more time, the effort could force builders to learn about a problem along the way. AI-assisted generation can make implementation cheap enough to happen first, removing some of that incidental education. This is the author’s framing of a changed workflow, not a quantified finding that AI always causes teams to overlook prior work.

Why does AI make it easier to reinvent existing software?

Generating a plausible first version reduces the friction between an idea and something that appears to work. That can be useful, but it also makes it easier to commit effort before asking whether the problem already has a name or a mature solution. A polished prototype can create momentum and sunk costs, making a later discovery—that a framework already provides the needed capability, for example—harder to act on.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The essay offers an agent-written rate limiter when a framework implementation may exist, retry logic that omits jitter, and a custom authentication layer as examples of what a team might reinvent or get wrong. These are illustrations from the essay, not evidence that such defects are common or that an AI model is always responsible for them. The practical lesson is to check fit and prior art before code makes one approach feel inevitable.

What should a team check before asking an agent to build something?

Before implementation, write down answers to four questions and have a person read them. Levelbrook Consulting proposes this prior-art pass in its essay:

  1. What do people who study this problem call it? Find the field’s vocabulary so searches and discussions start from the right concepts.
  2. What do they already use? Look for established tools, frameworks, or approaches relevant to the need.
  3. Why does the existing thing not work here? State the actual mismatch with your requirements or constraints, rather than assuming a new implementation is necessary.
  4. What is the smallest version that could be built on top of existing work instead? Consider whether a focused extension or integration would meet the need without recreating the whole solution.

The human read matters because an agent can produce confident answers without deciding whether the assumptions are sound. The pass is intended to happen before implementation, when findings can still alter the plan—not only in a code review after time and effort have accumulated.

How to use the pass without turning it into a ban on new work

Prior-art checking is not a rule to always adopt an existing solution. The essay warns that the exercise can become an excuse not to innovate. If no existing approach fits, a team can still build; it should record what it considered and why those options did not meet the need.

A useful outcome is a decision that can be explained: which existing approach was examined, what requirement or constraint it failed, and why the smallest viable alternative is a new implementation or extension. This makes the choice reviewable and gives future maintainers context that would otherwise be lost.

What the essay does—and does not—establish

The essay names SPARK, Dafny, Lean, and TLA+ while arguing that builders should learn the relevant field. It does not compare these tools, recommend one for a particular project, or establish that they are interchangeable. It also mentions Bend 2 and related Hacker News posts, but those references are not independently verified here, so they are not a basis for technical or quantitative claims.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Likewise, the examples of rate limiting, retry behavior, and authentication illustrate the author’s concern; they do not provide a measured catalogue of AI coding failures. The actionable idea is narrower: before delegating implementation, make sure the team can name the problem, identify existing approaches, explain their mismatch, and justify the smallest thing that still needs building.
