1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo become a programmer, learn to write, test, and maintain code for a specific kind of work, then build practical experience that shows you can do those tasks. A four-year degree is a common U.S. entry route for software developer roles, but it is not a universal hiring rule. First, decide what kind of software work you want; the job title, training path, and career outlook depend on that choice.
What does a programmer do?
Programming work means creating, modifying, testing, and maintaining code. In the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) description, computer programmers write, modify, and test code and scripts that allow software and applications to function properly. Software developers, by contrast, design computer applications or programs. The jobs can overlap in practice, but BLS reports them as separate occupational categories, so their labor-market figures should not be treated as interchangeable.
“Programmer” can also be used informally for people whose official job titles are software developer, web developer, application developer, or another specialty. Before choosing a course or credential, look at the duties in the kinds of job listings you want—not only the title.
Choose the kind of programming work you want to pursue
Your target work should guide what you learn. These are useful broad starting points, not formal BLS categories in every case:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Web: Build websites or web applications. Look for listings that describe the type of site or application and the coding duties involved.
- Applications: Create or maintain software for computers or mobile devices. Developer roles may involve designing the application as well as implementing and testing it.
- Data: Write code to process, analyze, or move data. Check whether the role emphasizes programming, analysis, or another responsibility.
- Systems: Work on software that supports computers or other technology. Read listings carefully to understand the specific environment and duties.
Job ads help translate an interest into a learning plan: note repeated duties, tools, and education requirements in relevant postings, then focus your study on the work they describe. The labels alone do not guarantee that two positions have the same responsibilities.
Do you need a degree to become a programmer?
Not in every case. For software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers, BLS lists a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field as the typical entry-level education in the United States; it also notes that some employers prefer a master’s degree. “Typical” describes a common expectation, not a legal requirement or a rule every employer follows. Requirements vary by employer and position, so check the qualifications for the roles you are targeting.

A degree is one possible route to structured study. If you are considering a course, bootcamp, or self-directed learning instead, compare it against the work you want to do rather than assuming any one route guarantees employment. Useful comparison points include curriculum coverage, hands-on practice, total time and cost, geographic relevance, and independently verifiable employment outcomes. The available national occupational figures do not establish that a particular training provider or program produces better job outcomes.
Build a focused learning plan
There is no single language-first curriculum established for every beginner. A practical plan starts with the intended work and uses that target to decide what to study. Treat the following as a sequence for organizing your learning, not a promise of a job or a fixed timetable.

- Choose a target role or project type. Use current job listings or a concrete project idea to identify the duties and prerequisites you want to prepare for.
- Study the fundamentals needed for that target. Work through programming concepts and the tools the relevant roles commonly describe. Avoid trying to learn every language or specialty at once.
- Practice by building and testing. Make small projects that exercise the work you intend to do. Run them, find and fix errors, and make changes; programming involves testing and modifying code as well as writing it.
- Keep evidence of what you can do. Save clear project descriptions and examples of your work. Explain the problem, your approach, and how you checked that the result worked.
- Compare your preparation with job requirements. Revisit listings for your target roles, identify gaps, and adjust your study or project work. A completed course or portfolio is evidence of learning, not a guarantee of hiring.
Should you buy a programming book?
A beginner textbook can be a useful optional resource if you prefer a structured reference or printed exercises. No particular title or language is established as necessary here. Check that any book matches your chosen subject and learning level; buying one is not a prerequisite to programming.

BLS figures provide national context, not an individual prediction. The outlook differs between the broader software developer, quality assurance analyst, and tester group and the narrower computer programmer category.

| BLS occupation or group | Published measure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers | 10% projected employment growth, 2025–35; about 106,100 openings per year on average, 2025–35; $135,980 median annual wage for software developers in May 2025 | The openings estimate includes replacement needs as well as employment growth. The wage is the U.S. median for software developers, not a starting salary or a promise for an individual. |
| Computer programmers | 6% projected employment decline, 2025–35 | This projection applies to the computer programmer category, not to the developer and QA/tester group. |
BLS published these measures on Occupational Outlook Handbook pages updated August 27, 2026. The wage is a U.S. occupational median; actual pay varies, and a national figure does not tell you what a particular employer, location, or entry-level role will pay. The different projections reflect different occupational definitions, so do not use one category’s outlook as a stand-in for the other.

How to evaluate your next step
- Start with the duties: Decide whether the work you want is closer to designing software, writing and testing code, or another specialty.
- Check local requirements: Use job listings in your country and region to understand education, experience, and tool expectations. The outlook and wage figures above are U.S.-specific.
- Choose training for fit: Compare what a program teaches, how much practice it provides, and its full cost and duration. Seek independently verifiable outcome data rather than relying on a job guarantee.
- Measure progress by demonstrated ability: Can you explain, test, and improve a project that reflects your intended work? If not, identify the missing skill and practice it before broadening your plan.
