Docker packages applications and their dependencies into images, then runs those images as containers. For a first local setup, install Docker Desktop on Mac, Windows, or Linux, or install Docker Engine using your Linux distribution’s instructions. Verify the installation with docker run hello-world, then learn the essentials by running a container, building an image with a Dockerfile, and defining a small application stack with Compose.

What Docker is—and what it is not

Docker is a client-server system for building and running containerized applications. The Docker Engine daemon, dockerd, manages images, containers, networks, and volumes. The Docker CLI sends commands to the daemon through its API. An image is the packaged template; a container is an instance created from that image. A registry stores images, and Docker Hub is the public registry used by default in Docker’s documented workflow. Docker’s overview of its architecture and core objects explains how these pieces fit together.

A container provides a loosely isolated environment with what an application needs to run. It is not, by itself, a guarantee that the application is secure: images come from registries, published ports make services reachable, and mounted host files may be accessible inside a container.

Choose and install a local Docker setup

For many beginners, Docker Desktop is the most direct route: it provides a graphical interface and bundles Docker Engine, the CLI, and Compose. Linux users who prefer to manage the daemon and command-line tools themselves can install Docker Engine using instructions for their distribution. Docker calls Desktop the easiest and recommended way to get Compose. Check Docker’s current Compose installation overview for the available installation options.

Setup Best fit Compose and practical notes
Docker Desktop Mac, Windows, or Linux users who want a GUI and bundled tools Compose is included. Requirements and supported configurations vary by operating system; check the relevant current installation page.
Docker Engine Linux users comfortable administering a distribution-specific daemon and CLI Install Compose as a CLI plugin if needed. Docker’s standalone Compose installation is legacy.

On Linux, Docker Desktop runs an Engine in a VM and uses a separate desktop-linux context. Containers and images from an existing Linux Engine are not automatically shared with that Desktop VM. Running both setups at once can also create conflicts, such as both attempting to reserve the same port. If you choose Desktop on Linux, understand which Docker context your CLI is using.

Windows requirements to check

Docker’s current Windows installation page lists 8 GB of RAM and hardware virtualization among its requirements, and says WSL 2 is the default backend for most users. Windows Home and Education support Linux containers only, according to that page. Requirements depend on platform and mode and can change, so use Docker’s current Windows installation instructions to check your machine before installing.

Verify Docker with a test container

Open a terminal (or PowerShell on Windows) and run:

docker run hello-world

Docker downloads the hello-world image if it is not already available, creates and runs a container from it, prints a confirmation message, and exits. This verifies that the CLI can communicate with the Engine and run a container. Docker’s getting-started guide provides guided beginner exercises.

Run and inspect your first useful container

Try a small web server using the official NGINX image:

docker run -d --name web -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 nginx

This asks Docker to run the nginx image in the background (-d), name the container web, and forward host port 8080 to port 80 in the container. Binding the host side to 127.0.0.1 makes the service available through the local machine’s loopback interface rather than all host interfaces. Open http://localhost:8080 in a browser to see the server’s default page.

List running containers with:

docker ps

The output includes the container name, status, image, and port mapping. In -p host:container, the left port is on your computer and the right port is inside the container. To stop and remove this example when you are done:

docker stop web
docker rm web

Build an image with a Dockerfile

A Dockerfile describes how to build an image: the base image, files to copy, dependencies to install, and command to run. A Compose file instead declares the services and settings for an application stack. Docker’s concise distinction is: “A Dockerfile provides instructions to build a container image while a Compose file defines your running containers.” See Docker’s explanation of Compose and its relationship to Dockerfiles.

Here is a minimal example that packages a static page into an NGINX image. In an empty project directory, create index.html:

<h1>Hello from my Docker image</h1>

Then create a file named Dockerfile in the same directory:

FROM nginx:alpine
COPY index.html /usr/share/nginx/html/index.html
  • FROM selects the base image containing NGINX.
  • COPY places the project’s HTML file at the location NGINX serves by default.

Build and run the image:

docker build -t my-page .
docker run -d --name my-page -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 my-page

The final dot in docker build sets the current directory as the build context—the files Docker can use during the build. Visit http://localhost:8080. If the port is already in use, choose another host port, such as 8081, while keeping the container port at 80. Docker’s image-building documentation covers the build process and further practices.

Use Compose for a small multi-service project

Compose lets you describe an application’s services, ports, volumes, and networks in one YAML file, then manage that stack with the Docker CLI. To see how a web app can communicate with a database, create compose.yaml:

Start the services from the directory containing the file:

docker compose up -d

Compose creates the services and the named database volume, and publishes the web service on local port 8080. The example demonstrates the stack mechanics; the NGINX service does not itself connect to PostgreSQL. An application configured to use the database would connect to host db, the Compose service name, and PostgreSQL’s default container port 5432. Containers on the Compose network can discover each other by service name, so avoid hard-coding container IP addresses. Run docker compose down to stop and remove the stack’s containers and network; the named volume remains unless you explicitly remove it with docker compose down -v.

Keep data beyond a container’s lifetime

Files written only to a container’s writable layer are tied to that container. Removing the container removes that layer, so important data should live elsewhere. Docker volumes persist independently of containers; bind mounts expose a chosen host path inside a container. Docker’s storage documentation describes these options.

  • Use a named volume for service-managed persistent data, such as a database directory. In the Compose example, db-data keeps PostgreSQL’s data when the database container is replaced.
  • Use a bind mount when a container needs to read or edit files in your project directory—for example, source code during development. Select the host path deliberately because the container gains access to mounted files.

Publish ports without exposing more than needed

Publishing a port connects a host port to a port inside the container. Docker Desktop documents that publishing without an explicit host address listens on all interfaces by default. For a development service intended only for the local machine, use an explicit loopback binding such as -p 127.0.0.1:8080:80 or the equivalent in Compose. Read Docker’s port-publishing documentation for behavior and options.

A host port already used by another process or container cannot be claimed, so Docker reports a bind or port-allocation error. Change the host-side port (the left number in -p host:container), or stop the process using it. Binding to localhost limits access via the host’s loopback address; it does not replace sound application security or careful handling of secrets and mounts.

Diagnose common beginner problems

  • The command cannot reach Docker: confirm Docker Desktop or the Engine is running, then check the active Docker context if multiple Engines are installed.
  • The container starts and exits: inspect its logs with docker logs web, substituting your container name. A container exits when its main process ends; that can be normal for a one-shot task.
  • The browser cannot reach the service: use docker ps to check that it is running and that the expected port mapping appears. Confirm the host port and URL, and check whether the host port is already occupied.
  • Files or database records disappeared: check whether the data was stored only in the container layer or whether the expected volume or bind mount was actually attached.
  • One Compose service cannot find another: use the other service’s Compose name as the hostname, not an IP address or localhost. Within a container, localhost refers to that same container.

Use trusted images and check Docker’s terms

Choose images from sources you trust, keep Docker Desktop updated, and publish only the ports needed for your task. A container can access files mounted into it, so avoid mounting sensitive host directories casually.

Licensing depends on product and use. Docker’s Engine documentation says commercial use of Docker Engine obtained through Docker Desktop in larger enterprises requires a paid subscription when the organization exceeds 250 employees or annual revenue over US$10 million. The Docker download page states the thresholds as “more than” those same figures. This is a product- and use-specific term, not a general claim about every Docker Engine installation; check Docker’s current Desktop subscription terms and Docker’s current plans and pricing for your circumstances.

Keep learning with hands-on practice

After the first container, practice changing a file, rebuilding an image, and then adding a service to Compose. Docker provides guided getting-started material and learning resources, including books by Docker Captains. A book can suit readers who prefer a linear reference; check that any edition or course uses current Docker commands and Compose conventions.
